    I ran that shovel for 18 years 8 to 10 hours a day 6 days a week. Theres nothing on it I haven't worked on. I miss running the old girl. It was truly a experience. Since we got the excavator things are easier but you had to know what you where doing to operate that old shovel.

    Glad to see the old girl running and digging just as it should. Also glad to see Willie chug past on the 2U.

    Truly a beautiful sight to see, especially in the hands of a man who knows. Thanks for taking the time to film.

    If going to the shows watch the dates post Ed. I found an error in the fliers but haven’t fully checked all the dates.

    I've been thinking about this show the few days. May try to take something during the spring show. It's been a while since I participated.

    nice machine . a question if i may,,, when was the transition from steam to deisel and from cable to hydrolics . thanks . i know that some latter machines are electric powered .

    • @SteamCrane

      The engine progression was in 2 stages, from steam to gas, and from gas to diesel. Steam to gas was in the 1920's, gas to diesel was much later, 1940's-1950's, and spread over time. For a long time, you could order either gas or diesel, with obvious price differences.
      Steam hung on in liftcrane service, as you could inch a steam engine, with power lowering, but not a gas or diesel machine with on/off clutches. That changed with Manitowoc's Vicon torque converter drive, that let you inch the load with full power.
      Cable to hydraulics was much later, in the 1960's.
      Electrics in large mining machines happened early in the 1900's. The Ward Leonard variable speed DC drive was invented in 1891.
      There were no hard cutoffs, large steam derricks were active on the Great Lakes until the early 1980's. Several of those were then converted to diesel, using the original draw works, and still active.

    Man we worked that thing to death. I'm glad to see it working. Even if it's with loose dirt and not Shale.

    What's up with all the Wiggle on the house after he picks up the boom? P.s Quite a Skilled Operator we have here Quick at the controls!

      The hook rollers can be adjusted to take up the free play, but it depends on whether any adjustment is left on them. This machine has other higher priority issues to resolve.
      Most machines that end up in collectors' hands were available because they were pretty much worn out. Often takes a lot of time + money to just get them up to operable.

    What is the yard size of the bucket?7

    • @Caje-zf8md
      @Caje-zf8md 4 года назад

      I've seen ads listing the 180-D as a 4.5-yard shovel whiles others at the show said it was a 5-yard bucket. There's a Manitowoc stripping shovel at this show that's almost as big.

    Too much ballast

    • @SteamCrane
      @SteamCrane  3 года назад

      Worn hook rollers. Northwests were meant to be rock shovels, some extra ballast would have been helpful.
      Just about every retired machine that collectors get is pretty much worn out.

      @@SteamCrane oh
      It looked like it was tilted backward and had too much stress
      I think the motors need to be worked on and the winches because it looked like it was slipping or it wasn’t getting enough torque to scoop
