In January of 1965 I was a young man in the US Navy. I was stationed at Millington Naval Air Station (NAS Memphis). I was finally able to get off the base and made my way into Memphis and out to Graceland. Graceland was on the outskirts of town in a rural area at that time. I was in uniform and standing right at the front gate to Graceland by myself. The fence around the front of the property was a kind chain link design with musical notes like a stanza of music. As I stood looking in at Graceland the gate began to open. I thought someone was leaving the property. I was surprised to turn around and see a car drive up behind me. It was Elvis! He was driving a beautiful black 1964 Chrysler 300 convertible. He stopped the car right beside me. I was standing at the passenger door. I was startled to say the least. He then got out of the car and said, "Thank you for stopping by". I was too dumbfounded to even answer him. He looked as good or better than I had seen him in the movies or in any photos. Whatever else he may or may not have been, he did take the time and trouble to acknowledge a young sailor standing at this gate.
I'm sure the man had issues. I believe he also had a good heart. I remember, during an interview, he once said, "The entertainer and the man are two different people" (effectually) ... Dying at age 42 from unnatural causes is certainly tragic.
I also remember his mother Gladys say that, "This family was a lot happier when we were poor". I enjoy his music to this day. My wife and I recently visited Graceland and although it was 58 years later, and unrecognizable, that front gate is exactly as I remember it. RCA's Studio B, in Nashville, where Elvis recorded some great music was a very worthwhile thing to do also.

When I read passages about how Elvis had an aversion to women with big feet or any number of stories meant to embarrass him having nothing to do with drugs, I realized it was just a mean spirited book meant to hurt Elvis and humiliate him for being Elvis Presley while they were nothing but hangers having a good time on Elvis' money.

It’s such a shame that we will never hear BOTH sides of the story. This ONE side has been rehashed for almost 6 decades. It’s easy for Priscilla, Hebler, and others who betrayed Elvis, to tell lies that make them look saint like, while robbing Elvis of his dignity and privacy, knowing he can’t, due to his death, defend himself.
When someone you love dies, you speak of their best qualities, and keep to yourself their shortcomings or intimate things that should be kept private.
Obviously, Hebler, Priscilla, and others didn’t love him and don’t even have the decency to keep quiet out of respect for those who do.

One thing I wish people would do is to look at Elvis' life through the lense of the 1970's- not 2024!!.
Elvis did have serious health issues at the end of his life, he was in pain, and probably felt miserable most of the time- even with all that, the man put on hot, heavy jumpsuits and sang his heart out- he did that because families depended on him to get paid, and to make his fams happy- that, in itself should be praiseworthy. I dont know anyone who would continue working in that shape! Also, he was treated with the medical treatment of the time- painpills- from his doctor! Anyone who take opiates for any period of time get a tolerance, and doctors were next to God when it came to respect and authority in the 1970's! Noone heard of prescription drug addiction then, and there were no treatment centers. Betty Ford clinic opened in 1975!!! Anyone who takes narcotics for a long time does have mood swings, and do things they would not normally do. Elvis was human. No matter what he did or did not do, I believe with all my heart that Elvis put much more good into the world than he ever did bad. I have loved Elvis my entire life, and nothing would change that. I am grateful for the artistic contributions he made to American culture, and I will always be grateful that I was alive and got to share the world when Elvis was alive.

Was it because you loved the lifestyle Elvis granted you and were very angry that he had the audacity to have you fired and somehow, some way you were going to pay him back and make money doing it.
In my opinion, you felt like Elvis screwed you for firing you, I agree Vernon messed this up badly, but by your anger in doing this book the Publishers screwed you, because doing anything out of revenge will always come back at you twofold. Just by the anger in your voice it sounds as if you have never forgiven Elvis for firing you personally. When in fact 96% of employed people that are fired were not hired by the same person. You are way more professional than I would have ever been. First off let me thank you for making all of the content you and Michael have already made. At 48 years old I've also been a massive Elvis fan my entire life. I read this book in my teens and I was blown away. The internet did not exist then so all I knew was from the movies I watched hundreds of times over like Elvis on tour, Elvis that's the way it is and the biopic this is Elvis. That's the only Elvis I knew. I'm quite certain most of what is in the book is true and I believe he's lying through his teeth when he said he was surprised by what was in the book after what him read and Sonny talked about for 30 days was all good stories and funny stories. He's lying through his teeth. He had to proof the book and sign off on it. He's trying to backtrack all these years later because he's probably been the target of hatred from tens of thousands of Elvis fans for the last 47 years. He comes across as arrogant and I'm not sure how you sat there so calmly. At any rate, nice job for keeping your composure. He even admitted he was in California when he was not on duty so I question how many times he was even actually at the memphian with Elvis.

    • @sandralybrand9425

He's one that exaggerated the time he spent with Elvis or events that happened. There were some that wrote books that talked about some events that they weren't at but wrote stories like they were when they only heard. Billy Smith said that, but would never name who was lying. Billy knows alot of things on everyone but won't say or name the people, because he's an honorable man! If Billy wasn't present at something that happened and is asked about it, he'll tell you he wasn't. Elvis told Billy alot of things but even to this day, he wont betray Elvis confidences that he told him in private. Dave has always been with an angry attitude and resents people trying to know the truth! He's always very defensive before the conversation even starts! They were fired for roughing up the fans is why they were let go. Vernon was the cause of the hard feelings by not giving them the $5000 apiece Elvis told him to. That caused the anger, which I would be also. But I wouldn't run out and write a book to smear my so called friend. If They'd let Elvis know that they didn't think it was fair to only get a weeks pay and no notice, Elvis would've realized That Vernon didn't do the right thing and he would've corrected it! Elvis was facing several lawsuits from rough treatment of the fans. Elvis planned on hiring them back after a month or 2 to teach them a lesson according to Billy! I believe Billy, because when Red recorded the phone call with Elvis, Elvis ended the call saying if there's anything I can do for you I'm still here! Red recording Elvis shows how low Red was! A friend of thirty years doesn't do that, I don't care how mad you are! That's Why I believe it was Reds idea about doing the book! Also they had to tell bad things about Elvis or it wouldn't have been in the book! Don't blame the editor! 😡

Dave still sounds so bitter and defensive. It seems clear they wrote the book as a “payback” or a “we’ll show him” type of thing, not to mention a chance to make some money. The thing they never could’ve known was that Elvis would die right around the same time the book came out. Bad timing for Red, Sonny and Dave! So, many fans associated the two events together (i.e. the book helped lead to Elvis’s death). Elvis was no saint and I think most things in the book have been corroborated as true; but I wish Hebler would admit it was no attempt to help Elvis because he cared for him, etc. He was pissed, hurt, angry - as was Red and Sonny - so they went after him! Thanks for your respectful interview with Dave Hebler. I went to see him at the Memphian during Elvis Week. The fans from the gate (the regulars & I was one of them) were usually waiting at the theater where Elvis watched movies on the weekends. We would usually follow him to the places he would play raquetball, then leave to check out the theaters (usually the Memphian & Crosstown in 1975 - 1976). We could tell which theater he would be going to according to the lights that were left on at midnight for him.

That did not give them the right to disclose Elvis's personal private life to the world. If Dave wanted the fans to believe that he participated in the book to help Elvis, he shouldn't have kept saying how angry he was when he got fired. They either did
      1) did not read carefully their contract with the publisher carefully
      or
      2) the ghost writer did not make anything up.
Either way, I think the three of them must have had a contract with small print. Small print stuff still needs to be read. I realize they were out of work but in 1977 they were eligible for unemployment. They also could have brought the contract to a lawyer at some “Legal Aid” society before they signed it.
Just my opinion, I am guessing they signed a contract they laid everything out, albeit in small print, so they would not have ever been able to sue. And because Elvis was getting sued for them being so rough with the fans, there is no way they could have sued for “wrongful termination”.

After reading all the comments, my feelings and opinions about Dave are validated and there's no need to reiterate what everyone else has expressed that was on point. After watching how defensive and bitter he is, my feelings about Dave are even stronger than they were before. One thing I wanted to point out is when Jay asked him if there was a difference between where he stood in this story compared to Red and Sonny who were almost life long friends, and why he felt the need to get involved instead of letting the guys who knew him the best deal with it, and his response was, "because all three of us were fired, so all 3 of us joined together and went public." This proves what his true intentions were cause what does the subject of getting fired have to do with "helping" Elvis wake up and get help?? Bottom line, when they got fired, instead of deciding to write a tell all book for the world to see, exposing Elvis' private and personal business, they should have instead just swallowed their pride and dusted themselves off and moved on with their lives. People get fired all the time and have to suck it up and just find another job and just cause they worked for Elvis, doesn't mean they couldn't just deal with getting fired from any job.
Well done Jay. Thank you so much for doing this interview and although I am disgusted with Dave, I did enjoy watching this.

There's a lot of respect shown both ways with this interview so well done Jay and Mr Hebler. I think Dave's opening point remains the common thread - "You hired me to my face - now fire me to my face". The reference to "fired with 2 days pay... how would you feel...?" That doesn't sound to me like the platform to write a book to help a friend. It would appear to me that it was a book written out of emotion - All I would say to Dave is the manner in which he was hired is the same way Elvis operated with everyone in the inner circle - by his own admission Elvis gave Dave a Mercedes Benz in the first few days of employing him... A $10,000 Mercedes in 1972 is worth more than $75,000 today - that's a pretty good severance pay I would have thought. I wish there could have been an appreciation for all Elvis did for the inner circle of that fact NOT the manner in which the relationship ended.

Vernon wasn’t lying when he spoke of cutting back, removing them from the payroll would kill two birds with one stone….Elvis knew, he would rehire all three when his finances improved. He sold his songbook to RCA for $5M (Parker took half and gambled it away) and $2M for the divorce settlement which left him still reeling in debts because of the lawsuits. Dave Hebler, when answering a question is always holding back…he never tells the WHOLE truth…just says the part that makes him look like a victim….NEVER OWNING HIS PART OR TAKING ACCOUNTABILITY FOR HIS ACTIONS. At 20 years old, I got laid off at my first job, I was told they were cutting back, it wasn’t the truth… I got no notice, I was to leave on the spot, no severance…. I went home, had a pity party then pulled myself up by the bootstrap and found another job….that was in 1976….didn’t spend the next 47 years with a chip on my shoulders….you Mr. Hebler have a chip on your shoulder….yet, you have been making money off of Elvis’ name for all these years…go figure🤷‍♀️🤨

You're story is so much like mine- I was 15yrs old also and remember something that hasn't been mentioned here that from when they were sacked, it was known it was because they were heavy handed with fans. Also I have a problem with the fact that if he gave info to HELP Elvis with his 'problem' as he maintains who was his boss & friend, I would have insisted on proof reading before publishing to ENSURE it was accurate which did not happen here. I feel that they did not care to read it because they wanted the money & believed they were entitled & then furious that Elvis would no longer take care of them.
Elvis was loyal all those years and he looked after them all-this was so well known.
I remember on occasions hearing that some of elvis' entourage didn't care to be with him the same as earlier years-the dynamics had changed and I get this. But maybe just maybe THEY changed toward Elvis also and took advantage of Elvis yet still expected everything.
Hebler said it himself " everyone else makes millions of dollars off Elvis so he does too" .
      I don't like this guy-hes bitter.
Red and Sonny West were the same.
      So they appreciated little.
They must have known how the release of such a trashy book would hurt Elvis and seriously but they did not give 5 mins to consider the obvious because they had hate and anger. Why would you not proof read for accuracy and why would you employ a trashy interviewer like Steve Dunleavy if you had sincere intentions?
Even to this day he cannot accept and say that hey all those years I received so much so I'll walk away like a gentleman.

If Lisa was smart, she should have spent time asking Red, Sonny, Joe and especially Billy about who her Dad was and the special times they shared. These guys knew him better than anyone. She thought she knew her Dad. A young daughter will only know a portion of their Dad.

Red and Sunny did quite well after Elvis; the doors opened to them from connections Elvis gave them in Hollywood led to their successes. Did Dave mention all the extras (gifts) he and especially Red and Sonny received from Elvis prior to their termination! And just the honor of being an Elvis employee. I'd have paid Elvis to be part of his security team. Just the notoriety Dave received from that opened many doors throughout his life and I'm sure he took advantage of it and made $$$$ thanks to Elvis!

    READ THIS
It was wrong for Vernon to fire the guys, but Vernon took care of the cash. Elvis was not exactly rolling in it at this time, he sold his back catalogue to a bankrupt RCA for $5m usd. Colonel got $2.5m and gambled it and Elvis recieved $2.5m and from that he gave Priscilla her $2m usd divorce settlement. This meant Elvis had to perform live for the rest of his life. There were lawsuits coming into Graceland for heavy handling of fans by the three bodyguards. This is the real reason they were let go. They got a book deal and ignorantly signed a publishing deal without being very informed or having legal representation.
    Dave Hebler comes across as sincere, he was right about EPE exploiting Elvis every day, the Col and Jack Soden made more out of Elvis than Elvis made out of Elvis... however 3 things stick in my head;
1 Diamond Joe Esposito was interviewed on the lawn of Graceland after Vernon asked him to go talk with the worlds media on the night Elvis was pronounced, Joe said "I hope those guys can live with what they've done"
Well, 50 years later its still a touchy subject as we see here on this video.
2 Look at how close Elvis' death was to the publishing of the book, just two weeks, and despite what anyone may believe, Elvis was very stressed and reactive and buried himself in meds.
    3
I was singing as an ETA in Bonhams London when a big auction for Elvis memorabilia took place there, somewhere around 1999, Dave Hebler submitted a Black Velour Shirt to the auction and authenticated it stating it was "Gifted him by Elvis and was in fact the renowned "Tupelo shirt."
It was bought by Frank Skinner the British Celebrity, who came to know later that it was in fact "not the Tupelo shirt" and after paying something to the tune of $15,000 he had to follow Mr Hebler to the USA and confronted him about it... he had to accept Dave Heblers word, which he did not.
Elvis was forgiving yes, and we as Elvis fans must forgive as Elvis was a very flawed human being, but we cannot turn back the clock nor the tragic consequences of an ill judged action on behalf of the three bodyguards. Elvis fans are the sweetest in the world, but they got a nose for the truth. May Elvis and the deceased members of his entourage who were so loyal to him, like Al Dvorin, Lamarr and Charlie and the others rest in peace. TCB/\/

Well written and I agree with you. I can't give Hebler a pass on his decision about that book. He has doubled down time after time on his sad excuses for his role in writing it. He has had 48 years to self reflect on why it was necessary to kick a man when he was down and at his worst health wise. Instead he blames "those haters" like me, evidently who point out his lack of integrity. It doesn't take a very smart person to understand that book helped Elvis spiral beyond help.
I don't hate him at all... just his ability to betray Elvis. He continues to be present in the Elvis world even though his bitterness still shows? It was always about money and book deals. Elvis didn't trust him, rightly so! Good comment, peace to you!

But this book sold in the millions and even the answer he gave as to how much he earned was deceptive because he divided a fixed fee by the number of books actually sold. Then he went on to say "My act" what act is that? Hello. No mention, I notice, about the cars, houses and money that Elvis gave those guys and the myriad other ways Elvis helped them (by their own admission). How many employees get treated like part of the family and invited to the cinema, on holidays, et al? Let’s be honest, one week’s notice is pretty standard in America, even now, so hardly that shocking an outcome, and based upon how they responded, I’d suggest fully merited. Mr Hebler, if you are going to take the 30 pieces of silver then have the moral courage to admit it as opposed to attempting to make money off Elvis’ name in perpetuity. I ended the video after about 10-minutes as there was no pretence at any regret nor apology. Thank you for at least proving David’s motives are exactly what we thought. Having said that, I wish him and everyone here a lovely day. PS: if you have seen the relevant interview with the wonderful Mac Davis, the rule about not sitting beside Elvis, nor in front, in the cinema was not Elvis’ rule, but one dictated by his guys. Elvis was shocked when Mac told him about the “supposed” rule. At least, that what Mr Davis said. Cheers. 😁

He said, he went to the publisher and tried to stop the book, but they said, too bad sex and drugs sell and fluffed him off. I always wished I would come across another video with him. That was about 5 years ago when I was a new fan. But I really didn't hear him say he wished he could have gotten a publisher that would have printed their words. Not twisted them. Instead he seemed ok with the book. Just my feelings. Thank you for asking some hard questions. I have never read the book. Now days you can self publish a book but in the 70’s to the 2000’s you have to find a publisher to publish your book. A book driven by bitterness and resentment hidden under the guise of help and "tough love". To love Elvis Presley, is to cherish him for all that he was and wasn't. He wasn't all unmatched beauty and supernatural charisma and talent. You have to love him for all his warts and he had plenty in the last few years of his life. Great interview!!! Dave seems sincere and honest. Personality even comes thru at times.
    He was the quiet one.
    Again, very revealing! Thoroughly enjoyable!

Jay, Dave & Michael, Thank you. This is a valuable gem of an interview, it has enriched my understanding of Dave Hebler. Jay, thank you for your respectful, diplomatic manner and I appreciate your sensitivity to the different perspectives, you're a class act. We are losing too many of those that were there. We are lucky to still have this living history. I hold no judgment on Dave, I respect him even more now. I'm taking his word that he did love Elvis, and he loved what he was doing and was deeply hurt by having that extraordinary life experience and close relationship with Elvis suddenly come to an end in such an impersonal way. I wish Dave health and happiness and my gratitude to him for sharing his story and my thanks to Jay & Michael for bringing it to us.

When he tried the lie of saying he was selling pictures of himself (like that's in demand by anyone) but Elvis just happened to be in the picture...yeah right! If that's the case, why not try selling pictures of JUST himself and see how that goes! Great job interviewing. I love all of your videos and the fascinating places you take the viewers.

Where do you think Elvis was when Vernon fired the group of Elvis's men. Question to Dave if you know.

@chrisgill5642 so someone who had a fake image about drug use, almost put a hit on his wife's boyfriend, makes you like him better?

To me the book made me realize that Elvis was a human being with the same issues as millions of others. He was a man with many redeeming qualities, tremendous talent, generosity to a fault. He lived and loved hard. He, also, had faults, just like you and I. But as he himself said, it’s hard to live up to an image. He was basically a prisoner of his own fame. The book made me love Elvis even more.

“Col. Tom Parker” Someone should have written a book on Col. Tom Parker, starting with his life before Elvis to his hiring and the Vegas years telling on his gambling debts that Elvis had to work off. It’s no wonder Elvis was pushed to the limits in his career and life.
