This song IS genius and deep. LIKE ALL OF PETE'S MUSIC! Recent history, moods, have lost perspective. From an objective sense, Townshend is as much of a language genius of our age as Shakespeare was 400 years ago. Someday, eventually, history will know Townshend as one of the greatest English writers.
This song appeared on a 2006 album that is quite excellent, by anyone's standards. If you haven't heard it, listen. If you don't like it, that's your loss.
i was supposed to see them live last year in san antonio, but they cancelled and never rescheduled because of daltrey's bronchitis. i hope they tour again soon!
Pete Townshend wrote two of the greatest concept albums, if not the greatest, of all time: Tommy and Quadrophenia. He's also written tons of hit songs. And by the way, who's Gordon Lightfoot?
Hard to believe some of the comments on this site are from people who love music. They seem contrary to what music is all about. Do someone else's likes and dislikes affect your enjoyment of what you like? Does shitting on their opinion enhance it? Usually I just consider trolls beneath responding to. But to say either Pete Townshend or Gordon Lightfoot are not talented just floors me.
I have to disagree with you omeathkathy. This is the best Who album since Quadraphenia, (after this would be Who Are You). I agree that this should have been the first single.
@tyme4mike Gordon Lightfoot!!!!!!!!!! Surely you can't be serious comparing the accomplishments of Gordo to Pete Townshend. Not even close Townshends material is still relevent today and still influencing bands and song writers. And if Pete wants to play and write in his sixties he has earned it. It may be different but its still Townshend and well worth listening to. He has always had the balls to try new things with his music
@Jiggs46 Wouldn't matter if I was. Lightfoot is ten times the musician Townsend ever was or could ever hope to be. If musical ability was dynamite, Townsend wouldn't have enough to blow his fucking nose.
@tyme4mike lyrics involve a certain amount of interpretation by the listener. Your inability to make sense of them rests solely on you, not the writer. You have no context for the song, but more importantly you don't care to know what they mean because let's face it, you're most likely the type that mindlessly consumes music.
Out on the endless wire..out on the endless wire..out on the - you gotta be kidding me? He sings the same two or three lines fifty times with some lyrics that make absolutely no sense and he's supposed to be great? Endless Wire by Gordon Lightfoot..now THAT'S a great album by a GREAT singer and lyricist. Townsend sounds washed up and this is his effort at staying in a game that kicked him to the curb a decade ago. Time to hang up the guitar Pete. You owe nobody anything.

Im just glad I got to see him in the flesh, twice. Definently gave me my first spiritual moment.
There are two versions of this on the US release cd of Endless Wire

Anybody else got the new cd? It rules more than Hitler in Germany, 1939
Its a shame roger isnt thirty years younger, and thunderfingers and moonie arent around no more...then this would be one of the best ever.

ithink he meant a version like this with just pete playing acoustic. is that anywhere?
excuse me! this man can sing!
I think he consciously sang it the way he did on the studio album, but I do kind of prefer this one since he sounds a bit more energetic.

You don't know where you're talking about man
Someone should warn him about the dangers of jowl implants... Great song though!
