I always had respect for Dave Hebler he’s the one who asked the fundamental question “how do you help a man who doesn’t want to to help himself” I don’t think people really understand how deep into his problem Elvis was and how far in denial he was with his physical condition.

This guy is a waste of space he’s angry that he was duped and made no money off that book. He came on the scene way too late to add any substance. I always felt Sonny and especially Red bitterly regretted it. Elvis should have kept the West boys Red was around him from the beginning the drugs obviously played a huge part of his decision making!! wish things could’ve been different! Love you Elvis as for you Dave Hebler crawl back under a rock Elvis should’ve not invited you in!!!!

If not for the money, then the book was undoubtedly aimed at the heart. Elvis had read copies of parts of the manuscript as the book's impending release became a certainty by March 1977. Everything about Elvis visibly changed thereon, culminating in the event of 16th August 1977. The book was the final nail, and the guys knew it. Steve Dunleavy assembled the book from a month's worth of their stories, nobody else's. Vernon and Elvis admittedly took the wrong steps, but so did they in their revengeful manner. Tragic turn of events.

Mr. Hebler is a jealous, envious jerk. He wanted to portray Elvis as a demon. Shame on him, and the others. Revenge is a savage characteristic to possess. The book would not have been written if they had not been fired. Again, Hebler makes me sick of my stomach.

I have probably seen every video about this book also of the Memphis Maphia speaking about Elvis’s addiction. When Lamar Fike, Joe Esposito, Red West and Sonny West was alive I wish someone would have ask including Billy Smith and Dave why didn’t all of you go to Elvis together and tell him how everyone of you are concerned. Everyone speaks of emptying the drug out of the pills and speaking to Elvis privately but they didn’t think that as the whole group might would have been more effective? Just flat don’t make since.

I would respect him more if he just admitted that they were angry and wrote the book to hurt Elvis. Understandable. If the final product wasn’t what they wanted, why didn’t they sue to stop production? Why take any money from it if it didn’t accurately portray your intent?

"Elvis What happened?" was an honest account. It has been verified by other books and I have read them all. As a fan of Elvis, I can honestly say Elvis allowed himself to become a drug-addled freak. Drugs and alcohol change people-never for the better. Elvis is responsible for his transformation-no one else.

The one thing some don’t talk about is Elvis’ hereditary heart condition that contributed to some of his meds and would eventually take his life sooner than some at his age. He had a good southern heart, voice, talent and so much love. He had no idea how his life would change when he began his career and how many people would be in his life. I think things would’ve been much different had his Mother lived longer. It seems like Vernon was at odds with Elvis quite often. He was in control of everything and did try to watch the money. Such a shame.

Hello. No mention, I notice, about the cars, houses and money that Elvis gave those guys and the myriad other ways Elvis helped them by their own admission. How many employees get treated like part of the family and invited to the cinema, et al? Let’s be honest, one week’s notice is pretty standard in America, even now, so hardly that shocking an outcome, and based upon how they responded, I’d suggest fully merited. Mr Hebler, if you are going to take the 30 pieces of silver then have the moral courage to admit it as opposed to attempting to make money off Elvis’ name in perpetuity. I ended the video after about 10-minutes as there was no pretence at any regret nor apology. Thank you for at least proving David’s motives are exactly what we thought. Having said that, I wish him and everyone here a lovely day. PS: if you have seen the relevant interview with the wonderful Mac Davis, the rule about not sitting beside Elvis, nor in front, in the cinema was not Elvis’ rule, but one dictated by his guys. Elvis was shocked when Mac told him about the “supposed” rule. At least, that what Mr Davis said. Cheers. 😁

Dave Hebler is a condescending egotistical angry and bitter old man who didn’t deserve to be in Elvis’s circle and breath the same air. He got fired and it wouldn’t have made a difference if Elvis was the one that fired him. They wrote a revenge book to make money. This entire interview he was very angry and defensive. I never read the book and could care less about any of his self righteous explanations. I sincerely hope that he wasn’t paid to do his interview. How anyone could possibly have any respect for this man is beyond me he isn’t fit to tie Elvis’s boot straps.

Thank you for sharing this GREAT interview. I feel bad for Dave Hebler, how he is still regarded by so many. It wasn't very honorable to share some of the intimate details in he and Sonny and Red's book, but I read it a couple years ago and enjoyed it. Definitely TMI for most fans who may not be very compassionate, understanding or forgiving of very human behaviour...the same way they can't understand and forgive Dave, Red and Sonny for being so hurt and resentful 48 years ago when they were let go/cast out of Elvis' inner circle and payroll...Elvis was their entire life, livelihood, bread and butter, and creator of nearly all their experiences for years. Elvis took on way too much responsibility keeping all his friends employed, fed and taken care of. There is no easy way to end that. Egos get hurt and often lash out..Especially understandable when coming from extreme poverty like Dave and then tasting the good life for so long thanks to his friendship and working relationship with Elvis. Doesn't make it right, it's just very human. I hope people will forgive Dave, Sonny and Red. They have been judged and condemned for nearly half a century for participating in the writing of that book and have paid the price for it..(Sonny and Red sadly are still judged beyond the grave). In hindsight, I'm sure they would've all preferred to sit down with Elvis and hug it out with an apology after the book came out..it's just not the way things went...Very sad for all of them, most certainly including Elvis who didn't deserve parts of that book being written about him.

I truly believe they wrote the book out of anger but they got together and came up wigh the plan to tell the world they wrote it out of desperation to save Elvis' life and by saying that the public would not hate them so much. That reason of trying to save Elvis did help with the fall out from the public but just a little. I don't think anyone has truly accepted that as the reason for writing the book. I know I don't but Im so tired of Dave saying he made no money from the book. Sonny admitted they acccepted an advance before the book was even printed and I heard that advance was $50,000 a piece which is like $300,000 now days. So if they never made another dime the advanced supportedd them and their families for years.

Hebler still does not understand something all these 50 years later. He did NOT work 'for Elvis' as he thinks. He worked for Elvis Presley Enterprises. He basically worked for Vernon. He got LAID OFF. He did NOT get fired, as he thinks. Layoffs are done every single DAY by Corporate America. Secondly, he was NOT in a position to KNOW whether or not Elvis Presley Enterprises was in a bad OR good financial position. He was looking at it thru the lense of an ordinary employee. Thirdly, Elvis did not OWE him a sit down meeting, and do the lay off himSELF. Elvis did not owe him that. These Memphis Mafia guys extrapolated their relationship with Elvis. They were paid employees-- not selected best friends. What happened to him hurt him, but getting one weeks pay at that time in the 1970s was pretty commonplace. Being laid off has happened to millions of people. Most of them don't write a tell all book airing out the dirty laundry of their employers. I read the book... when it came out. Some of it sounded very true, and some of it just smacked of dirt. Lotta folks like to read the dirt, and so they put some dirt in the book. Some of it may have actually NEEDED to be told, in a last attempt to get Elvis to clean up from the drugs. Some of it may have been written with that in mind. But Hebler gets the firing all wrong.

Sorry to leave another comment, but it was going to come out sooner or later about Elvis. I was young when he passed away but when you saw him on that concert, you knew something was wrong. You’re like what is he on if they didn’t write the book before he passed away, it definitely would’ve came out realistically after he passed away by them or other people Elton John said when him and his mother went to see him backstage, how drugged up he was and his mother said my God he’s gonna be dead within a year if he don’t stop the drugs, they didn’t know he was going to the concert that night But he did it definitely would’ve came out after he passed away. We don’t know why he passed away because his dad blocked it for 50 years but some reason why his dad did that do I think this Guy should’ve said was he sorry the way the book came out That he wish it would’ve came out a different way yes but like I said, it definitely would’ve came out. I think it was 1975. They was all pulling in to do the one concert and reporter said the old has been drug addict overweight he cancels his concert all the time and this is what the reporter was saying, Elvis was a human being. Elvis got very depressed very unhappy. He didn’t want to be doing what he was doing at the end. I never looked down on him for one minute. Why would I? He was human he had a great talent. He was very good looking nothing will take that away from him.

You all are still butt hurt over this book! Hebler, Sonny, and Red have been very clear about why they provided details about Elvis's drug habits. Yeah, they got screwed about how that story was told by Dunleavy, who was a scumbag sensationalist journalist. We all were loyal to the type of Elvis we loved. No one, at that time was aware of what was going on behind the curtain. No Betty Ford clinics or even any good addiction prevention back then. Just a bunch of enablers. People with addictions have to want help first. No way Elvis was going to concede that he had a problem. Stop being so woke and personally hurt by this. It's been 47 years people. Love Elvis for what he left us with. His music and talent.

What a very bitter and pathetic person. He is still full of anger. He says he didn’t have a way to provide for his family? Anyone who works in entertainment knows it can end overnight. Elvis’s career survived much longer than most. Playing a victim of Elvis and then a book publisher? Really? If the book was inaccurate and not representative of what he told the publisher why didn’t he file suit against the publisher?

There's a lot of respect shown both ways with this interview so well done Jay and Mr Hebler. I think Dave's opening point remains the common thread - "You hired me to my face - now fire me to my face". The reference to "fired with 2 days pay... how would you feel...?" That doesn't sound to me like the platform to write a book to help a friend. It would appear to me that it was a book written out of emotion - All I would say to Dave is the manner in which he was hired is the same way Elvis operated with everyone in the inner circle - by his own admission Elvis gave Dave a Mercedes Benz in the first few days of employing him... A $10,000 Mercedes in 1972 is worth more than $75,000 today - that's a pretty good severance pay I would have thought. I wish there could have been an appreciation for all Elvis did for the inner circle of that fact NOT the manner in which the relationship ended.
