    What a great man God raised up in Roger Williams and a vessel who helped give us freedoms we should never take lightly or for granted. A visionary well ahead of his time and a true libertarian. His name should be much more widely known and given the recognition due unto him. The same applies to the great woman amongst American Puritans, Anne Hutchinson who did much to advance the cause of women as well as being a stalwart defender of the Biblical Gospel of Free Grace.

      Exact same sort of censorious mindset although banishings and burnings aren't acceptable in today's West. They still want freedoms curtailed and the full force of the law thrust upon transgressors as well as not being averse to physical violence being meted out.

    Wow. Roger Williams is amazing. People are trying to figure out who he was. Yeah the name sounds familiar. Then I remembered this sounds like Robin Williams. That other guy is a whole lot more famous. He is the comedian, who did the Genie in Disney's Aladdin. There is mention of someone in the music industry. The closest I can think of is Roger Waters, my favorite member of Pink Floyd. He is so awesome. He is a musical genius. There is also Roger Taylor, the drummer from Queen. Pink Floyd and Queen are two of my favorite bands, so those are the two that come to my mind. Both bands were around in the eighties, even though I think thier heyday was seventies.. Seventies rocked hard!The musicians and comedian are like Roger Williams in having similar names. I hear the name, and I get a bit closer. I think of Roger Willaims as being the Rhode Island guy. This is closer to reality. I have vague memories of learning about the colonies in American history class. This was way back in college. The northern side had a whole bunch of Christian groups forming thier own colonies. I remember some being more radical and appealing. Roger Williams of Rhode Island was one. The Quakers of Pensylvania were another. They were my favorite at the time. My biggest take-home for the course is that the north as a whole was better. It started out being religious. Then it branched into social movements, technology and industry. It even won the Civil War.
    Now I am long been out of school. I am doing a personal project about Christian denominations. So I have been doing lots of reaserch. I am almost done with it. RUclips is a big help for reaserch. I found this documentary and watched it for the heck of it. Oh my gosh! This is amazing. It blew me away. There is a good Quaker Documentary that also blew me away. It is titled "Quakers: That of God in Everyone". I wonder if this documentary is on this channel. I find the variations of Christian denominations interesting. Then I get into history. It is tricky to figure out who's side to pick. I am generally neutral between Catholic and Protestant. Then as I research denomination, I find that I like some better than other. These are my top five favorite denominations. Number 5 is Catholic. Number 4 is Babtist. Number 3 is Anglican and Number 2 is Lutherin. Number 1 is Quaker.
    There is a theme of this documentary about religious freedom. Religion has a nasty tendency to cause fights. It is even a taboo subject in polite conversation. There are attempts to quell the fighting. Since government is supposed to keep law and order, it has made it its buissness to keep religion from causing fights. The earliest example I know of is the Roman Empire. It had an approach which I can best describe as integration. Back then different cultures had different religions that fell under the umbrella of Paganism. Rome had its own state religion. The deities are essentially the Greek Deities with Roman names. Rome also included deities or conquered people into its pantheon. If two deities were similar enough in thier specialty, they can even merge into one. This combination is a form of religious integration. I like that. It is very accommodating to a variety of beliefs while still keeping the peace. Since I identify as Pagan myself, I am going to be wholly biased in favor of the Romans over any Abrahamic religions. Christians were a big problem in the empire. They refused to go along with the integrated state religion because they were stubborn monotheists. Romans responded by harshly punishing Christians with death. Even Jesus was mainly killed off by the Romans. Later Emperer Constantine accepted Christians into the empire. He and the Councel of Nicea formed the Roman Catholic Church. The Catholics is essentially Paganism with Christianity integrated in. There are a lot of the rituals, imagery and holy figures like the Roman Pagan religion, except that it is about Jesus. This integration makes it easier to convert Pagans to Christianity. It also makes the religion more grounded where it is easier to access the divine. As I did my research, I liked the Catholics even more. Part of it is me appreciating its orgions. The Pagan aspect is a positive for me. I also found some truly horrifying Christian groups. These are groups that put tight control over the lifestyle of the followers. Some go to such an extreme that they even form thier own isolated communities. By contrast this makes me appreciate the mainstream nature of Catholics all the more. There is still the major flaw of having clergy, that is too powerful. Still Catholics are good enough that it bearly makes my top five.

      Then there are the Protestants. In my recent reaserch, I have come to like Martin Luther so much more. He is mainly known for being the founder of Protestantism. However what he was really trying to do is fix the problems of the Catholic Church, without going outside it. He was a genius of Christian reform. The main flaw with Catholocism is powerful clergy. Such people can succum to corruption and tyranny. Martain Luther recognized some very severe corruption of the clergy of his day. So he opted to solve that problem. His publishing of the Bible in common language was a huge step forward in ensuring religious independence of the people. The Catholics persecuted the early Protestants,, and they were divided ever since.. I still like Catholics and Protestants equally. There are just some Protestant denominations better than Catholic and some worse. So they cancel out. I am finding that there is a divide between conservative and liberal Protestants. The conservatives are more similar to the Catholics. These two groups also fought against each other. I am not quite sure which side to go on. They have thier pros and cons. The conservative side has a lot. of appeal. What makes this side good is that it mixes Catholic and Protestant together in attempt to find a happy medium.. This is an amazing thing,, and I even came up with the idea on my own.. The two main denomination are Lutherin and Anglican. Both are in my top five. I like Lutherin a bit better, because I admire Martin Luther so much. This is an amazing denomination with a lot of benefits and very few downsides. Anglican is great too. It is a well rounded denomination with a nice value of via media. The Anglicans are antagonists in this documentary. However the presentation is so objective that it is possible to find good things. This makes me like Anglicans all the more. I learned some cool things about them. One is that there was an English monarch after King Henry named King James. That is how the King James Bible got its name. Cool. Another is that England had a problem with the Catholics and Protestants fighting, so they formed Anglicanism in attempt to solve the problem. So this is the kind of integration as before. The Romans integrated different Pagan religions. Than Catholics integrated that Roman Paganism with Christianity. So Anglicans in turn integrated that Catholisism with Protestantism. That is an amazing idea. Lutherin is conservative in that it seems to be a transitional form from Catholics to liberal Protestants. Anglican is conservative in that it recombines both sides. That is an amazing idea. When it comes to religious fighting in the UK, the worse of it is Northern Ireland. Oh my gosh, that place is a dumpster fire. It was even mentioned briefly in the video. I look at that and say "Fair enough". That is a good case of the English trying to form a state religion to stop such violence. Maybe there is a way to solve the Ireland problem. First have the nation of Ireland have full control over its island. The UK has full control of the island of Britain, but no portion of Ireland. Then have Ireland have its own version of Anglicanism. This can help stop the religious infighting. Ireland is one of the places with Celtic people. The Cetic people had a great Pagan religion way back when. It had the druids and all of that.. So I would like that but with light sprinklings of Jesus. Since the main part of Ireland is mainly Catholic, this can be an especially light sprinkling. There can be a lot of cool and pretty celtic art in the iconography of the church. There can be the worshop of all the anchient Celtic deities in the form of saints. They would definitely have Saint Bridget for example. Heck, the Methodists had sermons outdoors and got away with it. Maybe this new Irish denomination can have sermons and other rituals in the sacred tree groves. So this Irish form of Cristianity would be Catholic in the terms of fancy rituals with lots of imagery and saints. There is a Celtic flavor to it. Yet this group is entirely independent of the Pope and any other outside denomination. So in this sense it is Protestant. So it has the essential via media of Anglican but it better retains Irish culture. If one really wanted to go the extra mile, they could have full blown religious freedom. The new Irish Christian denomination can coexist in peace with the Catholics and other Protestant groups. While they are at it, they may as well provide freedom to the Celtic pagans. There are attempts to revive that old religion. This is a wonderful thing. It should be encouraged, or at least left in peace.

      Now I am going to the liberal Protestants. These guys are tricky. It is hard to tell whether to root for them or not. There are some groups I like and some I don't like. The conservative Christians are a great group overall, but they are not perfect. They did persecute the liberal Prostestents early in the times of reformation. Even Martain Luther is tricky at times. On one hand, he was persecuted by the Catholics especially Pope Leo. He had wealthy allies,, who protected and hid him.. On the other hand he was not as supportive of Jews, peasants and liberal Christians as I would have liked. I still greatly admire Martin Luther. However the lack of support is his biggest flaw. I do realized that this guy had to make some difficult choices, and his life was in danger. The flaws may even a sacrifice. Being dismissive or even hostile to a certain persecuted group is bad in the short term. However it does have the benefit of making oneself look better in the eyes of the elite. Martain Luther couldn't afford to alienate his wealthy allies like he alienated the Vatican. There is a good choice that one or both of them would kill him. So being on good terms with the allies would keep him alive longer. If Martain Luther lived one, he could do so much more good. It is better than getting martyred at a young age. Martain Luther could have had time to make more good content like the 95 thesis, the Germin Bible and the Lutherin denomination. There is benefit in the long term even if there was some short term sacrifices. In a time of great change and upheaval, one can go down the slippery slope to become too extreme. That has its own problems. There were liberal Protestant groups arising. A major group is anababtist. When I hear the name, I think of Babtist. Babtist is the main denomination of liberal Protestant. Babtists are a great group. It is also in my top five. What I like about Babtists is that they body look to the Bible for guidance at the expense of clergy. The Babtist approach to clergy is what I like to call minimal. There are still churches to worshop in and pasters to run it. However both are completely independent they don't have any other bigger clergy to answer to. They just have to answer to God. I like that. It is bold and radical, but it works. Minimal clergy is a wonderful idea. The main thing that Babtists are known for is thier habit of Babtizing. That is where they get thier name from. I like that part too. It is wrong to force religion on children is wrong. Children are very vulnerable to brainwashing due to how thier brains develop. So they shouldn't get taught religion at all until they are older. Waiting until people are adults to babtise them is a very good idea. It can help keep the brainwashing at bay. Babtist argue that a child and especially a baby is too young to understand religion, so they can't really convert. That is a good point. I wonder if Roger Wiliams himself was Babtist. This video doesn't make it clear what denomination he was in. It said that he was Puritan and later went off to do his own thing. It doesn't say what the name of his new denomination was. There is mention of Babtists getting inspiration from him at the end. I better look into this further. So the Babtists are great by me. There is history of the conservitive Protestants persecuting the liberals. It is so hard for me to pick a side. On one hand the conservatives seem good for being a well rounded group. On the other side the liberals are the victims. Being a victim is something that easily draws sympathy. One group that was picked on was Anababtists. These seem to be a precursor, to the awesome Babtist group. So these guys seem to be a good group. The conservatives did kill Anababtists by drowning, which made a mockery of babtizing. That is so messed up. Funny thing is that the liberal Protestants are not all innocent and good. Some went bad. Martain Luther was right to object to the obscene gluttony and greed of the Pope. It sharply contrasted to his own ascetic life as a monk. It also goes against Jesus teachings of charity.. This is a case where the accusation of hypocrisy would make sense. I make this accusation myself. I would say the same thing about modern Evengelical megachurches. Unfortually some Protestants apparently went way too far in the opposite direction. They force a restrictive lifestyle on followers in attempt to make them more righteous. This would be harsh restrictions on carnal pleasures. I have no problem with any monk, nun or other religious person that adopts an ascetic lifestyle by choice. Martain Luther did this, and he was fine. He even went against the wishes of his parents. However forcing that on other people is wring. It is a whole different kind of religious tyranny. It is just at bad as the worst of the Catholics. Catholics are great overall. However they can be really horrific and nasty, when at thier worst.
      Puritans are one liberal group that went bad. They enforce harsh restrictions on the people. The north is overall a lot better than the south. One of the biggest benefits is the banning of slavery. Yet this side isn't perfect. The one bad thing the north did was the Salem Trials. It is tiny problem compared to the centuries of slavery the South had. Yet it is still a problem. The Puritans were the ones responsible for that ncident. There was a time that the Anglicans were persecuting the Puritans. That made the Puritans flee to America. The comedian Robin Wiliams talked about it, and this is hilarious. Anglicans are Cathloic lite. The Puritans were so uptight that the British kicked them out. How freaking anal does one have to be if even the British with stiff upper lip can't stand them. The British are like, "Just get on your Mayflower and go". LOL Joking aside, I am seeing some repeat of history. This seems to be a case of a big religious group bullying smaller one. However the smaller one succeeds to make thier own group that ends up bullying others. There may be a cycle of abuse going on. I actually find the big group more sympathetic and appealing. At least by thier integration, they are trying to make a solution. They are not perfect, but at least they are the ones doing better. The Romans bullied the Christians. Later the Chrstians came to power and bully non-Christians. Heck they will even persecute each other. The main reason why I am not a Christian is the bloody history of persecution especially to Pagans and scientists. It is still a fascinating group to examine and learn about. The biggest shock to me is that the Mennonites came out of the early Anababtist movement, and that group in turn formed the Amish. Oh my gosh! The Amaish. This is harsh Protestant lifestyle policing to the extreme. I am talking about completely isolated communities with strict rules. They don't have anything from modern mainstream life, not even electricity. I don't just have a top five. I studied sixteen major Christian denominations and ranked them from worst to best. The Amish are placed at the number one worst spot. This is also the 16th best. This group is that bad. Mennonite is the second worst. They are a tad batter as some mennonite groups relax the restrictions on technology. Having the persecuted Anababtists turn around and create the Amish of all things is one heck of a twist.

    • @sylviadailey9126
      @sylviadailey9126 2 года назад

      There are groups in the American colonies. It seems that quite a few of the more liberal Protestants have made a home here. The main one is Protestant. The Amish have thier founder as some European guy, but they mainly live in the United States. The ones I remember liking the most are the most radical. They are the ones that are really into freedom. They greatly oppose tyranny of thier dy. Tyranny is a big problem in Christianity. So anybody that can solve it is going to appeal to me. The Catholics have tyranny in excessively powerful clergy. The Puritans, Mennonite and Amish have tyranny in exercise control over lifestyle. They are complete opposites and yet both have thier problems. My favorite Christian group is the Quakers. They were my favorite back in history class. Now they are still my favorite once I got to know them in depth. Quakers take radical freedom to an extreme compared to other Christian groups. They don't just have reduced clergy hierchy or detachment from the Vatican. They straight up claim that clergy isn't necessary all. People can access God directly. Everyone has a spark of God within them, and they can tap into them. Quakers actually have this executed very well. They don't degrade into horrible chaos and anarchy. They have just enough order to work out well. There is a lot about the Quakers that I like. I like thier values of freedom. I like thier values of peace and equality. I like thier practice of sient worshop. It is a lot like meditation. I like thier impressive history of community service. Quakers are awesome. There is enough morality in thier values and self control n thier silent worshop to keep them in check. Oh an the documentary "Quakers:That of God in Everyone" is on the same channel as this Roger Williams documentary. It focuses more on the history of community service. If anyone is interested, go watch it. I recently learned that Quakers have suffered persecution. That makes me so sad. I wonder why that happened. I am guessing it is because the Quakers radiclly shook up the status quo a lot. So some people found that threatening. So they crushed Quakers. Funny thing is that when I put in effort to learn about Quakers I find that they are really good people. So people objecting to them are likely to be in the wrong. The objectors even seem paranoid to me. The Quakers are really into pacifism. That makes them a whole lot less threatening than they would otherwise be. Even the way people speak in the Quaker documentary sounds so gentle and kind. The only time that Quakers fought in the documentary was in the northern army during the Civil War. Even then there was debate.. They justified it as helping bring equality to the slaves. To that, I say it was a fair point. I agree that the northern army was in the right. The South had it coming even if they didn't actually invade the north. What they did to African Americans was wrong, and it needed to stop. This issue did make me reconsider the ethics involving war and violence.. I like the pacifism of the Quakers.. I am so sick of people fighting over religion, and even spilling blood over it.. So pacifism is at the very east refreshing.. So even if someone didn't agree with Quaker beliefs, they can't deny that Quakers are peaceful enough to be non-threatening. Just let Quakers do thier own thing and just chill. No harm no foul. If anything, the Quakers may end up helping the community by aiding the outcasts. If someone is still scared enough of Quakers to lash out, then that comes off as paranoid.
      Then I am getting to Roger Williams. Dude finally. I thought it would be good to give some background and context, but I went nuts. So this is basically my summary of Christian history, and my thoughts on it. I can't talk about everything because I will go on forever. My biggest omission is the Great scism and the East Orthodox. I thought controversy was petty, so it isn't all that relevant. The major branch to oppose Catholics is the Protestants. They have major differences that are difficult to mend together. Long story short I notice a pattern of integration to solve religious conflict. The Romans integrated various Pagan religions in the empire. The Catholics integrate Roman Paganism with Christianity. The Anglicans integrate Cathocism with Protestantism. It keeps going, and more groups get accreted on and eventually get blended in. This is a good thing. It is certainly a heck of a lot better than people fighting incessantly over religion. However at the back of my mind, I do realize that this isn't ideal. What would be ideal is to have people have complete freedom of religion. Everybody follows the religion they want. They can even opt out of religion altogether into want to. Everybody also respects the religion of everybody else. They don't proselytize or fight ever. Pretty much the only reason why I object to certain religious groups is if they treat other people poorly and use religion to justify it. Religion should not be used as an excuse to control or fight others. For example Quakers and Amish may seem similar at first, especially due to sharing a plain aesthetic. However I think Quakers are far superior just on the way they treat people with such kindness. This measurement is the main way I rank groups. I am an American, so this is really hard to ignore. We really gush about freedom of religion among other freedoms. It is in the Bill of Rights. The courts have interpreted this as a separation of church and state to ensure the freedom. Freedom is important.

      Okay. I am finally talking about Roger Willaims. Yay! This guy is amazing. This whole documentary just blew my mind. I wonder if there are any other good documentaries on Christian history on this channel. If I am lucky, I will find one for each of mytop five. Heavin forbid there is a documentary about Martain Luther. I would watch the heck out of that. I have already seen some good documentaries like that on RUclips. I was talking about how religious integration was a good thing, but then lamented that it wasn't ideal. Well Roger Williams is essentially the guy to go so much further, and find this ideal. I am not a fan of Puritans in general. However it is cool that Roger Willaims was once a Puritan who rebelled against the tyranny. Then he made a great leap forward for freedom of the people. It is like how Martain Luther was once a Catholic, who rebelled against that tyranny and made a great leap forward. In both cases the tyranny must be really horrible if even one if its own members can't stand it. Roger Willaims made the great innovation on using religious freedom to stap religious conflict. He even went into separation of church and state. I had no idea that was a thing back in coloal times. I thought it came in court cases long after the creation of the United States and the Bill of Rights. Roger Willaims may seem radical at first. He may even seem threatening to paranoid Puritans. However he was a brilliant even genius man. He made the innovation of freedom of religion. That is amazing. We may not all remember who he was. However we can know and appreciate his legacy in his civil liberty.
