- This is why you need to read emperor's soul. A quick review. Brandon Sanderson has written a lot of words into the Cosmere, but the best of those words can be found in The Emperor's Soul. Just after Elantris in the time line, this story is something that I think expands on the cognitive realm, and realmatics in the cosmere in general.

I recommend Emperor's soul even to people with no interest in the cosmere at large. The amount of quality discourse and respect for the different viewpoints crammed into a really short story is impressive on a technical aspect alone.

This is my absolute favorite Sanderson book, and that's saying something. I read it right AFTER Words of Radiance, and was completely blown away. I wish I had read it before Stormlight, because it does a phenomenal job of explaining the cognitive realm in simple terms. Also. You need more views. Great content, man.
Haha Thank you so much it really means a lot!! And yeah, I think when people want to claim he has prose that is too simple, or he can't write shorter fiction, this is a fabulous counter point. After having more time to reflect on it, I think it's certainly my favorite cosmere story I've read

I agree. This is some great stuff. I loved how the novel touches on our motivation as humans to try and control our surroundings and reveals that to actually gain a semblance of control in our lives we first need to understand the people in it.

Yes!! I really like Elantris, but it was his first published, so it certainly is his weakest just due to lack of experience. I think we were promised a sequel for Elantris and I'm really excited to see more experienced Brandon revisit that magic and characters because it was v interesting
If you haven't read The Emperor's Soul yet I'd make sure to go in with the right expectations after Elantris. The books have almost no connection other than being on the same world. All the one star reviews for Elantris bemoan that fact. But if you can accept it isn't a sequel and a stand alone novel then it's really a fantastic read.

This was the second cosmere book I read. Right after Alloy of Law. Alloy really hooked me with Wax and Wayne's abilities. But I actually liked Emperors Souls story more as a whole(for obvious reasons). And because I started with Alloy, when I went to TFE, the Allomancy seemed simple lol. It was Feruchemy tht kind of confused me, for some reason.
