My favorite change to the PSX version is by far the much creepier background music for all the levels. Mt Erebus is especially disturbing as the soundtrack includes babies crying in the background. Creeped the heck out of me the first time I played it.
Aubrey Hodges is the creator of the soundtrack for the PSX port. You can buy the whole album he made for $17. Worth every penny if you ask me, he needs more credit. He didn't get much, and barely anyone knows who he is despite how popular this game is/was.
I love how the shotgun zombie seems to fly quite high into the air because of your shotgun blast : 1:23. Very much enjoying watching this series of video. Thanks. :)
Yeah, I remember this map on the GBA. While it still was fun. it just felt so incomplete. Although, the new area with the yellow door is cool, I think. You were right about the openness being gone here. You wouldn't even expect that wall to be there right behind you at the beginning.
I recommend you to set in GZDooms options the "adjust sprite clipping" option to always. This prevents corpses looks like being into the floor, instead of lying onto the floor.
With all the changes to all these maps from the PC version, it almost seems that Williams was trying to get id to kind of create a totally new game out of Doom this time around.
The numerous large monster patches and some of the connectivity that allowed you to get sniped a bit easier are gone and so there really isn't much of an element of surprise left
The PSX version feels FAR more Hellish in every way. Sure some of the levels are cut, but the graphics and music and sounds are so much better and creepier. The original isn't creepy at all and has naff music.
I've played the Playstation version so many times as opposed to the PC and the SNES ports. I never even realized that Mt. Erebus on the Playstation was significantly cut down to what feels like 1/4 of the full map. Hell even the SNES port is larger. Maybe my point of view makes it feel a little smaller than 1/2 but still, it's too easy from the PC and SNES port.
Yeah, it's definitely easier. Odd that the SNES has a bigger map than the PSX version. That may also be attributed to the PSX version having a lot more going on with it as well. I never noticed the SNES version was bigger, lol
***** lol Yeah the SNES version is the closest thing to an almost perfect port minus, missing a few maps on all three episodes and obvious graphical differences lol. Plus on the Playstation version has better graphics than the SNES version, and that the PlayStation has higher frame rates. Love the play through! I always enjoyed the PS One, SNES and the PC versions of Doom!
Okay, 100% items isn't for every floor, I thought not. I guess Thy Flesh Consumed isn't in this version if it's the same as the GBA version I play on my phone. Yeah I see the changes in the map as well. Good job AltimaMantoid.
I don't strive for 100% items because it's just not something I care for. Because of the years of speedrunning and that there has never been a 100% items requirement in categories, I tend to use them if I need them =)
At least in your LP the map looks small, lonely and desolated. Completely different from the slaughter that the original PC version was. I always thought the PC version went a liiiiiiittle overboard in terms of overall size and monster population, but DAMN the Playstation version overcompensated badly.
_I always thought the PC version went a liiiiiiittle overboard in terms of overall size and monster population_ really? Then you really shouldnt play plutonia or some other wads :p
That's because I only JUST uploaded this. If you look, somewhere around 80% of my viewership watch my Doom videos and I have cleared 5k views on MANY videos. I also do things besides Doom videos. I do some horror games, other FPS games, old NES platformers, RPGs, and some pretty hardcore challenges.

I liked how that Cacodemon's lightning bolt killed the Spectre. :P
R.I.P. Captain Dickbag, now known as Captain Jiblets.
*Admiral. He was promoted.
Yeah. xD

+Yellowswift3 I never noticed that haha, glad you like the videos!

It's almost pointless to have two invulnerabilities since this version is so much easier.
I think it's for the PSX version being slower and harder to control.
It looks far more manageable in this version but you're right, the intimidation is completely gone.

This is much more hellish than the original. None of these stages look like Hell in reality. In the Doom games, gameplay trumps design.
Another change that might not be in this version is the blue key being in two places dependant on skill level
It does sorta still look like its volcano namesake, though. Like, built into the mouth supervillain style

They had to change some things but I think its still a cool map in this version.

Most of the Thy Flesh consumed levels are in the Playstation version.
I see.

Such as E4M1 on UV since there isn't even so much as a Stimpack (which gives more health than all the Health Bonuses in the Map combined).

Is that A_SHITTY?
This sounds like doom 64

I meant in comparison to the rest of the game. Of course, when you go to Plutonia or a slaughter wad it's par for the course.
dude u need to do more than just doom videos if you want a bigger audience, 17 views isnt much at all

***** hey Altima, did you ever get that hilarious DOOM video I sent you, showcasing the Multi-Barreled Automatic Super Shotgun???
DrQuagmire1 try some weapons of "russian overkill" like the pantokrator or the quadvolgue. Then you know what type of shotgun is a real shotgun ;D
De-M-oN well that recently released weapon titled the DoomStick for the "Rise of the Triad" looks pretty badass
