I'm having a great time watching your youtube channel. Keep up the amazing work.
6:30 back stitching to secure the thread ends is the standard procedure for using a sewing machine. But it is a dead give away that the piece has been machine stitched. ... Here's how to secure the threads/stitches without back stitching. ... Start sewing making sure you have a good 3-4 inches of thread tail at the beginning and at the end of your stitching... Don't back stitch! Remove the piece from the machine. Pull on the bottom thread until the top thread's loop vs be seen. Pull that top thread tail to the back and tie the top and bottom thread tails into a square knot, cut and melt the ends into the knot. It will be impossible to tell a machine stitched piece from a really good hand piece... even when checking the back. Sending lots of love 💖 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵😷
I've been just printing the patterns for carving on printer paper and then lay it over the leather and then poke holes along the lines, no more than 1/8in apart, with a small awl, not too much force, just enough to make a tiny yet visible hole so that I can go back and trace over the lines with a pencil and then start carving. But then recently I got some Celtic knotwork patterns with these transparent sheets with a raised ridge running along the lines on one side, which seems to allow me to wet the leather, lay the sheet with the ridges facing down onto the leather, and either roll a rolling-pin or roller over it, pressing down hard, or lightly hammer with a rubber mallet, and it seems to make visible indentations in the leather (not sure if that is how they are intended to be used 😅).
Literally just got all of the material and tools from the super helpful folks at Lonsdale Leather for the old shoulder pattern, not sure which one to go with now!! 😁
@@DarkHorseWorkshop Definitely will have to try both! Also excited to work with some Acrylic paints on leather as well. Random question - do you have a suggestion for a good Airbrush / Compressor combo for hobbyists?
Just need to scale them up and down and do tests until they fit right. Free is tough, especially for armor. I do have a 50% off coupon for first time buyers on my website though when you access it darkhorseworkshop.com

@@DarkHorseWorkshop If I liked you before, I definitely love you now! 😁 I didn't know there was much need for Spanish in Canada but it's nice to see when someone is able to say thank you to someone in their language. All the best to you.
I've heard (a while back, admittedly) that using an awl for rivet holes is better than a punch because a punch cuts the leather, whereas an awl essentially pushes between the fingers and keeps them more intact. Have you had any feedback from other leatherworkers on this? Looking at techniques for longevity's sake, and wondered how this realizes in practice. I appreciate any feedback!
I’d really like to see a vambrace that goes a little over the top of the hand and maybe a little strap around the palm? All the bracers I’ve seen stop right at the wrist and I’m not such a fan
Hi, I've been following you for a long time and finally decided to start making leather stuff. The thing is that where I live the leather is meassured in mm not oz and I can't find a reliable conversion from oz to mm. Could you tell me at least the thicknes (it could be in inches, that I can convert easily) of the 10, 12 and 14 oz that you use in this build? For what I've been asking around the maximum thicknes I can buy is 3.5mm. There's another "leather kind" that's also veg tan and it's thicker but at the shop they told me it is used to make shoe soles and it can't be wet molded because it's too hard. Do you know if that's true? Maybe they simply don't know because they usually sell to shoe and furniture makers. Thanks for all the videos and iformation you gave us all the time. I hope you can answer my questions. Cheers!
Where did you get the anvil with the grooves for round head rivets? Best I've been able to do is a steel dapping cube. Gets the job done, but not much surface area.
If I was doing this for more historical accuracy or for costumes I might use water and heat to form the pieces. I do this for SCA rattan combat, it's not a great idea for everything.
I have some questions regarding your waxing process if you don't mind answering, since it seems far more efficient than my current method. You said you use paraffin wax, can you use beeswax instead? Do you leave the wax in the cooker after your done or do you empty it out or let it harden and heat it up again later? Thanks in advance.
I'd be interested in what if any difference there is with a few wax options. I did a mix for ages of bees and paraffin and just eventually did straight paraffin.
I step on to the list field with an elk's ass on my shoulders and I'm gonna keep doing that cause it's way funnier! However, these are super pretty and very well made.

About time it's on a video Magnus.
Good job!

Love the drawings, man. These pads are killer.

Thank you for makeing this i am going to use this for my Halloween costume
Have fun!
Is this men's size? For women how much smaller do I have to make this? Thanks!
Honestly they're at a spot where they'd just be a bit bigger shoulders on women but I've made them for women and never adjusted the size.
Could do a quick taped pattern out of paper if you were worried about it and give it a look, but I wouldn't adjust it down too much if you decide to.
Before you sell everything, please do a short video with you all dressed up in all your gear. Thanks. 💖🌞🌵😷
I was wanting to know if you knew where to get some good free base patterns to work from and how to adjust patterns I already own to fit my size

Do the patterns indicate proper placement of the 3 plates? What about extra large shoulders?
There's a larger size of these shoulders and they have all the proper holes marked etc.
Very cool build indeed, I just love it!
Just bought the armor pack. Quick question how do you resize the legs and other pieces other than the cuirass? Sorry I’m new.
had you ever done a functional battle ready leather piece?

In a perfect world you'd awl or machine sew or pricking iron. But you have to weight that against ease of use is all. Harder to stitch smaller holes.

So a soft vambrace? More costume? Anything rigid that'd be a bad idea probably.
Hi. I was looking at your Anvil and was wondering if it came with the rivet reliefs or you had them machined in ? For Leather working what size ?
I drilled them myself carefully.
I am just starting leathercraft. Do you have any 101 type starter vids? I joined your site and I am looking forward to my new retirement hobby.
Send me an email so this message doesn't get lost abd I'll link what I have but you can also dig around and find some. Info@darkhorseworkshop.com
What do you do with the scraps?
Depends on the size... future projects or garbage. I have lots of scraps. Sometimes I sell boxes of them.
Do you wet the edges of your leather when you burnish them or just go dry?
Me encantaría que cuando termina sus armaduras, las probará en si mismo.
Así como modelandolas

This is cool thank you....👍👍
Thank you too!
Where can I buy an anvil with these molds for rivets?
Where did you get the anvil you have? I can’t find one with the river setter anywhere.
I drilled into it. ;)
What is the name of the stitching machine at 7:20?
Leather machine co. Cobra Class 4
Where did you get the anvil with the grooves for round head rivets? Best I've been able to do is a steel dapping cube. Gets the job done, but not much surface area.
Just curious as to how much leather you used for this kit?
Hmmm...2 square feet? Plus strapping.
Where would one find the buckles and pins for these designs?
I get some head peening rivets from rivetsonline.com and buckles from Lonsdale leather.
eso aguanta un espadaso?
Есть ли смысл делать защиту из кожы, когда проще будет из дерева?
Hi, I'm Czech and I don't speak much English. What did you cook leather in?
Paraffin wax

Bees way alone is too soft I find. Some people mix it with paraffin . I just use paraffin and leave it in the cooker after.
@@DarkHorseWorkshop Thank you, I will have to experiment a bit more with both and see how it turns out.

@@DarkHorseWorkshop oh okay thanks
I have had success using 50% beeswax and 50% Carnuba wax.. It makes it super strong.

you shouldvexplain that leather because of its expence was rearly used as actual armor
My brain made me click on this by saying
"Ye but what if you DO need to make leather armor at some point"
Solid choice.
