  • DHR or The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway built from 1879 to 1881 stops at India's highest railway station 'Ghum' at 7704ft.
We took the joy ride from Darjeeling to Ghum. The train runs from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling (known as the queen of the hills). But it takes a long time.
The train runs on a narrow gauge of 610mm and has to wind through the mountains run with Diesel or Steam Engines. It keeps honking as the traffic moves along the track and sometimes they do block the path of the train! There are shops and houses that whizz past with only a little distance from the train!
The Batasia Loop with views of the mountain and the Gorkha Memorial is one of the stops where tourists can view the surroundings while the train waits for 15 mins.
Ghum Station is the next stop. There is a Railway Museum which displays the history of the DHR. The train again waits for 15 mins and then journeys back to Darjeeling Station.
DHR is an UNESCO Heritage Site and a very enjoyable ride awaits you if you care for one!

Unfortunately the population pressure in our country is so high, the maintenance issues are sometimes there. The trains runs constantly from one end to the other with thousands and thousands of passengers. Also unlike the western countries our country has a lot of dust and grime due to the pollution issues. But it's not all that bad either, you have to experience India to understand the issues and it wont seem too bad then! Probably wouldn't be granted Heritage if it didn't deserve the tag! Do come and see for yourself.😊
