- For 50 years, she has represented all that is good about the enduring bonds between human beings and their dogs.
She first leaped to stardom in the 1943 MGM film, Lassie Come Home. At a time when families, still stunned from the Depression, were then torn apart by World War II, the story of a dog who fights every obstacle to return hundreds of miles to her young master moved audiences to tears and established Lassie as an American icon.
Lassie made seven MGM films. And when family films began to leave the big screen there were new horizons… first on radio and then on television.
The Story of Lassie Includes clips from Lassie MGM feature films as well as from Lassie’s TV shows, and interviews with trainer Robert Weatherwax; actor Roddy McDowall, Tommy Rettig, Jon Provost, Margaret O’Brien, Janet Leigh and others. Hosted by June Lockhart.

We need Lassie to return in a new tv series
Lassie is one of my fave dogs
I also grew up with Lassie......and I am still today watching Lassie almost every day ...because life was so simple then.... not like today.......!!!!!!!!Thank God for my childhood days.... the best years of my life......Thank you Lassie.........!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I named my dog Blassie in honor of Lassie the most beloved dog. Thanks for the happiness you brought us.
I grew up with the ranger years from the TV series. On weekends it was Bonanza, Lassie and Skippy.
Long Live Lassie!! a true companion and hero in every way!!! I love those films and show's!! Thanks Lassie!!!
One of the most beautiful Collies there was.
I grew up with lassie. love her.
I've seen just about every episode and movie of Lassie. Such a great theme, morals and values for us to live by. So sad they don't have great shows like this today...
Yeah the innocence is truly gone. I even remember recognizing its slow demise watching Lassie on Nickelodeon in the early 80s.
@@RemoWilliams1227 fall of Babylon. End times where immorality is king and people no longer fear God. Sad but true. God bless you all

i grew up watching Lassie my fav dog to watch.and still im still watching it.
thank you Rudd Weatherwax and family for all the years you all gave us love and happiness with your Lassie collies, may you and your (PAL and his family )Lassie's R.I.P.
Most of the Lassie films and TV series were before my time I really enjoy seeing them in reruns and always will
Thanks to all the stars and all the Lassies over the last 80 years
We currently have our 4th and 5th collie. We regularly take our dogs for a walk in a close by resort town and constantly get positive comments about our collie’s. They are like rock stars. There’s nothing like having a collie as a pet. Tucker and Hudson.
RIP Lassie who will be missed always!!! :(
Lassie always did the right thing no matter what the odds were and we can all learn from that, a guiding light if you will!
I adore lassie
A little over 20 years ago, my mother had the opportunity to meet Rudd Weatherwax and the (then) current Lasaie. She travelled a lot in her lifetime, all over the world; yet, she often remarked that meeting RA and "Lassie" was one of the biggest thrills of her life. It may seem a bit baffling ,but Lassie has a huge appeal for many, especially those that loved movie Lassie Come Home with Roddy McDowell and Elizabeth Taylor. My heart still melts remembering my childhood on Sunday evenings at 7 pm, when sweet Lassie lifted her paw on cue! 💝💛💜
I missed lassie. She,s my childhood dog in television. Growing up with her is wonderful. Now i am in my senior years and i still miss her. I have a dog name Champ she’s a chowchow and i love her so much.
I love chowchows. So fluffy and big, like tame bears!
Dogs are the most wonderful creatures, God bless them each and every one.
I love lassie so much
Dogs are the angels walking on earth, love them so much!
I agree
I love dogs to mutch!!! 🐕🐶🐩
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you I have meet Lassie and one of the actor. My veteran mother brought her Collie on the train. I use to have beautiful Collies. The Weatherwax, J P Morgan, Albert Paulsen Terhune. Including all of those who love animals, thank you, for bringing them into our lives for a thousand Reasons that are too numerous to mention. Especially for having all the wonderful memories.
I was born April 6, 1954. I started watching Lassie age 4. And here I am still watching this beloved TV show. I wish they would bring this show back. It would be a show that would teach all of our very young children about kindness and gentleness.
Oh god I cried all the way through I miss Lassie and those purer and more wholesome times.
I did too.
@@nunya2954 How to make a 65 year old man cry.... I STILL want a Lassie dog, just as I have for the last sixty years, when I first saw the TV Show.
I had a collie named Scotty. He looked just like Lassie. He was smart just like Lassie too. I love that dog like a child and miss him every day since he's been gone. had him for 16 years but finally had to put him down in 2009. Still miss him every day.
So right. They're family! We had a Chiweenie named Max. Had him for 15 years. What a pal!! He was my buddy. Where I was, he was. He was the best.
Thank you, Lassie, for a wonderful childhood!
I love this movie ,I watched when I was a child.
There is no good reason to excuse the absence of great family programing like "Lassie" from the 'air waves' today. Just open the vaults if Hollyweard can't or won't make the effort !
A ridiculously large portion of TV/Cable programs, 'kids' video games, music and movies are a warped, bald faced, by design detriment to the last two+ generations.
I remember as a child that Every Sunday the family went to church. We visited friends and family, ate an early supper, cleaned the kitchen, set out work/school clothes for Monday AM, got ready for bed and promptly at 7 PM we all found a comfortable spot to watch the next episode of "Lassie" and "Walt Disney".
We couldn't afford to go to restaurants, by junk or fast food, clothes were hand-me-downs. Movies had to be seen at drive-in theaters. Radios were mostly AM and that expensive black and white TV had tubes.
Those weren't just 'simpler times'.
We were well aware of who we were and what 'family' and 'community' means.
Encouragement and giving; patience, caring and responsible behavior were Expected.
With Hope, Love, Charity and Faith in place the rest was and is easy.
She is beautiful
I was just little when Lassie first came on tv. My mom used to put me on the couch to watch, and gave me a washcloth... cause the show would always make me cry. Finally, when I was adult, we bought our first collie, and they have been a part of our lives ever since. The Lassie temperament is real, and it has been present in the collies we've had. Our children, now grown, are presently searching for dogs of their own. And not any dogs, collies. They were the ultimate dog for our family: friends, protectors, and givers of joy to the end.
Don't make reality films as good as this . Lassie is and always will be a legend .
happy memories, we would go to the chapel hall every saturday morning to watch lassie films in the 60s
Lassie, I LOVE You!
I want have Lessi!!! I love she so mutch! 🐕🐶🐩
I watched everything Lassie as a boy. Now I'm 72. This brings back memories
72? Nice how your goodly connected to the internet, lol (wait do yk what "lol" means?)
@@Micah_YT to be sure
Aww Lassie so beautiful
Pal was the original Lassie that started it all in for MGM with his first movie Lassie Come Home in 1943 then six movies followed. Pal and 1954 a TV series of Lassie with 10 generations of Lassie soon followed all descendants of Pal. Trivia- male collies to used for character of Lassie; each dog was bred to have the original markings from Pal. Plus they wanted male dogs because their coats are thicker and the dogs as much as females.
I have Lassies biography titled Lassie A Dog's Life 55 years by Ace Collins it's very interesting. I gerw up watching Lassie reruns on Nickelodeon on a blank VHS tapes. I was born in the 80s so I grew up watching the new Lassie series on the fam Family Channel then I watched Lassie Canadian on Animal Planet when I was 13.
24 years since the last Lassie movie? Time for another somebody.
I would say my favorite Lassie was Lassie jr. with Tom Rittig and of course my very favorite was the Lassie (baby) with Jon Provost as Timmy and Lassie. I loved all the movies and all the shows from 1957-to the mid 1970's. I had a collie and know I have a shetland sheepdogs they are the best and so loving and faithful.
I love the Lassie movies and TV episodes so much and so does my Great Grandson. Great, wonderful family show.
I love watching lassie shows

I grew up watching Lassie, it brings tears to my eyes for the innocence of those times,i wish i could turn the clock back to that simple life
Me too and when i go out on Dartmoor with my Rough Collie the first thing people say look its Lassie !
Peter C+My Boyfriend and I did not grow up with Lassie, but my Boyfriend and I agree with what you have wrote. We too wish for a "simpler life" and Lassie does represent "innocence":). Lassie has a pure heart that we should all aspire to have within us:) We are big Lassie Fans and we watch Lassie Show recorded on DVR from Cozi TV. Our favorites are with Jon Provost and the first shows of Lassie in the 1950s "Jeff's Collie". Lassie is a beautiful Collie Dog too:).
Peter C thats gonna happen to me when I grow up too
So true - I watched a couple of old reruns last night and was crying at the end! So innocent and pure and MORAL.
Peter C I feel you...totally agree! I'm born in 1969 en also grew up with these wonderfull series. I do miss those times🌻🌳🐶

Meanness is how people teach others to despise them.

I love Lassie...Pal and family...l did a tribute video for Lassie and Jon Provost that played Timmy, he sent me an autograph photo...he is on Facebook, such a nice man...l wish we could travel back in time for love, respect and values in the world...today shows some not all, are terrible and disrespectful with no meaning of love and no lesson to learn...miss our Lassie!!!
I have all Lassie TV shows and movies to watch all the time now!!!
That's when we started liking dogs. Watching lassie. She was a good dog that made you feel good
I grew up with Lassie as well. Also me and Jon share same birth year!
I once rescued a Shetland Sheepdog/Collie (Lassie) named Madison from Biloxi MS back in May of 2004. Madison rescued my wife by her sheer presence in the area we lived. She also rescued my my daughter when she was just an infant by detecting a deadly poisonous spider from Australia on the couch right above her. Madison rescued our mood everyday. She passed away in late 2017. She got along with cats and many other dogs. Sometimes in the movie Lassie come home (circa 1945) it's like looking at her. So for me and my family and everyone who met her, it was like the fiction became real because it did. The legend became reality. The way she moved, behaved and her emotions showed on her face were amazing. I miss her But her memory lives on just like Lassie does. I hope that these dogs are protected and bred to be like her and Lassie. I have no doubt that there was something magical within her and to me she wasn't just a Lassie but another person of her own the whole time. In her last days, when she could no longer be herself from seizure drugs and other pain meds, she showed me that she was still there trapped in that body. She told me with her tail and and her eyes and sounds and reactions that she knew exactly who I was and that I was no regular person to her, but a soul who had crossed paths with her a million times before. she wanted to keep going but her body wouldn't let her. I'll never forget her for all my days and neither will my kids.
Lassie are angel!!! 😇👼😇
I love you lassie even though you are old you are so cute you are talented because you are like a celebrity because your acting you participated and you know how to do it well and act it well and you know how to swim
My Lassie (Kety) disappeared on this day in 2002. She never returned home. Forever in the memory. RIP.
I am sorry for your loss ,If it was me i would be devastated to loose My Alfie who is the spiiting image of Lassie .
So very sorry. My dog, Pembleton, ran away on 12/21/03. I never saw him again.

I love lassie
Lessie today 2021 is the one number shows EVER!!!!
Thanks for sharing I’ve been wanting to see it always been a fan of Lassie.
😩😩 this is my childhood movie
Just to have any kind of dog who is anything like Lassie should or would be a treat. For the past several years I have taken in dogs whose owners died. Dogs like humans grieve and need help once they lose their owners. There are dogs who actually become homeless due to no fault of their own. Help them if you can.
You have a wonderful 💜

I watch Lessi to!!!
Lassie was must-see tv for me in 1968, when I was three years old. It was on every afternoon at 3 pm, as part of the syndicated kiddie shows the local unaffiliated station showed every afternoon. It was the series with Jeffy, his mother (named Ellen I think), and Gramps. The series with Timmy also may have cycled through, as I remember his name as well.
Lassie books were published as a tie-in with the series, and when I was in the first grade I managed to get a few Lassie books from neighborhood garage sales. One was an old, extremely battered copy of "Lassie Come Home," and the other called was "Lassie and the Secret of Blackberry Bog," or something like that. I think I still have both stored away somewhere in a closet.
I never saw this!!! Absolutely love this puppy!!
