Truly think Pete Townshend was and is well ahead of his time ! Sounds are timeless and unique, guy is a genius and will always be a hero of mine, and many
So true he has a strong command of the instrument and the Gibson J200 can deliver. Never saw anyone use an acoustic so tastefully yet aggressively at the same time.
Bravo! Townshend will be discovered by a new generation! Timeless masterpieces he created. Quadrophenia my personal favorite. Solo albums spectacular - many spectacular classics.
What I love about this is that so many bands of their era had to have a rhythm and lead guitarist. He just does both at the same time. For that reason he's one of the best of all time.
What you say is true , but what is often overlooked is john entwhistles bass playing..Pete has said himself. John changed the way bass is played , he plays the bass like a lead guitar...a virtuoso really...but I agree with you too, Pete rocks
the way he builds up a climax without the power of the rest of the band and rogers rock scream (in my opinion the best ever) and still manages to do justice to such an awesome song is outstanding. one of my favourite guitarists from one of my favourite bands. you fucking legend.
Great performance by Pete of one of his very best songs. This is one of the great songs and Pete's strumming is world class here. Heartfelt singing and superb guitar playing.
This reminds me of why I have loved his playing so much for so many years! He is a very under rated guitarist - one of the great rhythm players around. Awesome stuff.
The Who Is THE Legend that defined the 80s. I remember when The Who gave their farewell tour. We all were gathered at Hurleys here in Ottawa watching it on satelite TV. What a memory!!!
I saw a youtube video of Pete playing and singing this one when he was younger, accompanied by John Williams on guitar, and I thought it was great! But this version is fantastic!! He was so good, I never thought he could improve with age, but this proves that anything's possible with Pete Townshend!
This guy is definitely one of my favorites and has had an influence on me. I wish they would come out with more songs. Of course no one can play like John.
They've been playing an acoustic version of "Won't Get Fooled Again" on SiriusXM Coffeehouse. This is a master class on how to ROCK an acoustic guitar!
I am SO with you on this... I'll try to keep this short. SRSly - Just after @1:36 you can see him Start to "jam out" & by 1:50ish he's So into it... Then the rest of the song he just "Goes for It" ... It's incredible. and a bit sad that Mr. Pete, at His age, needs to continue to carry this Torch which should have been passed almost 2 decades prior... Anyway, My God - What an INCREDIBLE Performance! He goes 'Uber' around 3:45ish... i Triple-dog-Dare modern 'rock' Artists to be as awesome as he's being in That Moment! :D
What a great song by a group who is timeless with both music and lyrics. My two year old loves the Who. I hope a band comes out with a fraction of their talent in her lifetime.
I have to agree. This is one of the greatest rock songs ever written. It was meant to be played at exactly this speed, not beat per minute faster or slower. Exactly at this speed. I rank The Who right behind the Beatles in Dylan in changing rock & roll. They invented punk, the rock opera, & heavy metal (you can hear it invented as they play the 15 minute version of My Generation on Live at Leeds.) Then they released Who's Next, surely one of Rocks classic albums, ranking with about four...
Pete Townsend really deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Hendrix, Page, Clapton etc, his influence is hugely underrated, as is the skill involved in his music. I'm yet to meet someone who can really strum pinball wizard properly, for example.
Frankly "Pipe" I believe him to excel all the others you mentioned, not as guitar virtuoso, but as the brilliant composer, lyricist, player and singer that he is! His voice is so distinctive that it never gets "old" and never gets misidentified, no matter what he sings!
Thanks for posting this. Awesome version. The Who was my first ever live concert in 69' at Chicago Auditorium. Pete's still blowing me away 40 years later.
A true magician! Always seeking perfection and this little acoustic solo is just about that. Lucky enough to have seen the Who 5 times at 4 different venues and there is no better live band!
1. He makes it look so easy! 2. I'm understanding the lyrics for the first time! They're incredible! 3. This man is the master! Nobody like PETE!!!! 4. Wow.
Very unique sound. This is a very tough piece to play. Lots of change up. Takes a very high skill level to play. Tougher than most may think. Great timing and rhythm. Switching between his chord progressions is genius. This guy doesn't get the credit he deserves as a guitar player. One of the most unique sounds in rock history.
Folks... Whether you like Pete or not,,, he is special. this video shows his finger picking, strumming, song writing and singing, all in one. In 2010 he is what's left from the old school. And remember... the new boss is the same as the OLD boss. GO Pete... YOU ARE god!!!
Dennis Smith No he never! You are talking crap! The police searched all his computers and searched his house and found nothing! Pete was 100% innocent! The who still sell out big Arenas so if Pete was a nonce, Thousands of people wouldn't be turning up to see him live every week would they?
Fresh perspective and a nuanced guitar vocal performance a rock folk music vibe akin to the vibraphone your voice as the instrument very soulful. Cheers Sir Peter and bandmates.
Absolutely magic...A true genious...And it makes me sick all around the world, the majority of tv&radio stations play crap...instead of giving people true music!
I get the sense that as Pete gets older he appreciates more and more the genious of his own compositions. God was sitting next to him when he wrote this one.
Townend ......energy passion and great writer .....he has given me many great moments , listening to his songs .....I like his voice ...he creates so he is entitled to sing
Big Respect and Thanks to a British Rock Legend...Your heyday was the '60's Pete and you the Stones and the Beatles remain to be the best us Brits ever produced, who can come close...Oasis?...Ok maybe them..#bestever.#wishiwasaliveinthe60's...
Apparetly foilfedora has no respect, cos did anyone else notice he satanically misspelled his surname, leaving out the 'h' between the 's' and the 'e'? And he won't correct the error.
He's really something special, because he also deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Dylan, McCartney, Lennon, Davies on the song writing end of things.
Simply put...Pete, You are the Man. Pete IS the Who...he could take anybody else on stage with him and it would still be the Who. Previous posts have said it, and I agree...they will be still commenting on this song in 200 years - a true classic.
I take your point - it is obviously very difficult to compare guitarists fairly across genres. What I essentially meant by that comment was that Pete is to rhythm guitar playing what those guys were to lead guitar, which is something I'll stand by :)
Pete Townshends ideas and music are timeless. Quadrophenia has been an album I have listened to since middleschool and I still enjoy pulling it out and listening through. He is propably one of the best songwriters I have come across (many modern day "artists" only make shit). This song has more meaning than the media likes to give it. The people who dislikes this video where fascist right-wings with a mind as opened as an airtight tanks.
He does almost everything that you can do with an acoustic guitar in this video. I think that near the end, I even heard him using the guitar's natural harmonics.
I find this man's rhythms and inventive playing an absolute inspiration. A true icon of my generation.
Me Too!!!
Pete Townsend's sound is outstanding and inspirational!
Well stated
hmmm. maybe he should write a song about your generation...
@@shannongagnon9069 TOWNSHEND! Duh!
Truly think Pete Townshend was and is well ahead of his time ! Sounds are timeless and unique, guy is a genius and will always be a hero of mine, and many
he was certainly ahead of his time when it came to downloading child porn from internet.
he did it before you could clearly be charged for it.
He get's so much melody out of those chords!
And what a great voice!
A sublime rendition
A great guitarist, one of the legends of rock for fifty years.respect pete!
This man will be mentioned 400 years from now !
I'm a huge fan of Pete Townshend on acoustic. No one plays it like he does.
same here - 10 years after your comment. Still there?
Flamenco.
Me too 🙂
So true he has a strong command of the instrument and the Gibson J200 can deliver. Never saw anyone use an acoustic so tastefully yet aggressively at the same time.

"Meet the new boss same as the old boss" One of my favorite lines in all of music.
you still breathing?
love your comment
I’m Going to see Pete and Roger live in Seattle October 2022!. Been a who fan for decades
This reminds me of why I have loved his playing so much for so many years! He is a very under rated guitarist - one of the great rhythm players around. Awesome stuff.
RS puts him at #10. He's in pretty good company.
Catching the Who in Ft. Worth during the 70's is still one of the highlights of my concert experiences. Long Live Rock!
its when he triple strums like 5 times in a row that gets me lol hes a legend and he always will be
Strumming and arpeggio superman! I'll tip my hat to the new constitution... Take a bow for Pete Townshend...
The Who Is THE Legend that defined the 80s. I remember when The Who gave their farewell tour. We all were gathered at Hurleys here in Ottawa watching it on satelite TV. What a memory!!!
Pete's rhythm blows me away every time I watch this! So much sound coming from not many chords! Legend!
Great song, great singer, great player and a beautiful guitar! What else do you want?
I can watch and listen over and over; pete has always been great but this is totally awesome!!!!!!!
I saw a youtube video of Pete playing and singing this one when he was younger, accompanied by John Williams on guitar, and I thought it was great! But this version is fantastic!! He was so good, I never thought he could improve with age, but this proves that anything's possible with Pete Townshend!
Wonderful rhythm guitar. Go Pete...
Along with Lennon, probably the two greatest rhythm guitar players...
That level of intensity and musianship is why this guy has been around for almost thirty years. Who can match that live and acoustic? Amazing.
What's impressive about Pete Townshend is that he's an artist who understands nuance and dynamics in the rock genre. A very rare thing.
This guy is definitely one of my favorites and has had an influence on me. I wish they would come out with more songs. Of course no one can play like John.

Pete Townshend was arguably the greatest song writer OF ALL TIME!!
A living genius , Mozart of the guitar ,iPete inspired me to learn to play guitar 46 years ago and i still bang this out to this day
What a great song by a group who is timeless with both music and lyrics. My two year old loves the Who. I hope a band comes out with a fraction of their talent in her lifetime.
Great song - made in the 70s, but still classic!
Great artist - grey and deaf, but still fresh!
Great music - handmade, but simply timeless!!
Nice guitar, Nice mics, great talent. Pete is a legend.

The RUclipsr spelled it wrong, and so did you. Every Who down in Whoville knows the correct spelling is TOWNSHEND. Never leave the 'h' out.

This was BRILLIANT then in the late 60's and is still brilliant to this day! IMVHO, always imitated but NEVER equaled!
A true magician! Always seeking perfection and this little acoustic solo is just about that. Lucky enough to have seen the Who 5 times at 4 different venues and there is no better live band!
One of the best songwriters and guitar player of ALL TIME
What blows me away is how young he was when he wrote these lyrics. Yeah, no one else can quite touch this stuff.
1. He makes it look so easy!
2. I'm understanding the lyrics for the first time! They're incredible!
3. This man is the master! Nobody like PETE!!!!
4. Wow.
Greatest 'english boy' ever, for me! Great on guitar, on vocals, and on passion for music. Love him.

What a great guitarist. One of the best.
Imagine going down the pub with Pete and he says lets go back to my place for a sing song. It would be the most awesome night of your life
Absolute genious with a guitar that man!!!
Man I'd love to spend a long afternoon jamming w/ him. He doesn't play the guitar; he owns it - he inhabits it . Awesome performance.

"Smiling green at the change all around"A change had to come....full of very quotable quotes that still apply to today and maybe even more so.
quality, love his voice, if he could send it a bit higher at the end of lines this would have me in tears, thansk so much for this
I tell thee, kids learning the guitar should be bound, gagged and made to watch this - a friggin masterclass!
Great video. Thanks for the post!
The most compelling guy to watch no matter what he sings and plays.
