  • Kyoto Animation is known for historic and classic anime like Clannad, Violet Evergarden, Hibike!, Nichijou, Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai, and so many more. In the anime industry they're known for being one of the best places to work if you're an animator. You don't have to deal with Production Problems / Issues or being overworked.

RIP Yasuhiro Takemoto, director of Clannad, Dragon Maid S1, Hyouka, Lucky Star, Amagi Brilliant Park, FullMetal Panic, and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, as well as storyboarder and episode director for K-ON, Nichijou, Hibike Euphonium 1-2 and the movie, Clannad, Clannad: After Story, Air, Beyond the Boundary, and Violet Evergarden. He was even the episode director for episode 24 of Clannad: After Story. Yes, THAT legendary episode.

Seeing Naoko Yamada, the heart and soul of KyoAni ever since Clannad: After Story leave the studio after the attack for Science Saru was just a 2nd punch to the gut. Yamada-sensei is the icon of KyoAni. She's the one who made KyoAni what it is today. Every single one of KyoAni's big hits has her touch on it. She even directed K-ON, Tamako Market, the first two seasons of Hibike Euphonium, A Silent Voice, Violet Evergarden, and Liz in the Blue Bird. So her not being there anymore is surreal. KyoAni will never be the same again without her.

Rest in peace to all the victims of this horrible tragedy. I can’t believe 5 years passed already. They truly gave us the best gift possible. They created and shared something with us that so many people can continue to view, love, and reflect on until the end of time. They left a beautiful imprint on the world and this community. I really hope they are at peace in a good place ❤️.

I remember on the year anniversary watching the update videos of Kyoani beginning to rebuild. And I also remember the announcement of dragon maid returning and crying again. Kyoto Animation will always be my favorite animation studio. Not because they are the most famous. Not because of the number of series they made. They will always be my favorite because they have made multiple anime that have resonated with me on a deep emotional level. From the love of family in Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid to the idiosyncratic craziness of Love Chunibyo and Other Delusions to the loss and personal growth of Violet Evergarden, their series always seek to tell important stories of personal growth and were made by people who truly loved what they created. They treated their employees like family and gave them great working conditions compared to the vast majority of the industry. May the victims rest in peace and may God comfort those who lost loved ones.

The fire died and left sorrow for the living. Such sorrow may entice us to forget and leave it all behind.
Yet, despite the passing of time, the memory will not fade. Not in the face of the fine art produced by the souls we lost that day. If there is something to be grateful for, it is that those artists shone bright and strong before they went away.
Thank you, Kyoto Animation! Thank you for your many gifts! For enriching all our lives, and giving them a chance to give!
