The undisputed world heavyweight champion of funk, soul, gospel, and rhythm & blues. A true artist. A damn fine human being tragically taken too soon. 🙏 🕯️ Curtis Mayfield
Another masterpiece by Curtis. Every word, every note was genius, perfectly expressed and placed. The lyrics were sincerely felt by Curtis. You could feel the pain in his voice.
You guys hit the nail on the head, "cinematic" is the perfect adjective for this song. You can to into this knowing nothing about the actual movie and still feel a compelling story unfolding.
"All I want is some peace of mind with a little love I'm tryin to find" so I was only 11 when this came out, my older sisters played this album non stop because they loved it and that pissed off my parents. They had their own lethal stuff going on with a real messy divorce just down the road a ways. a very mixed up time in my young life, but the one thing that made sense was these lyrics. i wanted what Freddy wanted. didn't matter that he was on the corner and i was alone in my bedroom, locked away from the world. this might have been THE song that made me realize that listening to music can take you to a better place. i've been escaping ever since. thanks for bringing it back guys.
Man, what a dirty & heavy bass groove! Brings back memories of listening to this on 8-track in my uncle Melvin's '72 Cadillac Coupe de Ville as an 8-year-old singing along with the song! Great reaction as usual La & Che! Be well!!!
An absolute genius - Where did all the music go? The talent of this man is so underrated, and his impact of funk/soul/R&B is as vital as anyone who ever existed. It was a masterpiece every time he went into the studio. Curtis understood that music is a great uniter. The incredible force that people who differ on everything and anything else can have in common and come together. RIP Mr. Mayfield, thank you, and Big Soul Airplay Beats, for bringing his music forgotten in time back to those who loved it.
More Curtis! Awesome musicians, instrumental and production. And then his voice - literally and symbolically. Love his music - adore his message. He, Marvin lead other artists to speak their truths
reddie's Dead was released by Curtis in 1972. Fishbone released a cover of it in 1988 which I think it excellent, but it's been covered and released by around 18 other artist.
Wooo I still love this song the whole album. The 70s was so much fun and we had the best songs. Of course we did have the blaxplotion movies. But this song went with the movie. Curtis Mayfield was 🔥
Love this album and all the music on it, but this tune stands out. Such exceptional talent, a great message on a song that just stays in your head. I always learn something from your reactions, which is why I look for them daily, and this one is no exception! You guys have the ear and knowledge for sure! Thank again! Cheers!
Thanks guys for reacting to more of this fabulous album packed with powerful messages. So many great songs on it. One of my favorite is the instrumental "Think", so chill. Appreciate your reaction and comments as always🍂
Major props to whomever made this happen on Patreon. Another landmark early 70's album Sly &;Family- There's A Riot Going On ( 71) A year before Superfly !!
Stunningly beautiful. Those strings.......I think the first time I heard them was on Ode to Billy Joe, but then around '72, Elvis and Lou Reed were using them effectively. The tension.
It's almost as if Lenny Kravitz just lifted Mayfield's whole thing. Both great in their own right, but there's no denying Mayfield's influence on Lenny. Great stuff. Like others have already said, the Fishbone cover is definitely worthy of its own reaction.
Fantastic song~Curtis' voice is ethereal, the instrumentation perfect and the message timeless. Good job guys! Have you heard "Across 110th Street" by Bobby Womack? Equally wonderful song. 👍
Such a great song. You should give a listen to the Fishbone cover of this song from their Truth and Soul album from 1988. They are an amazing but often overlooked band. ❤
'Freddy' O'D'd on 'junk'...The repeated & extended single note on the violin represents Freddy's flatline on his heart monitor after his final quick 'slam' of the plunger on his syringe.
If you haven't yet, check out some Gil Scott-Heron. Like Curtis Mayfield, his music was very socially conscious. Check out "Pieces Of A Man", "Home Is Where The Hatred Is", "Lady Day And John Coltrane" and most famously "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised".
What about that beautiful string harp in parts. Freddies Dead one of my favorite R&B songs from the 1970's and as a 15 year old(1974) white kid Rocker i was always listening to R&B.
(A late comment.) Best movie soundtrack of all time! Not even Purple Rain tops this soundtrack! And the song Freddy's Dead is one of the most ignored and funkiest tracks ever made! Good reaction! ✌️😎
Honestly I think a lot of people can relate to this song to an extent. "Everybody's misued him, ripped him off, and abused him" How being hurt by the people who claimed to love you can make you cynical. Build a wall around your emotions Also while the movie was glorifying the lifestyle. Mayfield wrote songs that condemned it. He used the music to be an angel on the devil's shoulder.
I think you said you are doing the whole album? Good. Every song is good. 2 instrumental fillers. But those are good! That's why you do the whole album. My favorite's are "Eddie..." and "Gimme your love"

70's soul and funk sends me
Yesssssss. Used to get so many weird looks in the early 2000s listening to Mayfield in high school. People just didn't get it.
If you haven’t already, Pusherman is an outstanding song.
Got the Philadelphia sound with the strings.
True Indeed!
I remember an episode of “Sanford & Son” where Fred’s in the hospital for some procedure and this starts playing on his bedside radio.
jaja. I was just watching that episode the other day
Those lyrics were written in the early 1970’s. It’s 2023 and they hit just as hard!!
Sad...but so TRUE!! Heard this + it rings true "times change but things dont" SMH.✌🏼
Glad you did Curtis. His song "If there's a Hell Below, We're all Going to Go" is still my favorite. Rock on, Airplay.
Fishbone introduced me to Curtis Mayfield with a cover of the song in the early 90s. I still thank them to this day!
Truth! Same here.
This was a Banger in Detroit when it came out, All over the Air Waves !!!
Love this song and the cover by Fishbone
Every Og in the neighborhood blared this out the car back in day 😂
Curtis Mayfield, We People Who are Darker than Blue. A masterpiece!
Curtis- another american treasure- the greatest falsetto & coolest music -- cant do better than Curtis- move on up !
The sound of the 70’s. 💙
Excellent song. Curtis voice, great Groove. Definitely 70s. Excellent reaction fellas. Appreciate you 🙏 ❤
I got lost in that groove.
Curtis, the arranger, was genius level. This arrangement is more complex than the end result sounds.
You guys hit the nail on the head, "cinematic" is the perfect adjective for this song. You can to into this knowing nothing about the actual movie and still feel a compelling story unfolding.
This whole album was Super Fly. 🎶👍
I was in 8th grade when this came out. The radio played the shit out of this.

Great memory brother! Peace!
Love it!❤ huge part of my childhood! This totally transports me to a very special time in my life!
For sure!
Loved this song back in my day! Funky
FISHBONE did a kick butt version of this.
Fact
Loved this song since it came out, still on my playlist. It's epic.
My absolute favorite from Curtis
Isaac Hayes credited Curtis as one of his major inspirations.

Masterpiece! The movie hits hard with the 70's vibe!

Friday Friday Friday.... I'm in Deebo's pigeon coop sweating like a slave.

Pure Genius. A true musical Giant
Bass player: Joseph "Lucky" Scott.
A Bad Man!

Great stuffs guys Curtis is a legend.
I remember the first time I heard this in my 20s and I was just like 😮😮 does not get enough love. Curtis was a genius.
More funky goodness from this banger of a soundtrack
Thanks guys for reacting to more of this fabulous album packed with powerful messages. So many great songs on it. One of my favorite is the instrumental "Think", so chill. Appreciate your reaction and comments as always🍂
I still listen to this song...Love it!
Thank you for reacting to the whole album! I've heard some of these but am getting to hear some new songs, as well.
Yeah we played the heck out of this in the 70's. Good times!😂
Love this one!! One of my favorites.
Major props to whomever made this happen on Patreon.
Another landmark early 70's album
Sly &;Family- There's A Riot Going On ( 71)
A year before Superfly !!
I wore both those albums out… maybe I wasn’t such a dumbass in my adolescence
WOW, Those claps were used brilliantly and for you to pick those was a nice treat, thanks for sharing
That part where they break it down to just the rhythm section and strings…. And the claps of course too
whoa, you guys got the best playlist of all the reaction channels. Curtis FD, what a monster of a song ... best of the best
Genius arrangement on that gem!
Amazing album 🤩. Amazing artist 😍.
Curtis Mayfield was so ahead of his time, this whole album is amazing, to many of our musical geniuses left to soon
This was an instant volume turner upper on my VW Beetle’s tinny little radio.
That whole album is a masterpiece… 70s music with different genres was the best😊
Stunningly beautiful. Those strings.......I think the first time I heard them was on Ode to Billy Joe, but then around '72, Elvis and Lou Reed were using them effectively. The tension.
Rest In Peace to one of the true Rock Geniuses. Terrible what happened to him at Wingate Field so many years ago.
It's almost as if Lenny Kravitz just lifted Mayfield's whole thing. Both great in their own right, but there's no denying Mayfield's influence on Lenny. Great stuff. Like others have already said, the Fishbone cover is definitely worthy of its own reaction.
Takes me back to driving around LA on a hot smoggy summer day. Radio would be playin' the shit out of this
Classic album to react too!!!! Little Child running wild I think is my fav.
Fantastic song~Curtis' voice is ethereal, the instrumentation perfect and the message timeless. Good job guys! Have you heard "Across 110th Street" by Bobby Womack? Equally wonderful song. 👍
Yea. I love that song. Might be time to review it. I haven’t heard it in a while.
That song was packed! Lol!
Excellent reaction 👏👏
Very harsh lyrics but so very meaningful...the music, well, that's top notch funky-soul. Incredible arrangements and production. Curtis was a genius!
Unbelievable engineering vocal on point bongos from heaven and that scratch guitar and maybe lyrics as deep as the Marianas. Trench. Thanks guys.
A masterpiece
Those Bongos were played by Master Henry Gibson
Really enjoyed this! Don’t think I’ve heard this since the seventies 😊
I didn't realize back then how many great songs had flute in them. I always just associated flute with Jethro Tull.
Favorite soundtrack
Loved Curtis! 😄
Check out " Check out your mind" by Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions that is a bad ass jam.
Check out some Gil-Scott Heron.
What's the word??😂
The Revolution Will Not Be Televised...
I requested Pieces of a Man.
My favorite 😮
I would say that was one of the most memorable bass lines of 70s..
The title track ":Superfly" is numero Uno !
After Curtis Sly&;Family Stone - There A Riot Going On ( 71)
More BANJO! LOL cheers and another great Reaction!
That song just sucks you in. Chitown, my man!
Curtis is king!
Fishbone did an excellent cover of this song
Oh, yeah..you gonna make your fortune by and by...
Fishbone did a great cover of this
You beat me to it. Great minds think alike. 😎
Curtis made a point to create a positive movie score cuz he knew the movie wasn't all that positive.
Such a great song. You should give a listen to the Fishbone cover of this song from their Truth and Soul album from 1988. They are an amazing but often overlooked band. ❤
Great tune!
Got to do [.............Don't Worry] If There Is a Hell Below, We're All Going to Go or Move on Up (Extended Version).....Kung Fu
Had to buy this album with my hard-earned babysitting money, oh to be 15 in 1972

A classic I cant believe it freddy's dead and so is todays music. It's a damn shame
What about that beautiful string harp in parts.
Freddies Dead one of my favorite R&B songs from the 1970's and as a 15 year old(1974) white kid Rocker i was always listening to R&B.
Wish they could make music like this nowadays, instead they make songs with no soul.
Profit has taken over everything in our society.
❤
Papa Was A Rolling Stone might have the most recognizable bass line.
Or For The Love of Money by the O'Jays?
We may know some “Freddie’s” in our life😢
(A late comment.)
Best movie soundtrack of all time! Not even Purple Rain tops this soundtrack!
And the song Freddy's Dead is one of the most ignored and funkiest tracks ever made!
Good reaction! ✌️😎

I'd love to see you two reaction to the great album "Back to the World". The title track is brilliant, but don't overlook Right on for the Darkness.
