Orian only learned to sing in harmony in her twenties, so it's never too late. possibly a silly question: when I hear a guy and a girl singing in harmony it is always much more easier for me to "ear" the girl rather than the notes the guy is singing, that for me remains a nice mysterious background I'm totally unable to reproduce. Is it somehow..."normal" or my brain is really deranged? ;)

    • @oandoduo
      @oandoduo  6 лет назад +64

      E. Piovani, that is very normal! The girl's part is usually higher and so it stands out more and it is easier for our ear to hear the top notes. It takes practice to be able to pick out the lower 'guy's part. Try breaking it down to each note: sing the girls part and then drop the pitch until you settle onto the guy's note. In our tutorial for Fleetwood Mac's 'I Don't Want To Know', we demonstrate two parts separately first and then put them together, try practicing along with the video! ruclips.net/video/DmmrRLH0m5A/видео.html

    • @mattcloud0414
      @mattcloud0414 6 лет назад +9

      E. Piovani just keep practicing the part you want to take, and, if possible, do it with a slow tempo at first. I also think practicing with a partner who can sing can help a lot too.

    Something that has helped me immensely in trying to sing harmonies is to follow some advice I read or heard that suggested thinking of a harmony part as an alternative melody.
    In other words, instead of thinking of building harmonies by trying to shadow or think of a harmony for each individual note of the melody, think more broadly, about an alternative 'tune' to the main melody.

When you sing a third above a changing melody, you actually often switch between major and minor thirds (and sometimes fourths) to better suit the accompanying chords. In our example, 'Bye Bye Love' by The Everly Brothers, it starts as a Major Third (E above C) and then changes to a Minor Third (D above B).

    Not going to lie, I wish I had instructors like you two growing up. Now that I'm an adult and when I look back on it, I didn't have great chorus teachers in elementary, middle, and high school. Sure, they taught the standard music basics and vocal exercises. However, they just did the bare minimum of what was being asked of them. One of those above and beyond things that just isn't really taught, is how to find your own voice and to feel comfortable and confident in your sound. And then to practice learning and building comfortableness in your own unique sound. Everyone typically has a singing style that they're just naturally better at and more suited for. I just really wish someone would have reinforced that it's okay to sound different from others. That as a singer, you will need to be able to match notes with others, and at other times, be able to diverge and sing notes that others are not. In fact, it's a beginning principle for many more advanced techniques that you'll learn later on. However, still to this day, I hate my voice if I'm singing solo. I don't mind it if I'm singing along with someone or in a group. But as soon as the music stops, I immediately stop. It made it difficult for me to trust in my voice and to harmonize with others. As such, I instinctively find and simply match the notes of others.

    Thanks for this Beginner's tip to harmonization, I always practice harmony at home without any tutorials, and I kinda gets the tone as I practice it, but this tip helps me to know the harmony of a certain song in the easiest way, good video btw

    Hi Guys, loved the video, thank you. I'm just a normal guy with limited singing ability. I've always been fascinated with singing styles and definitely going to practice this. I now better understand harmony from a musical notes point of view. My question is, how do I translate this to the vocal side. Using my actual vocal chords, throat, chest and whatever else is involved to bring out the harmony? Please forgive me if this is a silly question. I seriously want to learn. Would greatly appreciate your feedback.

      Hi Julian, thanks for your comment! There’s not really anyway to improve at singing except to practice over and over. It really helps to record yourself and listen back because the way you sound in your head is not always how it sounds to other people. Play the notes on an instrument and then sing them back. Also, once you get the sound of the third above harmony in your head, try harmonising along to any recording with a simple melody. Happy singing!

    I know you two were explaining the third, and it sounded good... But I liked the fifth more to be honest! Triumphant and shining, it sounded fantastic! Do you happen to know any examples of the fifth harmony being sung in music?

    • @oandoduo
      @oandoduo  3 года назад +3

      You will very rarely hear only fifths, but sometimes you'll hear them in passing. It is a very open, neutral sound because it it the 3rds and 7ths that give chords their flavor! 'Power chords' on the guitar are made up of just the root and fifth notes.

    If you don't have anyone to pratice or a piano, you can try this: Pick up a song that you know very well, listen with your earphones and focus on the Chorus, wich is the part when most of the harmonys happens. Then you try to sing the other voice, the third or the second, not the principal voice. Extra tip: duets with couples are the best to do it, because it's easier to learn when is female and male voice, so your ear can separate the voices better. Or you can choose a music group with many voices, as Little Mix, One Direction or BTS, where the voices of the singers are very different from each other.

    I don't know if I'm different but because I know the melody line I don't listen to it but I make sure that the harmony part I'm singing makes sense to itself.
