Do Politics Belong In Music?

- With the US Presidential election coming up on Tuesday November 5th, the dumpster fire of a campaign season has shown us just how divisive politics can be. For this episode of the Sound Exchange Sessions, Anthony and I ask the question Do Politics Belong In Music?

Everything that matters to an artist belongs in their music.
If you were a bot for the WEF you’d be doing your job to a t
But, not outside their music.
then why don't they sing about their parents, kids or their favorite food or TV show. lol it's about choices you can sing about "letting children getting a sex change" or shut up b/c you know it's not a universally accepted opinion.
My big issue is when musicians or celebrities vocally support a political agenda - it often feels like it’s with contempt for those who don’t agree with them. Like if you don’t share their beliefs, then you’re a fool and not a true fan. But with the country politically split down the middle, I don’t know why any musician or celeb would want to (potentially) alienate half of their US fan base. Seems fiscally shortsighted.
My thoughts also why upset half your fans.People like Waters,Springsteen and Nugent need to just shutup. They have no idea what the little guy has to go through
@@JaredLitherland agreed
I agree totally with your conversation and opinions here. Just play your music. Don’t make me take sides. Why do musicians have to ruin the experience for me, and not want me to play their music anymore.
As Tom Petty said, “well I ain’t in the left…and I ain’t in the right…I’m not even sure I got a dog in this fight”…from “Shadow People” off the masterpiece album, HYPNOTIC EYE
That means one side will say you stand by and watch people suffer
Bob Dylan, Neil Young, CSN, Jefferson Air Plane, Buffalo Springfield, CCR, Grateful Dead, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, John Lennon! A huge amount of 60's and 70's music was very political about Vietnam and social issues. It is a major part of the evolution of music in the last 50-60 years. Just say'n.
Unpopular opinion here, but I enjoy it in my music, as in the lyrics. I thought Dylan’s early protest songs were important in mobilizing the youth and counterculture. I am grateful artists like Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie had the courage to say what they did in their songs.
I agree that sometimes it works and is powerful. I thought Neil Young’s protest album Living With War was amazing.
@@anthonyhowell5117 I think the key difference between then and now is that before it was about issues. Now it’s more about slander against a particular politician.
@@BrendonSnyder Problem is politics is inherently divisive. It seemed in earlier decades people could have differences but still be friends whereas now the level of polarisation means the demonisation of opponents. Trump is a buffoon in many ways, but appeals deeply to alot of Americans on a certain level. Trying to understand that rather than castigating his voters surely is a better way to go. But sectarianism seems so deeply entrenched that respecting the right of someone to have an opposing viewpoint is no longer a reasonable option.
I’m anti-war , so I am in agreement when it comes to matters of war. That, I feel does belong in music
Politics have always been a part of music. Start out with limericks that have hidden political meaning because it was too dangerous to say it any other way.
Some of the best music has been political. From blues to folk, rock and punk and so on. I can't imagine why anyone who considers themselves even vaguely knowledgeable about music would not understand how interconnected they are. It's like saying there should be no political movies or books or art. It's not simply decorative or entertaining. Its there to challenge and change, to use artistic expression to beat suppression.
Even sports are war games cleaned up and made presentable. They all speak to the human condition.
Music without a message is only entertainment, but never art.
Controversial topics have always been apart of art. If you dont like it there is plenty of pop music to listen to. Asking an artist to not include their thoughts in their art is crazy.
Elvis had the right idea, " I'm just an entertainer, i just want to entertain ".
I thought he was for Nixon....but who cares there both Dead..
Nobody wants to feel like they're being preached to, especially when it comes to politics.
I love Southern Man AND Sweet Home Alabama. I also love this channel; thanks for the great content.
I think you are onto something with the idea of protest music, I love a lot of protest songs. Divisive partisan politics does not belong in music but protesting injustice sure does!
sorry guys the US election is not a "dumpster fire" it is an "absolute clusterfuck" as it has been referred to in Australia. I'm not really a fan of musicians throwing their politics down out necks. In Australia with a protest / political band called Midnight Oil, their songs spoke out against various injustices against the indigenous people in Australia and also social & political issues in Australia and in the US at the time of the Reagan & Bush era's (particularly with songs like US Forces, Power & The Passion). One of their biggest issues was regarding nuclear disarmament in the world.
Now those bands, like Midnight Oil, have a valid point in bringing out the injustices of society
@andyspence4724 Redgum were very articulate as well in addressing similar issues like Midnight Oil. No Fixed Address, Kevin Carmody as well.
Politics has always been in music.
Fast and quick answer....... NO!
I don't care about anybody's political views or any other controversial topic view. I'm not there to hear them talk about that kind of stuff at a live show. I don't even care if I agree with them and think the same way they do. I do not feel it belongs in the music or concert environment. If they want to write songs about something, feel free. That's a different story. Just don't waste my time doing it live!
The same goes for Hollywood stars! Please, keep your opinions to yourself and those who might want to talk to you about them. Don't try to influence your fans.
Brian in Fort Worth 🎶
I don't want politics in my music, especially when it is preaching. Same thing with religion.
I separate the person from the music as much as I can because if I looked into all these bands' personal lives, politics or views, I wouldn't be able to listen to anything.
Music has been used to share political messages for DECADES, and it should be no different now. I welcome both sides to share their opinions through all forms of art including music.
Music has always been political 🤷♂️
Great video, guys, with some really good points. It's always cool to see Brendon and Anthony just rapping about real stuff!
Great video and more over, great conversation. I teach a HS elective on the connection between music and history, this week it is all about political campaigns. great stuff.
Thank you Mike!
I'm Canadian, nuff said. Great discussion guys. New to the chanel. Love it.
…watching us burn and crumble from a distance 😂
@@BrendonSnyder Second record store talk. You guys vibe.
@@BrendonSnyder
Canada is burning and crumbling too Brendon. You guys aren’t alone down there in the United States.
Sick of some of these musicians and celebrities pushing for certain candidates. Or pushing agendas that are actually harmful to people. Play your music, sing your song, and move on.
@@pilgrim3387 believe it or not that opinion is the one that the deep state shadow government really doesn’t want you having
It definitely does not help anything. It takes your enjoyment away from the music.
@@fclefjefff4041do you?
@fclefjefff4041 Well that's his view ,I wouldn't stop listening to some one because of there politics. If I like the music I will listen ,that's the 1 st amendment freedom of Speech.I went to High School in the 60s so I saw what was going on.Take care,my man ,have a good night...peace...
Even if you agree with their politics there's nothing justifying hearing a drunk Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam ranting for 15 minutes about abortion in the middle of the show. Concerts are NOT political rallies, they're a fun night out for hard working people who pay TOO MUCH money to see a band live.
"I'm fine with politics in music as long as it's MY politics." - Most peoples' unspoken opinion.
Springsteen was Pissing on the American flag, Born in the USA album art. So, so many people don't realize that
Music is art. Of course politics belong.
I feel like some of the more simple yea vote comments are dead internet bots programmed by a globalist regime
Natalie of the Dixie Chicks simply said at a concert said that they were embarrassed to be from Texas and they were completely shut out by the country music industry. It was incredibly over the top.
Embarrassed to be from same state as George W. Bush is what they said. I think it was that they said it in a foreign country ( England), that caused the biggest issue with people.
I can't stand when bands get political. Waters,Springsteen, etc.
Just shut up and play the music
Yes if that is what an artist wants to include, if you don't like it, don't listen. It's very f'n simple.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.....we are all not going to agree with each other...but what bothers me is how nasty some people get towards others when their opinions aren't the same. Its the artists choice to voice their views in their music and its our choice not to listen if we don't want to and not to bash someone who does.
I can (mostly) let it go it in lyrics. Not every movie I watch is representative of my beliefs either. But if Im paying for a concert (stand-alone, not at a rally) I didnt pay to see you ranting on about it between songs. That recent John Melloncamp episode, where he cut the show short, turned me off from ever seeing him again. The fans deserve better than that.
Mustaine warned US in the song Hook In Mouth about banning, censoring and the PMRC.
Jethro Tull Bursting Out is fantastic! I hope someone bought that set.
Is that a “political” album?
@@BrendonSnyder no, but it's on the counter between the two of you the whole time
That background jazzy music is so dope and atmospheric while you guys are having such a lively conversation, it gives off that Glengarry Glen Ross vibes. All you need is to have it pouring rain outside for that maximum effect. Btw, agree with Anthony on Madonna, after Erotica it is downhill for me as well. I would greatly appreciate it if you can help with providing me the title to that jazzy tune. I need to buy it ASAP, thanks!
I’m not sure if this is what was playing at the time you took note however Anthony was playing the album Youngbloods by Donald Byrd and Phil Woods. 👍
Thanks Brendan! Just heard a bit of it on RUclips and I will definitely be adding the CD to my collection👍
Alice Cooper's POV is what I like to hear. "I'm a musician. I'm hear to entertain. I'm not here to discuss politics. If you really need to hear about politics from your favorite bands or artists, you won't hear it from me. Any artist or band who tells you which side to choose unfortunately is an idiot. I'm all about Freedom - and Freedom is deciding on your own and using your best judgments. Me telling you who to vote for or which side to choose - that ain't Freedom."
Taylor came out and said she did her research and is voting for Kamala. She told her fans to do their own research and make their own decision.
Oh yes I am sure she researched her heart out .
@@RiotAct911It doesn’t take
Much research to determine how horrible Trump is. The fact is, she told her fans to make up their own minds and not blindly follow her.
@@jpcastriannidoesn't take much research to realize she's a phony, though.
You shouldn't base political votes on personalities. Assess how competent the person is too. Kamala can't handle basic interviews. I'm not pro-Trump but you have to offer more than 'Orange Man Bad'. People moan about interviewers going hard on Kamala. She would have to handle global affairs as US President. Do you think Putin, Netanyahu or Kim Jong Un would go easy on her?
As an outside view, Biden has made your country look weak and made the world a less safe place.
@@jimmycampbell78Kamala would also have a whole defense department to work with her on foreign affairs. No decision is made by one single person. I am NOT on the outside and paying attention every day to our 2 choices and imo, Harris is a MUCH better candidate. Experts have already said that Trump's proposals would weaken our country.
Politics has been apart of music for decades. It is good to have other people's views and experiences presented to give us things to consider and think about.
Hundreds of years actually.
Personally, i don't care about politics in the music i listen to...never have.
Avenues of learning, enlightenment have always been through reading.
Did'nt rely on music for learning or lectures through activist lyrics.
Music for me, is almost exclusively about the passion, feeling... emotion.
Essentially cathartic.
Living in that moment...or a nostalgic feeling from a particular song/album.
Politics, activism...almost assuredly, robs me of those components, i love most.
Yes, if its important to the creator of the music then it belongs. And for genres like punk rock its absolutely necessary.
lol you never heard Punk right ? Gorilla Biscuits sang "they saved hitlers c*ck or Dr. Know "fist f*ck", Buzzcocks "orgasm addict"
and yet all of those bands have political songs.
Springsteen is out touch for normal people. Can't listen him anymore.
Haha I still can but it’s tough he’s got a lot of good songs in the 80s that I like, but pretend it’s vintage Bruce singing those songs not the 2020 and on Bruce.
No no no . I’m 46 years old , served as an active duty 0311 Marine, 8 years . I love all kind of music . Two stand out nowadays . Mellencamp amd Springsteen . Two musicians I have long loved and learned their songs . They are now die hard liberals , talking like they know the common man , and trying to steer us into a party that does not want us . I’m a white , straight man , lives in Texas , and works in energy . The left would rather see me dead .. but I still love Thunder Road and Sugar Marie …
Another standout is Todd Rundgren, who pretty much states Trump supporters are not welcome.
Your an ultra Trump nut and you expect everyone else to be crazy? 🤣🗽

Don’t need it music should be politics free 👎👎
An outside perspective, from the UK, how can America vote for a convicted felon who is saying he's going to trample all over your Constitution,... this shouldn't be so close. As to politics in music, I was wary of it when I was younger. Now I'm older, I think there is a certain responsibility to use a platform for good.
That’s the very same question half of the US keeps asking and boggles their minds to no end….DUMPSTER FIRE….😂😂😂
To be fair, his trial was nothing but a political witch-hunt and another attempt to try and get him out of the race because the Democrats are scared he’ll win. As far as “trampling” all over the constitution, that’s done more from the Democrats than Trump ever has, and most of the claims against him are just fear mongering. If was going to do half of the things they say he is, he would have done them during his first term, not wait until a second that might not happen.
The Dixie Chicks spoke out against a George W Bush war policy in London and the Republican party went ballistic and suddenly the "Chicks" were cancelled from radio stations in the U S A. Sounds hypocritical to me.
Don’t read lies the world needs Trump 2024
@@KellyRempel-e2k Convicted felon. He slept with a porn star and cheated on his wife. He talks complete gibberish. Sharks and electric boats?
I don't believe in politics ,.so my point is music and politics make bad connections for sure .
Unfortunately politics are in EVERYTHING
If we only listened to artists that agree with our out look on politics and life in general we wouldn’t have very much to listen to. 🤪 They also don’t seem to understand they are alienating half their fan base when they beat us over the head with how we should vote.
I don't mind politics in music, there have been many GREAT protest songs and albums and songs with hidden meanings throughout the years from many different perspectives but I don't really care for it when an artist (actor or athlete) gets on a soapbox and preaches it or a band (who already sold the rights to their song - or even worse, their estate after they've died) tells a political figure NOT to play their song which just creates division & hate - music should be about bringing people together with love and making our lives better and hopefully leave the world in a better place that it would be without it.
Interesting Discussion.
Nothing like 2 buddies chatting.
It’s real.
Here in Brazil, the same thing is happening. But I think it's important for artists and bands to address this topic in their music. After all, everyone has the right to freedom of expression.
Here in Brazil we have a Narco-leftwing-dictatorship
what did Rush say? "if you choose not to decide you still have made a choice"
the Who "meet the new boss, same as the old boss"
Would be a much better country if the media all the media would just report the news and stop lying and giving their opionions on anything.Just do your research and do some actual reporting
Artists express themselves through their art whether it be music, art, literature, etc. And politics are part of their expression. So if an artist expresses themselves politically and you’d rather not hear politics in your music then that artist is probably not for you. I’ve definitely been turned off by it at times myself by certain artists. And depending on my mood I might want to hear it at times but other times it might be the last thing I want to hear.
Was that Chet Baker playing in the background? Didn't peg Anthony as a jazz guy 💪
No one gives a toss what musicians think really just like no one gives a toss what I think 🙂
Everything is political. Whether you like it or not.
Absolutely not! Some musicians and actors , for that matter, may be good at their craft but may not be too bright or at best ill informed. Vulnerable people who worship their heroes are going to believe their opinions are the ones that matter and follow like sheep. Then you have more ill informed people without their own considered opinion.
It comes down to whether we as a community of people believe in the freedom of free speech or not. I personally do believe in my god given rights. If you are one who does not believe in god, then, you have the right to waive your rights, but not mine. Those artists that express political views should know by now that doing so might have consequences. May tread very carefully, some don't. I have the right to choose whether I will listen or continue to listen to their music should I feel they have crossed my standards of disclosure of their political opinions. So many artists have expressed their political opinions, some ended up to be very positive and the results were good. Some not. It is the artist's choice to express their views in their music or on stage and it is my right to support their views or them or not. If you don't like it, don't listen to it - that's your right!
Rush did it right. They chose the nonpartisan world issues that matter the most to their audience. If more artists can do it like Rush did, then I guess I am fine with politics in music. Ditto with The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Styx, Thin Lizzy and even Pink Floyd. But if you choose a side, you ain't getting a single sale from me, even if your politics are in line with mine.
I came here to hear about cds and music ,not to hear about politics.
A lot of thse artists have become the establishment.
When it comes to listening to music artists and bands I can separated religiously and politics from the music.
Poison is not political in our music, on stage or really even in interviews, however, I may say things on my personal Facebook page. I have people yell at me even for that. I’m sorry, musicians are not just a court jester or a political wallflower just so someone can be entertained and not offended. Sex Pistols, Clash and many 60’s bands were political. More of a social movement, however. If I do want to say something I will. I won’t be muzzled.
You can say wtv you want for sure as long as you don't belittle fans with opposing views. This is happening unfortunately.
It doesn't when it's divisive and attacks the people who are on the opposite side. I despise the artists who are clearly used to push a certain message, basically most of the pop singers and some big bands.
It's interesting because music is a reaction/response to political issues, punk rock for sure, metal music against religion and corruption, rock with the hippies against war.
In my opinion, politics and music are not a good mix. I listen to music and flee from all this real politic. Music is vital for me, politics is not.
Politics are the rules to your life. It's actually the most vital.
Yeah, actually looking forward to seeing who comes out of the 'dumpster fire' on top. Either way, it's not that good for international trade, as both parties have strong tariff policies on imported goods.
Being from outside of the US (New Zealand 🇳🇿) it is, and continues to be, a fascinating battle of political views and ideals.
As an European I'm not going into US politics. I think politics were always in one way or another a part in music. Even not being political is a political statement somehow. For me it's ok being political in lyrics. I don't have to listen to bands that are diametrically opposed to my political opinion. To be clear - they still can be great musicians, but I will not support them by buing albums, going to concerts etc.
I have no issue with politics within music itself. One can choose to listen to an artist or not. However, I do not want to hear political rants from the stage of a concert that I have paid to attend. I come to hear the songs, not your political opinions. Keep your damn opinions to yourself and stop using your platform to spread your agenda. Im looking at you Pearl Jam, Springsteen etc...
Michael Jordan had the right idea when he said something to the effect that Republicans buy shoes too.
I don't mind some politics in music but keep it even keel and/or not preachy. Operation Mindcrime is one of my favorite albums of all time and it had political undertones...but it wasn't preachy just highlighting/showcasing a particular moment in time.
Jordan is known to be a shYThead to everyone ....lol...
The problem with a lot of politics in art (records, films, any medium) isn't so much any particular belief in and of itself, but rather, the obviousness of most of it. For example, the best films to me have a lot of political angles embedded within them that can be inferred from a viewing, but the messages are not necessarily spoon-fed or didactic. Such films aren't talking down to the viewer as though the viewer needs to hear 'the message'. So obviousness to me often runs counter to good artistic taste by virtue of insulting the audience's intelligence. The best art is often (though not always) subtle and most political angles (especially righteous moralistic screeds) go against any efforts to be subtle or clever or even insightful.
Leave the politics to the politicians
Leave the music to the musicians
There would be no Dylan or Springsteen. Absolutely essential to write about their experiences
Dylan & Springsteen have NEVER written about the fact that they are multi-millionaires & live in mansions. They hide who they really are pretending to be blue collar working men while drinking their $1,000 champagne.
Anthony for President!!!! Politics in music no. Anthony in The White House...Yes !!!
Absolutely not. End of story.
"Shut up and Sing."
You see , I make a remark about how I see the left side not interested in me , and I’m all of a sudden a Trump guy . I’ve never voted , but I did spent years 18 to 26 as an active duty Marine Infantry . I can listen to Hank Jr and then turn up Rage Against The Machine . You know why , cause my brothers in Camo would play everything from Jay Z to Slayer , and you could find middle ground in music . There is no fucking middle in politics , there is no political opponents, but now political enemies. Get off your high horses . I don’t agree with telling women what to do , I don’t agree with wide open borders . I do agree with CCR , Black Crowes , Otis Redding , Motley Crue and The Beastie Boys ..
To me it is what the political topic is
Politics has always been part of music and art , I don't mind if it is done as a " general " thing , but if it gets too specific , too in depth then I tune out , no thanks ..,
and on stage rants , f@ck off , play the f2ckin' song and entertain my arse
I believe Tom Morello and Ted Nugent are friendly with each other. If those two can get along..
Using music to protest is fine. It’s covered under the first amendment. Getting violent and burning down the city because some rock star told you it was justified is a criminal act. Say what you want through music just don’t encourage your fans to riot and harm others and their property.
By and large there's a predictability to a band walking on stage with a political opinion. Especially in the UK where it tends to be a socialist right on agenda. I kind of look at the floor and think move on or play a song. It doesn't half make me cringe. I tend to look on bands who spout politics as being a bit thick as they more often than not get it wrong.
Yes. It’s art and art reflects reality. Don’t be afraid to hear an opinion that might be contrary to your own. Everyone is such a snowflake and lacks the courage to hear a different opinion.
I love Ted Nugent and Pearl Jam equally.
But I’m in politics for a living - have worked for both the DNC and the RNC - so I’m not intimidated by different points of view.
Look at john Shafer of iced earth, great metal band & talent artist...Shafer ruined his carrer!! Politics leave that crap out of our music/ politics is soo boring!!!!/ power grabbing tensions ,don't need it!!!
politics is life, weather you like it or not. rant on people.
Eventually if an artist continues to push something on you they will wear you out and lose audience either way. My problem like you both said is age, back in the day I could get appreciate more u2 and everything bono would say and I still do that hasn't changed BUT if its going to take a spot where I could have three more songs and not your lecture then its a slippery slope. BUT I also think now with Social Media artists almost make sure its known how they lean or to be honest I admire the ones who do not make their views known its a very tough thing in todays culture because its almost demanded of EVERYONE to have a view on everything. I also think the public drags alot of people into to. Like they will dig up something you did ages ago and blow it up online and make you have to comment on it. Take Linkin Park as an example. So I dont know much of the bands work, songs here and there I obviously know their lead singer took his life, and now seven years later they are moving forward with a new singer who is female. As expected you get the usual crap from fans or just trolls, saying the band shouldn't move on, or they should change the name since its a new singer (even though the singer was not the founder nor did he name it) but what happens is that someone digs up a photo of the new singer from 12 years ago at a Scientology meeting of some sort, and then demands she speak on it. Now she first of all doesn't have to or owe anyone an explanation on her private life, it was also something YOU dug up, turned out she is not a member but even if she was why is it important? Its nowhere in the music, I have not heard her talking scientology at shows or forcing fans to hear that, so I just think before it was very different, now its news when Taylor Swift endorses someone, or Ted Nugents views are topics on CNN I mean its just exhausting now, I think todays audience and culture is to want to know everything about an artist, ME give me the music thats what I paid for if you want to tell me more, I will listen till it just starts to get overwhelming and I can't tolerate anymore.
No Mellencamp for Antony then 🤷♂️
🤘😎🤘
What’s the music in background?
Avoiding something on purpose seems strange to me.
I think that left leaning artists are elevated beyond what they would be otherwise because the similarly left leaning pop culture press wants to amplify that message
Other than Uncle Ted, Kid Rock, and a couple of others who have little audience anymore I’m not aware of many musicians who back MAGA. So it seems pretty lopsided. I don’t care to hear about politics at a show either but fortunately have views that typically align with most musicians so if I must, it’s tolerable.
Not unless you want to lose half your audience.
Exactly what Weird Al said. And smaller rock and pop bands whose album sales have declined said this, too.
Like Ted Nugent! Used to love his music back in the day. Now I’ll never buy another Nugent album because he’s such an extreme conservatist!
Look up the latest between Eminem and Kid Rock! It's a great example of where we need to go as people.
Pearl jam bushleager
No
I don't mind political in the music if it's done right I don't mind political on the stage if it's done right, however artist like Aaron Lewis and Kid Rock, their political beliefs do not belong in their music when it's that heavy or heavily political. Can't listen to that kind of music never will be able to. I stopped by Kid Rock's music when he became that political. Plus, I don't care for any or almost any of Aaron Lewis solo recordings.
You ended this video with a political view point, telling us to "go out and vote". Should I as a listener ban you now because of your free speech right to express your views? No! Why? Because I like your channel. There was no evil intent behind what you said. And I already voted, so it didn't have any meaning or punch or ill-will behind it (you said it with a smile).
Telling you to get out and vote is not a political view. I didn’t tell you which way to vote. Give me a break 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
@@BrendonSnyder actually that IS a political view... less than half the population even bothers to go out and vote and the left and the right are a lot closer to each other than the news media describes; we're not on opposite sides, most of us align on 95% of the issues, we all favor of democracy over a monarchy or anarchy or a totalitarian dictatorship, we enjoy free speech, freedom of religion (& freedom to not have a religion), consumerism, schools for our children, healthcare for our parents, most of us believe in free market capitalism, supporting our troops & our allies & defending our country which people are still dying to come to work hard and raise a better future for their children - I think the majority of the people in America identify more with each other than we are led to believe by the news, whether for ratings or clicks or to keep us divided & conquered by the real hidden power controlling both sides of the political spectrum.
