I remember my classes grade 4-graduation getting graded our ability to take our notes in this style. Our grades would be impacted on our ability to stick to this structure rather than actually retaining the information. For me personally, it was messy, difficult to understand and didn’t help at all. We had to turn in our note books to be graded on them, and that was when I just gave up and went back to what worked for me.

Hi. I'm an ESL teacher and I love your point of view. What other note-taking methods could you recommend?

I find the final sentence here odd-I thought much of the point of Cornell notes was to do the note-taking in class and then write the questions & summary that evening, to interrupt Ebbinghaus’ forgetting curve.

Your not necessarily “forced “u have the option to tweek it . U can always summarize in different ways off the top of your head or written and also go back and make other connections .

Sure, but the way around this is…. Don’t take notes at all during the lecture or reading session.
If you’re attending a lecture…. Record it / Capture it on your phone, so you can go back later and summarize based on the recording playback. But, during the lecture itself, your job is to watch…. listen…. think…. process…. and, if you’re so inclined, engage with the content by raising your hand and asking questions.
If you’re simply reading a chapter in a book, then it’s the same thing here, only difference is, all of the information has already been “recorded / captured” onto the page for you. All you need to do is, read through the chapter the first time without taking any notes at all. Concentrate fully and earnestly on the material during the first read…. brainstorm and troubleshoot the ideas in your head as you take in the information…. ask yourself questions…. compare and contrast the concepts to other relevant scenarios in your life experience…. etc. Then, read through the chapter a second time, and THAT’S where you focus on summarizing the information into the Cornell template.
Cornell note-taking definitely involves more time and energy over conventional note-taking, but then again, so does the process of learning anything new, in the first place! So, if you’ve already committed the time to being there to learn something new, why not go the extra step and apply the Cornell technique properly to ENSURE you remember the material later?

I simply use Google Docs for my notes. Although I don't divide my page into sections, my method is similar to the Cornell method. For my method, I write my notes as usual: mostly outlining, but sometimes paragraphs. Then, for my cue section, I use the comments function. I can highlight passages or points within my notes, summarizing or asking questions. I can then use my commented summaries or questions on my notes to create flashcards.
