- Demon Space Ships Short Science Fiction Story From the 1940s Runaway by Author Alfred Coppel
Ripped by an asteroid stray, the space-ship drifted helplessly … until suddenly, across the shuddering deeps, a strange voice called to her. Runaway by Alfred Coppel, that’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.
Alfred Coppel has been on the podcast before, with The First Man on the Moon, Wreck Off Titan and The Flight of the Eagle. Every one of them a story set in space and today’s offering is more of the same, with a twist.

Gasoline cost 26 cents a gallon, Bread 14 cents a loaf and a gallon of Milk would set you back 84 cents. And the Spring 1949 issue of Planet Stories magazine contained stories by Henry Hasse, Ray Bradbury, Damon Knight and on page 31, Runaway by Alfred Coppel…
Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, The essential requirements of a first-class triggerman are two: that he know how to pull the trigger-and when not to! By J. F. Bone

That insight about vertigo caused by looking "up" at Jupiter is pure genius.
Coppel nailed it with this one. And I feel later scifi authors got some influence from the sentient spaceship premise. Thanks again for introducing me to another brilliant story, Scott.
Thank you Scott.
Thanks for the story, I enjoyed every minute!
Just wanted you to know i absolutely love your narration. Ive never missed an episode. And when you said you started this in hopes to help your wife if you pass on before her made me cry. Based on that one statement i pray i have as good of a marriage as you do. God bless you both
Thank you @Dani-c6w!! 😃😃🎉🎉 Thank you for your wonderfully kind comment! When I feel a little tired and want to take a break I remember why I'm doing this and get back in the booth to narrate another story. Which is exactly what I am going to do right now. I appreciate you and thanks for listening!!

Thank you for the story - - Well Read - -
Was thinking of a twist to the plot - - What if the life force that Clementine experienced was due to an unknown factor of the asteroid that impacted her atomic pile? And what ever was in the asteroid was now able to go back to the sun that was it's home, parent, source of life?
Wishing the best for your family
Did the sun explain to Clementine that these were among the first of his sentient children I wonder? And not to fear them over much?
Great story Scott. One minor thing, maybe I misheard you, forecastle is pronounced folksoul.
Thanks.
I'm just curious as to what you did before you started doing this on RUclips. You are so much better than this AI stuff . And you rarely mispronounce a word. I'm thinking there has to be a lot of experience or training going on here
