  • I lost weight to fit into Brandy Melville… and in this video I will be exposing the marketing secrets they use with their one size fits all policy.
In fact, the secrets I’m showing you are the main reason they manage to still be one of the most popular retailers for teenagers and young girls in 2019.
First, I will be discussing their one size fits all (or "one size fits small") sizing policy. It’s not. It’s an idealistic psychology they want you to “FIT” into.
Next, I will be explaining the MAIN hidden marketing technique Brandy Melville uses to sell & retain their audience.
Lastly I will be outlining their unattainable image and how the “one size fits all policy” isn't a new one. This “ideal” body image isn't original to just Brandy Melville and in fact has been around since the company began!
In the end you’ll understand that the problem people have with Brandy Melville isn't just a sizing issue… and has more strategy to it than you may think…

Never heard of it till yet, I count myself lucky that I'm not a girl anymore, their size politic and deception could actually harm naively girls perception about their bodies and how they're suppose to look like. Nothing wrong with small sizes but if young THIN girls are their target, then they should also explicitly market it that way

While I think you are correct in a way, in some cases I don’t think this comparison is that accurate. I would like to own some specific designer bags not because of the “status” but because they are beautifully designed pieces of art carefully crafted by the hands of artisans in an atelier. What I’m trying to say is that at least the designer bag (if it’s not a basic af shape with logos all over) has some artistic value, whereas there’s nothing special about BM, imo

its nice to wear clothes u find cute on other people, that's the point of what she's saying. If I see like Emma Chamberlain wearing a cute brandy skirt and I want that skirt, I go to get it and its only in an XS/S. I understand like there's plus sized stores, why can't girls have a small girls only store. The plus size stores are aimed for women in their late 20s to early 50s, brandy is aimed for teens and early 20s. Its ultimately not fair to M-XL girls which could open their business a lot and bring them a lot more money in the long run, yet they don't.

Probably the exclusivity, like “all the popular girls are wearing brandy”, makes it more coveted? Like abercrombie & fitch did before them, the CEO Mike Jeffries said in 2007 “A lot of people don’t belong [in our clothes], and they can’t belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely,” and “In every school there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-so-cool kids…we go after the cool kids.” they got dragged for that, though

l o v e m e it costs more for a brand to have a full range of sizes and it’s riskier. More stuff would have to be marked down at the end of the season because it wouldn’t sell. Then their prices would have to go up or they’d have to lower quality. As much hate as they get for making clothes that are SO small, it’s really a pretty smart business move. If all their clothes were medium/large they would be getting a lot more credit for it but they chose to market towards xs/small so they’re getting hate for “promoting an unhealthy body image” or whatever.

i think that brandy should either category themselves as a petite store or be more size inclusive. i like brandy because their clothes are very fashionable and are always up to date with the current "trends". As a size 0 person it is extremely hard to find clothes that fit me really nicely but brandy seem to have a lot of stuff that does actually fit! obviously not all does but i don't believe people should let it get under their skin :")

I agree but petite is the wrong name as brand usually use that to describe being short, or change that section to a more accurate descriptor. When I used to be skinny, I found it incredibly difficult to find clothes, I only shopped in Topshop & Miss Selfridge as they were the only shops in my city which fit. Over the past few years shops have increased their sizing to accommodate the fatter population, for example H&M made a 10 an 8, a 12 a 10 etc, that makes finding clothes for slim & skinny people increasingly difficult.
Being tall, lanky & slim makes finding clothes to fit a huge task, I think most people are oblivious to the lack of clothing options that deviate from the norm. If throughout my life I felt like a personal failure every time I tried on an item of clothing that didn't fit, my self esteem would be in my boots! I do find it hypocritical that so many people are discussing Brandy but not any plus size shops which similarly cater to only a niche size & push cerition aesthetics.
As this brand is so successful then there are obviously enough slim people who fit & like the clothes. I am glad you have a shop that offers you clothes in styles you like & that fit. Not choosing models who are black of asian is odd, there are skinny people in all races but apart from that I do not see why this one shop has offended so many people. With fast fashion & this materialistic day & age, it's not like there aren't a million other shops out there to choose from!

Not every store provides clothes for everyone!

I wouldn't have a problem with it if it was marketed as a petite shop, and had multiple petit sizes to fit those women, like plus size stores do. The problem is that they have one size, and a size that is usually in regular stores as well, as it usually is about a size 2. Size 0 or double 00 girls, short petite girls, and size 4 girls will not fit properly in many of their clothes... It is not a store catering towards petite women, but towards girls that are about a size 2, and are about 1.70 m.

Also if you go on their website they’ll offer some close in a small and medium. I bought on of their medium pant and could barely get it over my thighs (mind you I’m a small at forever 21 generally) it’s a joke.

I don't have a problem with the fact that they make clothes for petite people like how Torrid makes clothes for plus size people. The difference between the two stores is that Torrid advertises that they make clothes for plus size people only while Brandy advertises that "one-size fits all" which is clearly not true. I feel like there will be a lot less hate against them if they changed how they marketed clothing and advertised that their clothing is for petite people rather than saying that their clothing is universal when it is not.

I'm definitely not fat and I honestly thought I was quite skinny but now I'm thinking otherwise and I reallyyyy don't think the girls working there would even fit in them!! It took my mum telling me that they should make the waistline stretchy to realise how ridiculous their whole brand is and I was very surprised and shocked because I look my body tbh and I don't think my thighs could get skinnier because that's just how my body is. Anyway sorry went a bit off there but you're all gorgeous and I wish there were brands with brandy Melville's style and we can boycott them ❤️

girl it is down to them that it doesn’t fit you! don’t let it affect you! i’m 15, i used to shop there and most of the clothes fit me but i remember a specific skirt didn’t and it made me insecure for weeks. please just remember that it isn’t you that’s the problem, and just because your body isn’t insanely tiny like their skirts are, doesn’t mean you’re not beautiful!

I'm 17 years old and considerably on the smaller side and struggle fitting in Brandy's clothes sometimes. I'm like a size 0 in pants, 2 in dresses and generally wear and XS in anything not numbered. Theoretically I should be able to fit in to their clothes, but although I'm small I have an hourglass figure. I feel like their clothes are really made to fit a very specific and extremely unobtainable body type. I've noticed most of their models have a very boyish figure (flat-chested, straight up and down body). I'm a 32D, my boobs aren't very big at all but every top I've bought from Brandy makes my boobs look massive and the top significantly more revealing than its intended to be. It makes me so frustrated because they sell clothes that fit into my exact style, but I can't wear them without looking hyper-sexualized.

Just someone helping.Usually I just beat myself up telling myself I’m fat and worthless and people compliment me like “you’ve gotten so skinny!” And if I go back I’m scared they’ll just think I’m fat.

I'm a size XS and S gal. I love Brandy not because the clothes are cute but because it is one of the very few brands that cater to my size. It's very hard for me to find my size in other clothing store because they have very few pieces in small sizes. Brandy is a petite clothing store and everybody knows that then why do they get upset when their clothes don't fit them, what else do you expect????? There are many brands which exclusively sell plus size clothing but people don't get mad at them for being 'exclusive' In fact almost every brand has a niche audience. The goal of the business is to make money and not be 'diversive' That being said I have no problem if Brandy decides to expand their sizes and I'm sorry that sometimes people don't fit in those clothes and feel ashamed of themselves. You're perfect the way you are but I don't think Brandy will change anytime soon. This marketing strategy is sure making them more popular and people will continue to shop there because they want to fit in that 'exclusivity' Brandy is trying to promote.

i feel like brandys aesthetic of like kind of natural set up stores and photos and then their exclusivity of who can wear their clothes is a strategy to make them seem more sustainable and high quality and not like any other brands but they produce a lot of clothing similar to other fast fashion brands that are being shamed for it, kind of a smart business strategy even though its crappy, but they psychologically make you think youre helping and special and stuff because you can buy and wear brandy rather than forever 21 or h&m

Not once in my life did I feel unhappy in my body until I started being interested and started shopping at Brandy Melville (I don’t anymore) I had never looked at my body and thought I was fat or thought I looked disgusting. And then I started shopping at Brandy Melville I became very self conscious of my body. I didn’t go out a lot because I thought my body looked bad. I’m pretty sure this is how some eating disorders can start thankfully I realised how lucky I was to have a healthy body. And all the wonderful things my body does for me. So if you ever start shopping at Brandy Melville for one don’t and for two your body is perfect and there’s nothing wrong with it 💕

Just found your channel and completely agree. I hate to say it but the thing that draws me into buying more brandy honestly is the quality. Because as a college student I just can’t afford to buy clothes every month, so I rather go for brandy which is inexpensive for the quality they provide. But again, i am in college. I am an adult (I guess???)and I can’t fit into their bottoms unless they are adjustable. I’m pretty slim compared to other girls my age and it sucks that it’s my size where they draw the line (which is ridiculous)

As a mother with a tall, slim, preteen it is so hard to find clothes that fit her. If we had one of those stores here I would go and find something for her, but I probably wouldn't have her go in. I don't mind that they market to slim people, but it would be cool if they had mediums as well, they don't have to have plus sizes though. It doesn't hurt my self esteem at all, I know I'm not tiny. There are many beautiful bodies that are not size zero.

the thing is it's not that brandy clothes are marketing to tiny people because they are, but if you look at all of their clothes the ideal "brandy melville girl" is *tall* and skinny, with just enough but not too much curves, doesn't need to wear a bra, etc. it's so specific that the brand manages to make skinny girls feel bad too because they're not tall or curvy enough to fit in a lot of the bottoms.

@@kimberlyk1021 mostly because it was extremely hard for plus sized people to find clothes that fit them in normal stores, so they created plus sized stores. If you're a small almost everytime you'll find clothes your size, it may be a bit harder if you're xs. Another difference is the fact that xs/s sizes in women have been accepted and looked up to by society and the media, whilst plus sizes and even large sizes or medium sizes on the bigger side of the scale have been deemed as "undesirable and ugly" So having a store that caters to bigger bodies feels more like acceptance than excluding a certain group
Sorry for the big paragraph, I wanted to make sure nothing was badly worded :)

someone please reed this, this is really important --->
the place you work and being skinny dose not mean you need to judge people about being mean or nice, ik that this all started with brandy melville being one size, but now because of that being skinny is apparently means that you are mean becuase you fit into brandy melville!? people have there own experiences on how they want there body to look, and there are some people that happen to get there body skinny with hard work and those people are brandy melville models. so why are people judging them becuase they just happen to be skinny and pretty? idk you tell me...
    my work here is done

I mean I wouldn't say they make their clothes in a high quality manner but agree with everything u say! Buying into trends rather than buying things such as basics, and things that you're actually going to get use out of, is the biggest issue facing our generation right now in terms of fashion! Fashion is amazing and so fun to express yourself with, but I think we all need to be really careful when we're buying things that are "trendy". Think about the last thing u bought that was trendy, do u wear it a lot? Is it a huge part of ur wardrobe that ur going to wear all the time? For me, the ones I bought tend to not be, and were just bought because I saw it on instagram or a catwalk. I get so much more satisfaction when buying things that I know I can work into my wardrobe all the time, as well as stuff I've invested in for quality for example. Fab video xx

brandy clothes evolve w the current trends amazingly well. i mean, give credit where credit is due! and so, i feel like their whole thing is making their clothes feel like (precisely as u said @ ur own style) the 'cool girl clothes' and by buying said clothes ur also buying into that fantasy/ideology. (we live in a society) ;0

I feel like they used to make tumblr style basic clothes, when that was the style, and now they make cute 90s Pinterest style clothes, and are the type of store that change to be what is the trendy thing, which is why so many girls find their clothes appealing.

i’ve stopped shopping there as much because over the years the items have been getting more cropped and i have a really long torso and i mean school dress codes would never let me and i just don’t feel that comfortable in crop tops. i used to think i was too big for brandy bc my legs r kinda muscular. but now i honestly don’t care 🤷‍♀️ i don’t need to lose weight for clothes when i’m already naturally pretty skinny

when people work at brandy melville, they have pictures of their outfits taken as “inspiration” for the future clothes sold there. this video goes along with that because they’re constantly taking whatever trends they see to be popular and modeling their clothes after them. i bet they also did this in the past and it’s how their clothing evolved as we did.

ahaha i've shopped at brandy melville for a while and ur right their clothes changed so much since then.
this video just got recommended to me and i've never seen a youtuber talk about this kind of topic/marketing! i've been thinking about this too (i like business too) and it's really interesting.
however, I feel like brandy's going to ruin their aesthetic if they're not careful, bc younger and younger girls are wearing it and it's getting sort of cheesier and less appealing for the older teens. apparently their clothes are literally getting smaller (as someone mentioned). idk about others but i would stop wearing it if it was what all the 12 year old were wearing lol

I've shopped at brandy Melville for about 7 years now, and its so hard because I love the quality of their clothes but I don't feel I'm their target market. I'm not super big but I'm definitely not a size 2 and It was definitely harder when I was younger and even skinnier than I am now to only be able to fit into some of their clothes but I've learned that it doesn't matter how it fits he model it just matters how I want it to fit on MY body!!

idk if people are still watching this, but a really good point that i think was implied is that these "ideal body type" girls are considered automatically "cool" by society. and so to use these girls to market your clothing has the same effect as celebrity marketing. no matter what clothing their wearing, we are automatically drawn to these girls because they are, in a way, ideal. how can i be more like them? how can i look like that? well the most explicit way to do so is wear their clothes.
it is unfortunately a good tactic if you want to make money. and that is what is so incredibly sad about the fashion industry in general. this is why it is so important to acknowledge companies that have a variety of body shapes as their models. a good example of this recently is American Eagle. they are not necessarily an ethical clothing store by way of production or fast-fashion marketing, but they do a great job of including all body types in their marketing which i think is quite commendable. i don't personally shop there, but i think it is sad that other companies probably wont be compelled to adopt that, because it's simply not helping them financially. but on the other hand, the fast-fashion industry is just corrupted by money, social idealism and convenience. we should all be consciously trying to break free from that.
