Hi Heath, good video of the differences between the vertical splitters and the Horizontal splitters. One thing I would add is that if you have the extended tray for the Eastonmade for the large rounds it makes it somewhat easier as most of the time the pieces from the first split fall onto the extended tray, but not always. I also could keep those pieces there until I was ready for them. I didn’t even know about the extended tray as an option until I went to Woodsman days. BTW, the hat arrived today and you can I’ll see it on upcoming videos. Thanks again
I LOVE my extended tray on my 22/28, and also love the Dual Log Lift I have on it. Although Dual Log lift is useless when running boxwedge, but it does help when my tall 4 way is used. :) ruclips.net/video/UmH2ImBb0EY/видео.html
Great video Heath! You hit all the pros and cons to both types of splitters! Just like you said, it really comes down to what type of output you want and what type of splits you’re looking for 👌🏻 Now you better get that kitchen finished 😂
Great comparison Heath! I would have loved to get the axis but the height was a problem to be able to park it inside. That's why I bought the 12-22. - Tim
Good comparison. I just split a bunch of about 36” Beech rounds on the Axis yesterday. I did have them cut in 1/2 with a chainsaw so I had a chance of moving them with just one person. Sliding verses catching seems way safer.
Thanks Heath! You commented to me recently that you planned to do this video. The video confirmed what I was thinking and plan to buy. I will only criticize one thing in your video and that is that you walked around the horizontal splitter w/o mentioning that a pile of wood or a conveyor may be in the way when going around it in that direction. So, it would be interesting to see if you timed yourself doing a face cord using both machines. Please do bundle size or smaller wood.
As far as I'm concerned, the best "machine" to have in the woodyard is the Wood Bunny!🐰 But beyond that, I'll take the Axis. Great job with the comparison Hubie - you made some great points!👍

Thank you! Both styles have their place and everyone’s situation is different. Honestly if I had to choose just one I’m not sure which I’d go with. Luckily we’ve been blessed to have both.
Shots fired! Seriously though, I think the Horizontals are a slightly safer option - not that the verticals aren't safe (right Allen Family Firewood), but I just don't trust myself to have my hands as close to the blade as they require. I prefer to just sent it and stand back. One other thing to note - some of the smaller frame splitters allow you to work from the side loading the log lift. This makes it a great option for splitting alone.
Yes they do, I’d say most still operate from the opposite side though. I’d say the horizontal may be slightly safer but when run correctly they’re both reasonably safe.
We did a few over 300lbs a few videos ago on our Axis. It’s definitely easier to slide them than to handle them on a non box wedge horizontal machine. If you look back in our videos we’ve tried them on all of our splitters.
I noticed that when you run the vertical splitter that the logs are sometimes hard to get off the log lift, but if you don't raise it all the way the log will be above the table and slide right over.
I have a home made 36" stroke splitter. I put a round steel toboggan under the hitch on mine and when the splits pile up too high it just pushes the splitter forward along the row on rounds. I bet it would work on the 12/22 also.

See Allen Family Firewood challenge using Buster the vertical. It's pretty fast. You're right though pretty tough to beat a machine that does multiple splits per stroke.
You definitely won’t out produce a horizontal machine especially with an elevator. But if working alone with no elevator you’ll be a lot closer in production time from round to being split and stacked into a tote. I see that you’ve already watched Phil run the challenge. Mike from KNL Firewood ran it with his Axis as well.
The Axis is the best in my opinion to replace the box store.. with the Axis you can quadruple your production and make the bank to purchase a small Processor... then off to the big leagues.. the Axis is the most versatile machine from boiler, to stove, to high value smoker and recreational burning, to kindling.. no other can do so much...
I wonder if you could get one built flipped. I know some manufacturers will somewhat customize a unit for you. Daniel Atkins had his horizontal Wolf Ridge built opposite of how they’re usually built.
Jay, I’m an expert talker lol. I think I only stopped twice during this. We were on a time crunch as the guy who was buying the 12-22 showed up with in 5 minutes of our wrap up.

What awesome timing! I've been on phone with Gerry at Eastonmade, and with Wolfridge both today, just before you posted this awesome video. I have the Eastonmade 22/28 with Dual Log Lifts, 36" extended tray, 5 way Boxwedge, and tall 4 way. This is to much of a splitter for one person. "Merry Go Round" as you mentioned is 100% truth. You need 2 or more people, as the Eastonmade is a BEAST, an Awesome machine. My 22/28 is now for sale as of yesterday, as I'm going with Vertical- from either Wolfridge or Eastonmade. My Horizontal makes to much waste for me to let split wood flow directly into IBC totes. A vertical will mostly eliminate this. So again, GREAT video, great timing, as my 22/28 is gonna be leaving soon as well, for a new unit. I love your very informative videos! ruclips.net/video/UmH2ImBb0EY/видео.html
I’ve been a huge fan of Easton made, but I have to tell you that Wolfridge’s new VS 17. I honestly believe is a better machine with the improvements that they have made the ignition is electric start which is located at the front. The throttle control is located at the front. The log lift goes up completely vertical, and if you decide to get it with the conveyor, it is hydraulically operated as well as the log lift. No need for belts or hand cranking.
@@WoodysRTBFirewood Yep, put down an early deposit today. Now I gotta sell this extremely large overkill BEAST of a machine that I have :),, Eastonmade 22/28
Thanks Jerry, the splitter you have is a beast and definitely can keep a few people busy! Working alone though I think you’ll be really happy with a vertical machine. I’m sure you’ll sell the 22/28 in no time, they don’t hit the used market too often.
Both is definitely the best option if you can swing it! My method is to surprise her with the new splitters! You start by getting pseudo permission, say I’m going to look at this splitter. If she says okay that’s basically permission because why look at it if you aren’t going to buy it if it checks out. Then hit her with the surprise new splitter when it arrives. “No guarantees on the effectiveness of this plan lol”
Their are plenty of vertical and horizontal splitters made right here in the USA. Guessing you didn’t watch the video, it’s not about make or model but style of splitter.

I agree, it is a very versatile machine and money maker for a lot of people.
Great video. Like they say different strokes for different folks lol.
For sure! Thank you.
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors they are both great machines
@@mountaintopoutdoors yes they are.
I like the vertical but they all off load to the left I have always off loaded to the right . But that’s just me very nice units .
I wonder if you could get one built flipped. I know some manufacturers will somewhat customize a unit for you. Daniel Atkins had his horizontal Wolf Ridge built opposite of how they’re usually built.
I would have sold the all wood and keep the 12-22 box wedge says it all.
I may end up with a box wedge machine one day but I’d want one with a pull back arm. My 12-22 was an early model.
Great video. How many takes did this take?? Enquiring minds want to know. That was a lot of talking in a short amount of time.
Jay, I’m an expert talker lol. I think I only stopped twice during this. We were on a time crunch as the guy who was buying the 12-22 showed up with in 5 minutes of our wrap up.
Comes down to quality over quantity for me. That's why I chose the axis. Sell half as much make 2x the money cuz the quality.
Definitely able to produce higher quality with the verticals imo. Quality over Quantity is a great description.
When I had my builtrite splitter I would let it pile up in front of splitter and the splitter would move backwards
I used to do that with my old splitter as well.
That’s awesome 😊
Thanks!
“A recipe for loosing fingers…”. 😂😂😂.
For sure!
I split by myself, so auto cycle is splitting while i grab next round. Can't do that on vertical.
True, I hadn’t thought about autocycle.
“Hopefully” I say that a lot too 😂
Right! Hopefully it stops raining soon.
Buy both! LOL 😊 Shalom/gw
For sure! Thanks.
You better get that kitchen done then you can go onto the next big project
That’s the goal! Less fun but definitely needs to happen.
Easy,
For more than 130 cords per year, the horizontal,
For less than 140 cords per year the axis.
To some extent, space, man power, other equipment, and product offerings come in to play as well though.
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors also depends on what other equipment you have. The vertical with a 3 way wedge and a rounds table like mine would be pretty fast.
Poor Rachel didn’t get her kitchen yet , keep watching in the 2024 for the NEW KITCHEN. Heath you got to stop 🛑 talking and start put out more firewood 🪵 and bundles. Us U tube are watching for a new KITCHEN 😊.
I know Leonard, I failed but I won’t let it happen again. The 12-22 is sold and we’re making some progress on kitchen plans.
I like the vertical splitter. They are just so expensive
They are expensive but you don’t see them available on the used market very often which shows most people seem to be happy with them.
Directional mic?
It flipped on me a time or 2.
I'm building a platform for my tractor to split from
You’ll love it.

Both are nice splitters, the WR does have some nice features for sure.
👍👍
Thanks!
I'm so informed now that I think having both is the only option. Now we need a video on how you talk your wife into it.
The best marriage advice out there is:
"It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission"😂
@@mattnicol8882 for sure.
Horizontal then you can come help me out. My splitter is down and I am trying not to lose my farm. Joe The Grower in NY
It’s definitely a great option. Have you checked for any rentals in your area. I don’t get to NY much.
How bout hydraulic vs kinetic. Horizontal.
The only kinetic I’ve run was anPower King and it was not worth the steel it was built out of. I’d love to run a super split one day but haven’t yet.
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors good info, thanks, keep up the great videos!
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors what do you know about a DK2 40 ton Kinetic?
Save your back with a vertical machine. You don't get a do-over with your back.
For sure! You only get 1.
Anybody worried about a mess should stay away from firewood!!
True, it is messy for sure.
Neither. Keep your money in the USA.
Their are plenty of vertical and horizontal splitters made right here in the USA. Guessing you didn’t watch the video, it’s not about make or model but style of splitter.
Heath there take off because off PHIL in Allen family firewood 🪵. There get to see OLD BUSTER fill a 2 1/2 cords into PHIL NN trailer in the fastest time on U tube . Hey at why Rachel got one from EASTONMADE because she the fastest lady on U tube for splitting firewood in the wood 🪵 yard . 😊
Phil definitely cranks the wood through Ol Buster!
