  • In today's video we show How to support wedding cake tiers for tall or heavy cakes!
We prefer to support super tall cakes using a wooden bottom board, floor flange and a pvc pole.
We also talk a bit about supports in styrofoam and modifying the single plate system of supports for this method.
We use pvc on any of our cakes taller than 5 tiers or 20 inches.

Great explanation. I'm not making a cake that large but it's a topsy turvy style so the thicker center pipe is very helpful.

The upside down chandelier cake stands are a specialty item. They're sometimes also called a cake swing.

💕It is a heated wire styrofoam cutter. Here is what I used to cut my styrofoam! www.amazon.com/FloraCraft-Styrofoam-Cutting-Electric-StyroCutter/dp/B003ADDTG6/ref=sr_1_4?crid=2OG9DIS7COK49&keywords=styro%2Bcutter&qid=1654545971&sprefix=styro%2Bcu%2Caps%2C117&sr=8-4&th=1

Thank you for this video! I do have two questions
•Do you make a 1 inch hole in each cake tier prior to stacking or will cake be pushed out as it’s placed?
•the plate system do you use this only for the styrofoam or the entire cake? Or can I use my foam core boards in between? Rather than.

Hi Kim! I "core" the center of the cake before placing it over the center pvc. This helps prevent the cake from pushing up and possibly breaking/cracking the layers or messing up the design. I use Wilton's Hidden Columns for this. It's a sturdy plastic column, slightly larger than the pvc center pole. I measure the cake to it's center, push the hidden column into the cake down ward, and then pull it back out. It cleanly pulls the cake core out without damaging my tiers. Here's a link to that column: artisincakes.com/products/wilton-hidden-pillars-6-inch-long-4-pack-for-interior-cake-support .
Yes, you can use your foam core boards between, but cut the center hole out of them to allow the pvc to pass through. Great questions!
