It's the fact that Lin's game is predicated on facing right-handers. He can position his feet to use his backhand to get the first attack in against right-handers and it's very effective. But, he has to adjust that against left-handers and he's not very effective at it still to this day in 2023. Then, when you mix that with the fact that Xu Xin is a penholder, and penholder's topspin shots are generally heavier, have sidespin on them, and that they kick and go forward, then immediately downward, unlike shakehands players, then you give Lin a long night at the table for sure.

Xu Xin is NIGHTMARE FOR ALL RISING YOUNG PRODIGIES. Let s remember, Harimoto can once win against any top world super stars. Lin Yun Ju can sometimes win against worlds top players too. But against Xu Xin, they have no chances, they always lose and repeatedly lose more clearly.
The main reason is that Xu Xin is the player, who play most logical intelligent table tennis style now in the world. Any his hittings are very confident and balanced between accuracy and speed. You can see that, Xu Xin does not so much often earn points from uncleared cases by extreme powered fast balls. But Xu Xin gradually get advantages by combining spin+positional ball placement+athletic challenging, then he forces opponents to make errors. So the secret is that his statistical percent of fair balls is very high. The most same player is Timo Boll. Other players can sometimes make devastating fast balls from uncleared cases, but total statistical percent of fair balls is not high. It is not science, but it is stupid.
Xu Xin is the representative of very specific chinese invention too, penholder backhand reversed side style. The success of Xu Xin proves that China really can invent effective new style in table tennis world. Otherwise, China just shows that they can well copy world styles but can not invent new own.

It's all about styles, Xu Xin's spinny topspin is a good counter to Harimoto and Lin's close to the table style. You can have someone who can beat Xu Xin easily but lose to Harimoto it's nothing new that's how this sport works, can't have someone who is unbeatable who counters all style even Ma Long has weaknesses

It obvious what one of LIN YUN ju's weakness is. It's the high arc, high spin loop. he missed a couple of those from Jang Wujin as well. Perhaps he was unfamiliar with the way the T2 ball behaves in that type of shot.
Zing Sting he was not in form, remember he won the Kuala Lumpur T2 final beating FZD?
Yes, I remember he also beat Ma long too so he is capable of beating some of the worlds best but as far as I can tell, he has never beaten Xu Xin for the couple of times they've played. Logically there must be something in Xu Xin's style that he has a hard time handling. Analyze how he lost his points. Of course there were balls that were too fast and those he could not get to but there are those spinny high ones that he could get to but either misses or puts out of the table. I'll bet you that's what his coach is going to get him to work on.

That is exactly what I want to point out. Footwork. The screamer is slightly better than Lin with his footwork though. If Lin does not cover his forehand better, requires footwork, he will go nowhere.

Given time Lin Yun-Ju is a very promising player. This is just a small setback for him. This was not typical Lin. I guess he is not used to the role of defending champion yet.
