Hey guys! 1 month of Cosmere 2020 down. Looking forward to Warbreaker in February. Feel free to join me!
i realize I'm pretty randomly asking but do anybody know of a good website to watch newly released movies online ?
@Maximilian Julian Flixportal =)
@Konnor Westley thank you, I went there and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :D Appreciate it !!
@Maximilian Julian glad I could help xD
Brandon won a Hugo award for The Emperor’s Soul.
Deservedly so.
Read the postscript for Hope of Elantris. It explains exactly why he wrote it. And Emperor's soul was so incredible! My favorite novella ever. The magic systems were amazing!
Yes, while I grumble about the magic system in Elantris, I loved the whole forging and essence marks of ES.
@@mikesbookreviews what’s funny though now that you mention them forging and essence marks in es even though I haven’t read it I did read Elantris and raodin tried that with the aon symbols forging them out of metal it might be a connection idk
I agree 100%! The Emperor's soul was am awesome read and was in my head for several days as well!
It's so well done and I think it being so short is what left us so hungry for more. I need more Shai in my life.
Yes. I loved The Emperor's Soul. I've read it twice, once as a standalone novella, and once again when I read Arcanum Unbounded. It ws fantastic and I'd also be up for more. If Brandon does write a sequel to Elantris, I hope he includes some of the Emporer's Soul stuff in that book, since it's the same planet. As for Hope of Elantris. I vaguely remember that I read it, but even your overview didn't spark any memories for me, so I guess it was a more forgettable story.
Would love to see more of this character in the future.
The intro and artworks for Emperor's Soul was fire my dude. That excerpt was so perfect too.
These words are accepted. 👍😀
When I read both of those passages I wrote them down. So good.
@@mikesbookreviews ....many of his philosophies and stories involve paths and steps and walking.
Love going back to these videos after I read these stories
Hoid Spoilers, Elantris spoilers:
After Hoid failed to become imbued with Elantrian magic when the great city was restored, Hoid returned years later as the court's "Royal Fool" and worked with Shai. Ever wonder how Shai got captured? Hoid did it. He made off with the Moon Scepter thanks to Shai's abilities. The Moon Scepter is a mcguffin to give Hoid some Selish investiture. Presumably Hoid has used it by the time we see him on Roshar in SLA.
Oh, btw, regarding Mistborn Era 2 and SLA. Chronologically, Era 2 (alloy of law) happens after SLA book 5's ending but before SLA book 6. There's a 10+ year time jump in there.
I looked this up after you mentioned he was in this book. Interesting to see if the Moon Scepter comes back into play somewhere else.
And now if you have read The Lost Metal and we see Moonlight (on a planet with no moon), we can see why she joined with Kelsier and wants to keep an eye on Hoid.
Shai will always be my vote on Brandon's best female protagonist. I mean, Shallan is a close second, but how it took me a 900-page tome to love Shallan, it only took me like the first 50 page of ES to love Shai.
I didn't love Shallan until Words of Radiance. Same with Jasnah. I liked Vin and Shai right away.
@@mikesbookreviews exactly! I've just started reading the Final Empire and I'm already starting to grow on Vin.
Great Content! This is one of my favorite Cosmere Books. I watched this video as part of my preparation for filming my own review! thanks for this inspiration!
Happy to help!
I'm born and raised in texas and I dont remember ever seeing a hardys. It's either whataburger or chicken express where I am at lol.
As far as the stories go I'm right there with you. Emperors soul was great. It had a very east asian feel to it where as elantris had a very European feel. I enjoyed both of them. It would be great to see those two stories meld with one another.
Extremely a Three Kingdoms feel for me. I would love to see a merging of those locations in future Elantris sequels. As for Hardee's, I have no idea what brought that out. I haven't even been there since I was like 8 years old and living in Atlanta. So weird.
@@mikesbookreviews I live in Vegas. We don't have Hardees. But we have the spin off, Carl's Jr. Still the same company. No idea why they use 2 different names.
Hope of Elantris was written after Elantris when Brandon and his wife Emily were just dating. It was her birthday present maybe?...something like that. After reading Elantris, I believe she inquired about the children off handedly. (She was a teacher) This story then resulted.
I did read that is where he got the name Matisse from. One of his daughter's classmates. Very cool.
Good work !! Will explain the chasm line later! Is very early here , gotta go to work.
Stupid work...
The magic of Elantrians rely on the shape of the land of their continent (forgot what it's called). It's basically a "connection to nature" kind of magic where you "write" around the geography of that particular place. The chasm line was the addition to the geography of their continent that led to incomplete use of Aons, hence resulting to Shaod.
It's a little clearer, but it's still the most confusing of Sanderson's magic systems for me.
@@mikesbookreviews yeah and the whole Dor system itself is clunky. We'll just have to wait for that Elantris sequel after Branderson finishes the First five books of SA. Hoping he'd get the system more understandable because I really love the inspiration for it (Korean scripture), and how it's like a language in and of itself.
@@Law-of-EnTropy I feel like the fully evolved Sanderson we have now will make a second Elantris book amazing and the magic system more digestible.
Mike's Book Reviews I’m writing a magic system like this one, but I’ve been writing about it before I even heard of Elantris.
I'm late to this party - but I think Emperor's Soul is definitely one of my favorite Sanderson works (outside of his WoT books and the imprinting from Mistborn being my first Sanderson book it probably is my favorite). I don't think the writing or setting were what set it apart, for me it's the themes that it touches on that I especially love. What makes you you? What impact do your memories have on who you are as a person, how would your personality change if you could alter your memories, or even more directly alter your personality? What's the value of authenticity - if you replace a painting with something that no one can tell is different, how much does it actually matter if it's a forgery? What are the moral/ethical implications of altering someone's core being with good intentions, and how far can you "tweak" someone before it becomes in effect killing the old person and replacing them with a new person? I love that kind of stuff (part of why I'm excited for you to get into the Prince of Nothing series - there's a lot of questions raised about things like the role of religion, considering bad actions with good intentions or good actions with bad intentions, conflicts between personal desires and societal good, etc)
Joseph Lee Brandon has mentioned the Ship Of Theseus in interviews before. It’s no surprise that’s he likes to deal with it in the Cosmere. And this is like a microcosm of it.
Remember all that talk about how “the Dor is tied to the land”? Well they weren’t joking. It’s why the shape of the Aons is influenced by the shape of Areleon. Why the creation of The Chasm meant the need for the a new line to represent it. And it’s how Sarene’s of hand remark that you draw said original Aon by making a map of Areleon is what gave Raoden the clue he needed to begin solving the puzzle. Need me to elaborate?
No, this is good. Thank you.
Mike's Book Reviews Glad I could help.
AonDor magic has been compared to a computer terminal and a programming language. Just Write out the codes and commands and execute. Requires a lot of study. Raoden gets attacked by the Dor, I believe, because of his 'healing' on his broken leg as a lad. He became attuned to the power young, then the Shaod touched him further and was bursting to be free. Brandon used to code. Write what you know.
It's easily the most complicated of his investiture. At least to me.
@@mikesbookreviews 100% agreed. The Selish shard of Dominion is......complicated.
Brando does an excellent job explaining rationale for the workings of magic on Sel in the 2 page intro prior to the short stories in Arcanum Unbounded. It helped me understand why Dor is location based (as far as one can understand Cosmere magic 😂)
In my opinion, the ending to Warbreaker is great. Like, the whole last act is really good, and cemented Lightsong as one of my top 3 Sanderson characters. However, the very very ending (like the last couple pages) is kind of rushed and lacking. I wonder if that's the part people are talking about when they say the ending is bad.
Hmmm. I will let you know probably in a couple of weeks what I think.
Realmatic Theory is understood by the Terris people of Scadrial - somehow. There are theories involving White Sand & Warbreaker characters crossing over at some point. Nothing is confirmed, but fun to think about.
Was it in Mistborn and I missed it? Given, I wasn't looking for it back then.
@@mikesbookreviews ....Scadrial system is Mistborn yes
@@Hadrian1616 No, I mean did someone bring up Realmatic Theory in Mistborn?
@@mikesbookreviews ...yes. Hero of Ages epigraphs. The hero discusses Realmatic theory.
We do see Kris in Secret History on Scadrial and she is from Taldane (White Sands). So there have been some people at least that got there. Also, Hoid mentions how it is much harder to get to Scadrial now that the Pits were destroyed. I think there was a singularity there.
It's signed by Sanderson! Yay!
In Texas, I believe all of the formerly known as Hardees became Carl's Jr.
This is correct. So weird I thought about that. I haven't been to a Hardee's since I was single digits in age.
Loved emperor's soul so much! I found it way better than Elantris
Brandon said Shai may make a cameo in the sequels.
I'd love to see it.
@@mikesbookreviews Or maybe make more than a cameo in The Lost Metal.
emperors souls was great. i loved elantris and hope of elantris but i understand that lots of people don't like it as much
I think reading it out of order, especially after Stormlight, influenced me on that one.
There are Hardee’s where I am.
Edit: St. Louis.
The 48th character of SLA was NOT a Bloodsealer. To my best understanding we've only seen them on Sel in this one story.
Ha ha, good to know
I personally found the story of Emperor's Soul kinda meh - good, but nothing special - but the main character and her abilities are great and I certainly wouldn't mind seeing more of her. I also love how this Forging is tied with other Cosmere works, mainly Stormlight - I mean, as she explains it, it's basically the same thing as Soulcasting, just done in a slightly different way for a different result.
We have Carl’s Jr. it’s the same shit.
