    As a Portuguese living abroad, it's a pleasure to see a nice honest cost of living breakdown with real numbers. Good deal on the flat. Rent can be really high in the center of Lisbon. Wish you all the best and please go visit the rest of the country. Rent a car on the weekend and drive around. You won't regret it ;)

    The transport costs have changed: it's a maximum of 80 euros per family, regardless of how many people are in your family they all get a pass which allows unlimited traveling at any time, alone or together. Also, transportation is only free for children up to 4 years old, after that they pay half price until they're teenagers. If they go to college after they turn 18, they will have a discount from 18 until 24 I think, with an adult student pass. I just thought you'd like to know. You can call Carris and ask all about this, they give you the option to speak in English right at the beginning of the call. In what concerns healthcare, Portugal has nearly free Healthcare, you pay something like 4 euros per consultation with a doctor in the public Healthcare system. I'm glad you're enjoying Portugal, I myself wish I was very far away from here, just like the vast majority of the population who is forced to survive on the 600 euro minimum wage. .. Sending you much love ❤️

    I personally prefer smaller cities, because I hate commuting and I love having lunch at home with family every day. Some info about cost my city (in Spain):
    -Average apartment (3Bed/2Bath): 850€/month (less than 15 min walking to city center, probably less than 15 min by car to your job no matter where you live)
    -British (private) school: 1000€/month. Every other semi-private school (40% of kids go): 70-150€/month, voluntary fees, scholarships available. Bus: 100€/month. Lunch:100€/month or 30€/month if you bring it from home Public schools are free (including bus to school). Both systems are great. English is taught as early as daycare and a third language is mandatory (German or French are the most common)
    -hair cut: 10€ men/15€ women
    Gym membership: 30€/month everything included
    -health insurance: around 70€/adult, kids for free or very little. However, public health is great and cover everything and medication is affordable. Where I live, with my income (more than the minimum wage), you would pay less than 8€/month on medication. You can buy it in any pharmacy, prescription is electronic. Nothing like in the US. Really, nothing like it 🙈
    -food: INCREDIBLY GOOD, similar to Portugal in cost ❤️
    -college: public universities 1000-2000€/year, scholarships available, reduced tuition for large families (3-4 kids, 50% off. 5 kids or more in the family, 100% discount). Private universities vary, but 10000€/year could be a good average.
    -monthly unlimited bus card: 30€ (24€ if you are under 26, 21€ large families)
    -Job conditions: 30 days of paid vacation, maternity leave of 16 weeks, paternity leave currently on 8 weeks (12 weeks in 2020 and 16 weeks for babies born in 2021 and after)
    -Dentist: it varies a lot, but fixing a cavity cost me 55€ last time I did it 😂

      Alicia - Wow! Thank you for sharing your numbers in such detail! It gives people a great view of actual Portugal versus Spain costs! :)

    • @007linkstar
      @007linkstar 4 года назад +2

      @@OurRichJourney well, living in Madrid or Barcelona would be more similar. Large cities are wayy more expensive. Of course, with a US income everything seems "cheaper". But the average Spaniard can't afford 1600€/month in rent and lives in the suburbs. I live in a rural area and that gets my rent down to 400€/month. But my commute to work is a 13 minutes drive 🙈

    • @michellexu1725
      @michellexu1725 4 года назад

      Alicia M do you mind to share which city you are in? I am considering to move to Spain.

    • @007linkstar
      @007linkstar 4 года назад +2

      @@michellexu1725 I'm currently in Pamplona, Navarra. Similar cities with a bit higher or lower cost of living could be: Gijón (in Asturias and with beach, I LOVE it!!), Oviedo (also in Asturias), Logroño (in La Rioja, it's growing a lot and very friendly) or León (in Castilla y León, beautiful but sadly is losing population). Those would be in the North. Galicia is gorgeous, next to Portugal, but it is not very well connected with the rest of the country (except Ryanair flights to Madrid). The North has, in general, more industry. The South and the coast have a lot of tourism and seasonal jobs. Cádiz in the South is gorgeous. Avoid Madrid and Barcelona because the price of housing is terrible (unless you are making a lot of money from renting your place somewhere else...)
      It all depends on the type of lifestyle you have/like. For families and day-to-day life, I would choose small-medium cities. If you want great cultural options, concerts, etc. Every day, then Madrid and Barcelona.

    • @JuanCarlos49086
      @JuanCarlos49086 4 года назад +1

      @@withthesun13 Well, not everyone wants to stay in the US. I don't want to retire here. While your country may be expenisve, some places in the world are less expensive than the US. California and New York are great examples of expensive places. Healthcare is expensive. It's violent especially in the suburbs where I live now. So many drugs here. It's not that great here. That's my opinion. I'm sorry. 😅

    • @ariefraiser140
      @ariefraiser140 4 года назад +2

      @@withthesun13 I doubt prices are 5 times the U.S. I've been to Brazil and while they're some things that are pricy nowhere matched San Francisco or NYC prices. Besides. Logically salaries in Brazil are nowhere as high as the US and certainly not 5 times higher then the US so logically prices aren't going to rise 5 times higher since hardly anyone could afford it.

  • @SpadesHeart
    @SpadesHeart 4 года назад +3

    Oh hey, I posted asking about this on your last video!
    Okay, so for a family of 4, that's not bad at all; averaging like $1200 a month per person. My current life is much more hacked to reduce cost to an almost absurd degree, but my current life wouldn't at all be sustainable with an actual family without significant alteration. Your quality of life is excellent for what you pay, and you've definitely made an awesome choice for yourself.
    Based on what your listing here, not including the private school, I'm assuming halving the rent on like a 2 bedroom further out of the city but near a subway line, someone may be able to cut this to 2-3 k, which is also amazing. If you were to house hack with Airbnb there, I have to imagine you could get close to living for free with really minimal work. Not for you guys obviously, but definitely an option for other people pursuing FIRE. Especially if you were in the position, and were inclined to purchase property. This kind of routing could very well make this viable for someone with a FIRE number of something like $500k or less if something like your $1.4m wasn't attainable in a reasonable time frame.
    I am a single person and have been doing it alone. There definitely is a greater ease doing it as a team if you have congruent goals, and that's your greatest strength really. I've been quite lucky, am still quite young, and do need to work harder, but it's good to have discourse and examples like this on how to best work smarter!

    • @OurRichJourney
      @OurRichJourney  4 года назад +3

      Hey there SpadesHeart! Yes - I definitely believe you could cut our numbers down to at least $3k - even more if you house hack or live further out of the city. One thing I would recommend - think of all the places that you seriously have strong feelings about retiring to and base your FIRE number off of the most expensive place. For us, our most expensive place we wanted to retire was the San Francisco Bay Area, so we based our FIRE number off of that instead of Portugal (so our number isn't $1.4M). We did this because we didn't want to restrict ourselves to Portugal forever. For example, if our kids both decide to go to college in California (where we both went to school), we want to be open to having the option to move back to California during that time. I'm not saying that we will, but we want that option. If we would have based our FIRE number off of Portugal, we would never have the option of going back to California.

    it's super reasonable to live there. We are empty nesters but we both work full-time and our medical insurance premiums alone cost us a little over $1,000 per month; that includes medical, dental, vision, and drug. Thank you for doing these videos. Your girls are super lucky to have you as parents because they will learn how to handle their money and how to invest which is something that our parents knew nothing about. And, they are experiencing things that most children will never experience. We, your viewers, are also learning these things and we get see your plan actually come to fruition. It's nice to know that this plan really works. 🙂👍

    Living in Lisbon is very expensive, mainly due to the cost of rent.
    If you choose a city other than Lisbon or Porto, these costs may fall by half!
    I think Braga has the best value for money, as it is the third largest city in Portugal, with a large offer of services, but with a much lower cost of living...
    Braga has one of the best hospitals in the country, one of the best universities, it is considered the youngest city in Portugal. The city has many parties and events throughout the year, as well as tourism options.

    One downside of Portugal over Spain is the toll roads. I visited, rented a car and needed to pay a toll to get around the city, then didn't collect the correct slip entering and paid a penalty fare on exiting the toll. Spain had no tolls, great driving. Portugal does have a great atmosphere though.

  • @Fassislau
    @Fassislau 4 года назад

    Just a bit of perspective. I love your transparency and your honesty. Just to state that after watching 50 videos of you living "the frugal lifestyle" I was incredibly suprised with the expenses. Usually, a typical portuguese family has a median salary of 2000€/month. Even though you got a "good deal" on the appartment, just to mention that a typical PT family usually would not live in the center of Lisbon because of that high price and would not have enough money for two kids to go on private school. So, what for you might be "frugal" , for a PT is just the "normal lifestyle" , since there is no money for more. :) I loved the video anyway. Thank you for sharing.

    You can probably use the public universities to learn the language for FREE. ISCTE has some classes for non portuguese speakers where you can enroll, and classes are small and pretty cheap or free if I recall. Also, the area where you guys live is a Premium area (it looks like Saldanha). Go to less sought out neighborhoods and rents decrease more.

    • @OurRichJourney
      @OurRichJourney  4 года назад +28

      Great question! Our budget was actually based off of living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Since we decided to retire in Portugal, and because the cost of living is so much more affordable here compared to the Bay Area, we aren't pulling out 4% from our investment portfolio. Because we're pulling out less than 4%, we leave more money in our investment portfolio and it continues to grow even more.

    I’m coming to Portugal as a single person so when I do move this would be a lot cheaper. My health insurance, grocery, travel expenses, and bills will a lot cheaper. I’ll at least be spending less than half of this. I may not choose Lisbon due to the expensive apartments but it’s still on radar. Silver coast and central are some of my options too. I’ll see when I visit. I want to live where I can be near a lot of grocery shops, restaurants and businesses to eliminate me having a car.

      they were probably getting hit with the foreigner tax/premium. 2400$ in that area is a bit of a stretch. And granted they are renting this place during a high period. Rents in these apartments just 4-5 years ago could be had for 700 dollars. Real Estate has gone through the roof in Portugal for the past 5 years

      @@mcarroll78 easy. The asking price was not the true market price. Lisbon is getting got with lots of tourism and foreigners, and to most foreigners prices are cheaper way cheaper than what they are used to. Locals when advertising jack prices up to see if people that are not as familiar with the local prices bite the deal. Any Portuguese person knows that the advertised prices are most likely super inflated, therefore there's lots of room for some negotiation. Same thing happens on selling asking prices especially the closer you get to the values of golden visas - a foreigner out of Europe especially Chinese or Angola don't mind paying 450k for a house that is only worth 350k as long as those 450k comes with a guaranteed EU resident visa
