Do you see the erase head? It's skewed compared to the record and play head assembly.
I have two TC-k770ES decks one with skewed erase head one which is aligned for what I remember.
After having serviced (disassembled except the rotary parts) one of these decks and aligned the erase head the mechanism doesn't want to raise into the cassette! It goes perfectly smooth on its own (at power on, test mode) and everything seems fine, but the moment you insert a cassette it just seems to get stuck.
No time to further check until I'm done for the season. I am wondering why these decks have skewed erase heads and if it's the problem I tried to correct to cause the jamming.

I have seen erase tapes skewed in multiple Sony decks. However, your issue is not connected with the head alignment unless you significantly screwed the heads. sometimes it happens and I have to reassemble tape transport. I think something is wrong with the large white moving plastic piece at the bottom of the transport. Just check everything works moving gears by hand before assembling motors.

@@hifirulezzz thanks for your input. It wasn't easy to evaluate once everything was back together.

@@m80116 Ok, I have to reinstall erase head in KA3, see my series from yesterday. There is a spring below that head and 3 adjustment screws. Maybe it got skewed due to vibration during shipping.

@@hifirulezzz super precious advice. Thank you for remembering me. I'll let you know if it was that.

Just to let everybody know that I had misplaced the ornamental plate in the lower part, pretty trivial mistake and I should have stopped earlier fixing myself instead of the deck as I recall being very tired at the end.
I went on and aligned (again?) the erase head to the tape using a modified (chipped) cassette as suggested by the SONY Service Manual.
The deck developed almost immediately another problem and it was due to a missing washer. I don't know if it was my fault or not but after having re-created one and installed it now works beautifully.
So chuffed about this deck... it sounds amazing.
