It's interesting that some take offense to being asked 'where are you really from?' / 'what is your racial background'. I like being asked this question, as it shows the person is at least 'somewhat' interested in me as an individual. I like asking this question when I see people from mixed racial backgrounds, as I find them to be very good looking / beautiful. I'm from a small island, so I find this interesting.

+Alex B. Hey Alex, if you are born and brought up in that country (like the US or Canada) and you are asked "where are you really from" I'd understand if the person got offended depending on who asked that. Racial background isn't an offensive question at all but a bit personal for some people and a stranger asking them that can be really rude.

    • @BassBwoy3
      @BassBwoy3 8 лет назад

+countroshculla - True. I guess if a stranger said 'Where are you 'really' from?', it would sound a bit brash, unless they meant it in a humorous way. If it was said 'super seriously' then I would probably take offense to it.

I think people don't want to be put in a box or group of people, they just want to be considered Canadian. For exemple, my friend was born in Canada as well as her mother and father....but one of her grandmother in black. She knows nothing about her Grandmother's country, but she is always asked where she is from,....When she says she's from Canada, people ask "then why are you black", she answer her Grandmother is Jamaican....then people instantly consider her "Jamaican" and asume she knows about it....but her culture and the way she was raised has nothing to do with Jamaica, she considers herself Canandian,
Some people just get tired of that and get mad when they are asked "Where are you really from"

  • @willcamick

Right off the Bat Id like to say that Yes Canadians will ask you where your from. This is not to be mean or Annoying. They do this to try and better relate to you. Canadian's love to learn about other coulters so don't take it the wrong way when they ask you 100 things about where you are from. Most Canadians are vary friendly and will go out of there way to not offend you. This is vary important to remember because Canadians pride them selves on how open minded they are and to say that they are not is devastating to them. So if they do say something offensive know its not because they are trying to hurt your feelings, They simply might not know better and telling them that they offended you can be a bit tricky. As a foreigner, Canadians will walk on egg shells around you. So try your best not to be shy. Being an open book will help you make friends in Canada.

    Hey Orchidsnlime,
Just want to thank you for your video and your information. As a person thinking about moving to Canada, I think you have covered most of the important things, and I really enjoyed your video.
RUclips seems to be quite a different community in terms of respecting people. I don't understand why somebody would behave like that, but I agree with you, that we just have to stay away from those negative people.
    Thank you again.

  • @chapachuu

In my experience, "where are you from" is like "how are you" in Canada, especially in Northern Canada where smaller communities are the norm (small being under 15 000 people). I'm a white Canadian and I have had people ask "where are you from" when I'm in a different town. That or "do you live here or are you visiting?". In most cases, this question has nothing to do with how you look. People are just curious if they've never seen you before or if you look like a tourist or like your just passing through.
That said, there are definitely rude, a-holes in Canada, just like any other country in this world.
PS All cities in Canada are multi-cultural, so don't worry about that. You will find others from your culture or native country no matter where you go (unless it's a small town, and even then there's a bit of diversity).

+chapachuu That can be true in large cities too. I once had two young gentlemen enquire as to why I hadn't asked that question. My response was that it had nothing to do with what we were doing, and neither one had a strong accent.

For the section on racism, when you said that people may ask you where you're "really" from - I'm not sure you could totally take this under the category of racism. I'm a white Canadian citizen and people ask me that question all of the time as well - I think it stems more so from the fact that most Canadians are not indigenous, and people are trying to figure out your ancestry prior to arriving in Canada...I guess it would be interpreted differently based on personal experience, but that's just my two cents

I think this was mostly sound advice. I would add that Sudbury, Ontario is probably one of Canada's mining capitols (Google it).
Toronto and Hamilton Ontario have a HUGE art scene. Toronto has the Toronto International Film Festival which is the second largest of its kind next to Cannes France. If you are a musician like myself, Hamilton or Toronto are the places to be. 3 of the World's biggest stars are from the Toronto area (Drake, Justin Bieber, The Weeknd). However, MANY musicians and producers choose Hamilton as it is close to Toronto and has much cheaper rent. For Film & Theatre either Toronto or Vancouver. For corporate as she said Toronto. Do not rule out Ottawa either.
If you are moving from Europe to Toronto or any place in Southern Ontario the biggest difference you will notice is the amount of sunlight as we get an unreal amount of sunny days as compared to most of Europe and also the summers are usually extremely hot and humid. Temps often topping 34C and nearing 40c with humidity. Vancouver and Victoria British Columbia have more Euro-like climates but even there they do have much less rain than London or Amsterdam, especially in the summer.
winters will generally be colder than most places in Europe.

Oh, I see... You checked with the "respectable source". Justin Bieber is a Billboard start, no doubt about that LOL, but it's kinda 15-year girls' favorite. So, you may actually create a real bad name for Toronto :) How aboot you realize that there's life out there? Or at least mention Rush or some other serious band?

Hi OrchidsNlime, I am from back east USA and I relocated myself to Vancouver BC in 2009. Like the US, I find there is an east coast vs west coast kinda vibe here in Canada. I spent many years visiting Toronto as it was my first and only choice for a while for a possible Canadian move. However, when I visited Vancouver for the very first time in 2008 I just fell for the weather, the people and the whole ambiance of the city. I then felt that if I moved to Toronto it would sort of still place me in the hustle of a city very similar to where I grew up so the Vancouver vibe was refreshing for me.
I did like what you had to say as I always felt that there is really no such things as the perfect or best place to live as it is more like what an individual finds perfect for them.
LANGUAGES - having visited Toronto for many year you are of course about English and French. In Vancouver (perhaps BC in general) it is English and Cantonese. Vancouver having one of, if not the most concentration of Asian people in North America. I'm not sure if I've ever seen a sign in French here, but I have seen many signs in an Asian language.
JOBS - I'm in IT and living here ....well it's not easy. The weather here is great. You are spot on about snow being mainly up in the mountains. For the six years I've been here I think I've only seen little notable snow on the ground in the city of Vancouver and I'm fine with that. :)
Anyway, that's just my two cents worth of comments. Cheers!

Don't worry when we ask you where you are really from. Canadians hold on to their heritage, love the places they came from originally and maintain their original cultures in many ways. It is very Canadian to be proud of where 'you are really from. See, my family has lived in Newfoundland since the late 1700's,,,,,but we are really from Ireland......:D To be Candaian is to be allowed to be who and what you are and we are curious about you and your past history and your ancestors and what goodies may be hiding in your kitchen that we haven't tasted yet. When people ask where are you really from, that is acceptance, That is Canadian. Geez, this seems so important that I keep editing......I want you to hear me.....lol.....OK....I got it boiled down to a simple truth......when we ask you where you are from, we are asking you where you are from, not asking you where you belong. You belong in Canada, with the rest of us. Here, first and foremost, we are all Canadian, painted with the same brush. After that, we are all immigrants. And we like it. Top a da marnin to ya, AND God Bless You my sister.

So nice to hear good things about Canada. Before you born and 1967, my family attended Expo 67. We experienced no racial prejudice and were permitted to go everywhere and, while taking public transportation (bus and subway), people were very sincere. The part of Canada that I like and saw on you tube was New Brunswick, Canada (east coast). I do remember when Canada was a part of the U.S. but that was quite a long time ago. Also, how is Canada towards older people? What I've seen of Canada (Quebec & Montreal as well as Toronto in the distance) is beautiful.

Hi! I live in Québec and I have to say that there is a lot of people in Québec who don't speak english at all or only a little, the only city in Québec where you can live only in english is Montréal and if you do only speak english you will miss the best part of Québec. If you do want to live in Québec or just visit I think it is important to speak at least a little french to be respectful and people will be more friendly if you say Bonjour first instead of Hi. For a very europeen experience in Canada I recommend Québec city, it is smaller than montréal, but very historical and there is less english so you do feel on vacation (the majority of young people do speak english as a second language though so no problem for communication) Thanks for your videos!

Eisenheim Caracal I am a English only speaking Canadian, and I worked in Quebec City for 9 months. I have to say before going there I was timid of the idea of living there without being able to speak french, I had travel an spent some time in Montreal prior to this and they treated English speaking people very badly there. So when I went to Quebec City an found the people to amazingly friendly and went out of there way to try an speak English to me I was truly shocked. I cannot say enough good thing about the people there, they made my time there very enjoyable.

Greg Ward I'm happy you had a great time in Québec city, I never lived in Montréal, but if some french speaking people were mean to you for no reason I'm sorry they are idiots. haha Maybe since montréal is less and less francophone, they feel more threatened than the people in Québec city, it might be the reason why they seemed mean. anyways I'm happy you had a great time while working here!

    • @sophier1456
      @sophier1456 9 лет назад

Yes canadian french might be hard to understand especially if you are in smaller towns, but often if we know the other person is not used to the language we can change the accent a bit to use more international french it's not that hard and in big cities like Montréal or Québec the accent is easier to understand. Having said that, the difference between french in France (in Paris mostly because the accent is different in all parts of france) is not only the accent it's expressions, we don't necessarly use the same and it can be confusing. We understand french from europe really well so understanding you wouldn't be a proplem, it's more that the french from france have difficulty understanding us. Last but not least, the accent we have in Canada is yes influenced by english but also ressemble more the old french because when we were cut of from france in 1763 we had to preserved the language against english so we changed it less. I hope you will come to Québec one day, it's amazing and I don't think you will have any difficulty communicating we have a lot of french from france here and they understand us after a little time and concentration haha.

Just find the type of things you like to do with the type people you like and forget the weather and you will do fine. PS Alberta is not the mining center of Canada , BC , and the Yukon and Northwest territories are.

Being racist in Canada is the worst thing ever. If you ever want to make a Canadian upset then call them a racist or homophobic or sexist. Most Canadians will be vary nice to you if you are a foreigner but as soon as you take advantage of that they will stop talking to you. That is why I am planning to leave UK and settle in a country which genuinely welcomes multi-cultural society not pretending like UK. If you can please tell me..what is a basic budget per month with which a family or may be a couple can survive in Canada. I mean how much one should earn per month to live a decent life in Canada. What is the least salary one must earn to live with partner working and also with partner not working. And to have a Car and have at least one trip abroad per year to visit family. Whether renting or buying a house is best option and are houses affordable to buy with small salaries ? Please excuse me if I asked way too many questions.. but I will appreciate gratefully if you can share any information about them. Thanks again :-)

Mem, i dont think vancouver is good for outdoor activities because as we know it has majority of rainy days especially from oct to march.so what will one enjoy during rain ? Does one always wear raincoats while performing outdoor pleasurable activities.

From what I have found out, it's not easy to immigrate from the US to Canada. I am retired, and generally, some countries make it easy for retired people, but Canada is not one of them. Since the election here in the US, I would like to immigrate, but with all the hoops a person has to jump through, it seems practically impossible. If you have a different viewpoint, I would like to hear it. Thanks

Thank you for the video. Can you tell me as I am studying accounting and speak more fluent French than English and lived in Africa, where is the best place for me, Toronto or Montreal or another city? Personally I fear Toronto when I watch internet about it, kind of it is a busy place with expensive cost of life. About Montreal, the process of immigration is more complicated and by post. So I hope you will answer as you said because everyday I change my mind and I need to decide soon so that I can start the process of immigration. Thank you so so much.

    Hi @orchidsnlime
I'm planning to immigrate to Canada and your vlog was very useful. I'd like to take my mother along but I'm unsure what she's gonna do when I'll go to work everyday. She is working currently and having nothing to do in a new country would rather make things difficult for her to adjust. What are the prospects for retired parents (50-55 YO) in Canada? Any community service programs / NGOs / part time jobs she can join to pass her day? Looking forward to hearing from you :)

I suggest that you don't rely for information for exemples : Province of Quebec Population: 7,651,000
    Official language: French
Majority group: Francophone (78.1% native language, 80% speak French as a dominant language)
Minority groups: Allophone (12.3%), Anglophone (7.7%), Aboriginals (0.6%), 2 languages or more (2%)
Among the ten provinces of Canada, Quebec is the only one whose majority is francophone. Quebec's population accounts for 23.9% of the Canadian population, and Quebec's francophones account for at least 90% of all of Canada's French-speaking population.

I think that the question about where are you from has nothing to do with racism. I was born in Canada and I ask everyone that question. For example where were you born, where were you raised and what is your nationality. The majority of people here are just incredibly curious.
