- As far as TV sitcoms go, very few have ever been as funny as NBC’s Night Court. The show starred Harry Anderson as magic and Mel Tormé loving judge Harry Stone, John Larroquette as the sleazy (but lovable) prosecutor Dan Fielding, the late Richard Moll as Bull Shannon, the hulking but sweet-natured bailiff and more. Despite its long run, the show took a few years to get going, with cast members being replaced and not one but two of the supporting bailiffs dying in real life. Finally, however, the show’s ensemble started to cook when the late Charles Robinson as Mac (the court clerk), Marsha Warfield as Roz (the bailiff) and the late, great Markie Post as Christine Sullivan, the sweet-natured and lovable defence attorney, were introduced.
From there, the show was a ratings juggernaut, with Larroquette becoming one of the biggest comedy stars of the eighties thanks to his role, which he’s reprising on a Night Court sequel series starring Melissa Rauch as Harry and Christine’s judge daughter. Larroquette won four Emmys in a row for the part (and had his name taken out of contention as not to overshadow his cast-mates).
While not currently streaming anywhere, Night Court has held up a lot better than many other sitcoms of the era and is well worth discovering for those of you who may not have been around during its initial run. Learn all about it on this week’s Gone But Not Forgotten!

The episode where Bull breaks down over Selma’s death always brings me to tears as I know what it’s like to lose your best friend.
Then he found Flo and picked her up and asked Harry, "Can I keep her?" Almost 40 years later and my heart still cries.
Still have the theme song stuck in my head. I loved Night Court back when it first aired. It’s a Sin that it’s not on any streaming service or on Blu-Ray. Maybe it’s rights issue, I don’t know, it better get Rectified sooner than later. Even stations that rerun classic shows, like Me TV, don’t air the show.

Good stuff man! My father James Drake was the Director for many Night Court episodes and other classic sitcoms. He passed away last month and joined the other fallen Night Court members who passed too soon. He would have enjoyed your review 👍

Your dad was doing the Lords work. Making us laugh our arses off and restoring some faith in humanity and helping make NBC Thursday nights one of the greatest events in TV history.

Sorry for your loss. He was a talented person and did great work. Night court was one of my all time favorite sitcoms. They sure don't make quality entertainment like they used to these days that's a sad fact. I'd much rather watch reruns of older shows than subject myself to the modern cesspool available to choose from.

Marsha Warfield’s sense of humor is spectacular. I love her quip @15:47 when asked about being teased because the previous two actors to play her role had died.

Night Court is not forgotten. It was part of NBC’s top rated Thursday lineup in the 1980’s: Cosby, Family Ties, Cheers, Night Court. Possibly the best sitcom block of all time.

And yet, if you ask peeps under, say 20 years of age, they'll proily say they've never heard of it. Night Court went off the air 30 years ago. So, without the internet and the recent reboot, how many would even know about it but TV history scholars

I used to LOVE Night Court. My favorite episode was when they brought in John Astin as Harry's father. I was rolling. "But I'm doing MUCH better now" 😅🤣😂
I met Sean Astin back in 2017, and we talked about his Dad's time on Night Court, both of us with smiles on our faces, and at the same time said, "But I'm feeling much better now." He said his Dad has fond memories of being on the show, and Sean was happy to hear that his father's appearances on there always brought me joy.

Night Court was one show I didn't want to miss. It was just silly enough, just serious enough,
with exactly the right pathos in the right places, to make it a truly classic comedy series.
The cast was well chosen and the stories were worthy. What more can be said for it without going overboard?

@@kimberlywiederhold627I also loved Dan Fielding in NC. John later showed up in The Librarians, a sci-fi / fantasy show with a semi-serious tone which demonstrated his versatility. Give it a look because it has some other great actors including Rebecca Romijn Stamos and Bob Newhart in a recurring role.
By far one of the most hilarious and original shows ever. They do not make shows like these anymore. I never missed an episode.

@@chrismarzarella2106 More of a continuation. Dan Fielding is the only original cast member that is back. The judge is Harrys Stones daughter. The court room looked the same which was cool to see. The first two episodes were on last might. Abby the new judge talked Dan into coming back as she needed a public defender. and Dan did it to help outof respect to his old fried harry who died of course. weird seeing dan being a defender and not the prosecutor anymore. the rest of the cast are new people as those still alive from the old show did not want to come back except for John Larroquette
It was great it really was nice tribute and funny. I love the fact they even kept the score in there just tuned it up .
I'm surprised you didn't mention one of my favorite recurring characters: John Astin as Harry's stepfather Buddy Ryan who turned out to be Harry's real father. I thought their relationship was really touching.
John Astin is beyond awesome. He should have gotten a mention here for sure. He definitely had a knack for making memorable characters. Took me a while to adjust to Raul Julia for Gomez in the beginning, since Astin was SO good as the orginal.

Night Court was so underrated. I watched it from the beginning and all the way to the end. NewsRadio followed in the footsteps of Night Court admirably.
NewsRadio was OK, but nowhere near as good. And that other show about nothing continues to receive unwarranted praise as the most overrated sitcom of its era.

Fantastic retrospective for one of the most UNDERRATED sitcoms in my lifetime if not history.
I had no idea that so many of the original cast had passed away, that alone is heart breaking.

I stumbled into this show in 2002 when I was in the US for a vacation. This sitcomm wa being shown on TV Land. After seeing just 1 episode, I immediately got hooked. It became one of my all time favorite shows
I have a playlist saved in my library on RUclips right now. 86 episodes. Thank you for the flashbacks. Between Night Court and WKRP in Cincinnati, I'll have a lot of them.
I just watched the new premier of the New Night Court,and it's hysterical!. Laughed out loud multiple times!! Still love the original!!
Back when A&E had actual programming, beyond murder and human misery, they would consistently air episodes of Night Court. I was at the age where I was becoming more interested in adult humor, and would watch this show constantly. Seeing these clips awoke long dormant, but welcome memories. I really had forgotten how much I cared for this show growing up. It saddens me that so many of Night Court's alumni have passed. Knowing Markie Post passed at the age of 70 came as a shock, as I'll always remember her as so young and vibrant. This was a wonderful retrospective and thanks for the memories.

A&E introduced me to a few classics that I was too young to have seen when it aired, best channel to have on when I was home sick - Night Court, Magnum PI, Murder She Wrote, New Radio, etc.

I was a young teenager when this show was popular and I loved it! It helped me understand more mature TV shows (just coming from watching cartoons) and helped shape my sense of humor. The casting of most of the characters was incredible, especially Harry Anderson. All supporting cast were also great, but he was the glue that held the show together.
One of mine as well. We're also arpind the same age, as it came on the air in my early teens.
I'm so glad you included the Wile E. Coyote episode. I loved this show as a kid. It was like nothing else on TV at this time & seeing random things like a cartoon character made it so unusual & hilarious.
The magical stuff like this that was on night court and the silly cartoonish characters were what made this my favorite as a kid. It really was so silly that it was perfect for us 80's kids especially the physical comedy bits.
The Wile E Coyote episode was fucking brilliant and mega funny as hell y'all Plus the Mel Torme recurring role and the Michael J Fox one
I never knew this quirky show had so many fans that never forgot what a hidden gem it was. Can't wait to finally see the courtroom again.
My favorite line from Night Court was when Bull said, "People think I'm weird because I understand the words to the song 'A Horse with No Name'."
The two that always stood out for me what when Christine had enough of the Barry Manilow bashing and called Harry up on the carpet by telling him, "I'll have you know that Mel Torme RECORDED an album with Barry Manilow!" Just the look of shock on Harry's face as he turns to Mac and says "Say it isn't so!" and Mac replies, "It's true" is priceless.
And the second one is when it's revealed that Christine is a HUGE monarchist, who lives and breathes everything Charles & Diana--even to the point of having a party and inviting Queen Elizabeth II--who "shows up" for the celebration but is turned away by a distraught Christine (who didn't know HRH was outside).
Or when Bull got zapped by lightning. Or Dan got trapped in an elevator with a gay man and had to overcome his homophobia. Or when Harry found out who his real dad was. Great show with too many memories to write down. Thanks for featuring NIGHT COURT.
P.s. Any chance you might cover REMINGTON STEELE?
I like the one where Harry romances the Russian diplomat. In that one, somebody made a remark about a crater or some flaw on Christine's forehead, and she's obsessed with it, thinking she's ugly for the rest of the episode. Then at the end she gets a note from somebody saying she's beautiful and asking for a date; she thinks it's one of the gang trying to make her feel better and throws it away. Then we see the guy who really sent the note and it's Johnny Carson. That one was great.
And the two-parter where Dan's sister comes to visit is just comedy gold.

Excellent job. When I heard Night Court was coming back, all those memories came back of watching the show. I was totally in love with Markie Post since I was watching The Fall Guy as well. Every actor/actress made Night Court one of the best sitcoms ever. I hope this Night Court lasts, but this day in age is so different. I do have my fingers crossed that it last for at least a couple is seasons.
I got sentimental. These were my teen years. Seeing that must see tv lineup, including the other channels, brought back memories. It was tv’s golden era, before people’s attention was split between the rise of computers. All of the top talent, writers, producers and actors, had grown up with TV. Dreamed of joining its ranks. It was the star that guided every ship. Today’s 2022 world has so many avenues for talent to go to. It won’t ever be the same, where the cream rose to the top, and it all remained in that one place dedicated to the same thing; late night tv.
One of the greatest things about this show was John Larroquette's character Dan. You knew what he was about, but deep down inside he would do the right thing. It was just such a complicated character that was seen as one dimensional at first glance.
Larroquette received an Emmy for "Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series," four years in a row! He put the brakes on receiving additional awards.
So true. One of my favorites is with all the pregnant women where Dan ends up being the coach for a single woman who is a militant feminist. At one point she gets so tired she stops pushing and Dan starts calling out the names of famous womanizers so she will get angry and start pushing again.
I absolutely loved Night Court! So many great moments. As I got older I was shocked to find out Harry was an actual magician. So many great characters
Harry was exactly what the producers wanted. He was a very talented magician and had a tough upbringing. Use to see him at the Magic Castle. He was close friends with the founder of the castles daughter. See if you can find his TV special. His death was very sad to our community, he suffered a stroke not long before passing, they kept the stroke secret

I still watch this show on Laff tv, never get tired of it. I do get sad sometimes when I realize all the cast members that passed away.
I used to watch night Court with my mom every single week. We looked forward to it and it was one of our favorite shows. It was the very definition of irreverent.

I've gone thru the entire show twice, with my first wife before she passed and my second. They both couldn't believe how funny and razor sharp the comedy was, especially for the 80s. Definitely top 5 all time best.
I absolutely loved watching NIGHT COURT. The opening theme, like so many other theme songs from the '80s, was so iconic.

I had a bassist friend who'd practice, always using that theme to warm up, and get the ball rolling. Now hearing that tune reminds me as much of him, as it does of the show.
I’m doing a rewatch of Night Court. I watched as a kid with my parents. So ahead of its time, so on point with lots of real issues we grapple with today. The characters are fully realized, it took a couple years but they nailed it.
I was about six or seven when I began to watch Night Court on Thursday nights, which was in ‘86/‘87. I remember Thursday nights on NBC was so good, starting with The Cosby Show. My bedtime was 9:00, but I always managed to sneak in an episode of Night Court with my sister, who was nine years older than me, and we both couldn’t stop laughing. This was by far the best sitcom I’ll ever watch.
These shows were memorable, and some I can still vividly remember when I watched it as a kid. My sister and I would count down until the show came on.
Thanks for making this video. It also proves to me that what I said was right; this show is at least in the top ten of all time. It’s just sad that most of the cast members are now gone. 😢

When I was a kid in the '80s, I had a little radio that you could tune to TV frequencies and just listen to the audio of whatever was broadcasting. I'd slip it under my pillow so I could listen to the shows that were on after I had to go to bed on school nights. Night Court and Cheers were my absolute favorites. I don't even really remember any other shows besides them.

Oh man I forgot that Harry Anderson passed. I, too, loved this show as a kid. My ultimate "Mull" character though is from the movie 'House'.

A classic and truly underrated show. I love how it used the backdrop of the NY Court System to become a quasi variety show. It always kept the show from getting stale and the cast was just incredible. I thought John Lauroquette was one of the greatest actors of all-time when I was a kid because he literally seemed to be in every movie I watched. I have a list of shows I want to watch with my kids when they get older. This is number 3!

one of the best features of the show was the set. most studio tv shows have sets just built next to each. ie. the upstairs bedroom, the living, basement are all adjacent to one another.
night court had a realistic functioning set. harry's chambers led to the hallway to the court room. the hallway actually connected to the cafeteria and elevator.
I always thought it was odd that the set always looked dirty.

I ignored Night Court for a long time thinking it was a serious Court Room show. One time I changed the channel and landed on Night Court, and heard laughter? So I had to leave it on to find out why there was laughter? Then, I had to watch it! It was so very funny and appealing to me! I loved that program! What a cast ! What a show!
I whole heartedly agree that this is one of the greatest sitcoms of all time. This is one my favourites. I love every season. Every character, main or supporting, has their traits and charms that I just adore. When I was young lad I enjoyed being immersed in the world of Night Court for the half hour I would watch, and it was always a good night when the station I watched played back to back episodes. RIP Markie Post(btw, one my biggest tv crushes), Harry Anderson, Charles Robinson, Paula Kelly, Selma Diamond, Reinhold Weegee, and Florence Halop.
I’m going to proudly mention that my two biggest crushes back when I was a young teen wad Erin Gray and Markie Post. Night Court was an absolute gem. Great content.
And he played the clip of Markie in that dress. hubba hubba. And yes Erin Gray as well. You can't go wrong with those two.

One of my fav shows of all time. I met John Laroquette by chance in Vancouver and I was so surprised to see him, i blurted out....hey....Dan Fielding!!! He said "I am not Dan Fielding, he was a character I played, he does not exist" and I said um..uh, John Laroquette, Im a huge fan of Night Court, great to meet you. He said, "Great to meet you too" and walked across the road.
Since Night Court was pre In Living Color, Bull was the second hardest I'd ever laughed at that point from TV. First being Jack Tripper. And then when Jim Carrey hit, it was all over.

Loved Night Court! Gotta mention that Harry's dad was awesome. Played by John Astin who you probably know best as Gomez Adams in the original Adams Family series. (he's also Sean Astin's dad)

I love Night Court as a kid. Bull was my favorite character. My favorite episode was when they tried to cheer up a Cowboy Kids Show host who was depressed and threatened to blow up the court.
He didn't threaten to blow up the court. He threatened to crush himself (there was a broken air conditioner on a rope).
This show and Married with Children were groundbreaking with pushing the limits of acceptable comedy. Night Court descended into madness in its last few seasons, wonderful madness
And both were absolutely disregarded by their networks😢

Night Court had an incredibly talented cast that kept getting better. They portrayed GOOD NATURED comedy which much of the time had a VERY good moral to it. There were NEVER any garbage episodes but sometimes it takes some time for a series to get into their stride.
I don't know about garbage episodes. There are some people who think the last season (season 9) was terrible. Then there was that joke on South Park about Night Court being lame in its fifth season. Me personally? I like the show from beginning to end, even though my favorite era was the one with Marsha Warfield as the female bailiff (I know before her there were two old white ladies, one of which was the voice of Earl's mother-in-law on Dinosaurs).
@@canaisyoung3601 For most including myself, I'd say Night Court was at its very best and reached its peak from seasons 4-6. The show was on fire during that three year period because now everything came together, though seasons 3 and 7 were still pretty good, but I'd say the final two seasons was definitely jump the shark. When Reinhold Weege left a lot of the magic went with him.
For me , the Mac episodes were a little too dramatic for me. I tended to skip those.
Seinfeld was the same way. The early episodes were kind of boring but once they got their stride look out.
Night Court was the greatest. Stayed up very late to watch it almost every night.
This was one of my favorite sitcoms when I was in high school. Night Court is a very highly underrated show for it's era.
I was born in '84, so I literally grew up with this show, & I love me some Night Court, buuut "...THE show that has become the foundation for TV comedy as we know it today"? One of many, perhaps.

Two of the finest "sitcoms" of all time in my mind are Barney Miller and Night Court.
And there was a final episode. Christine is elected to Congress, Dan takes off to follow her, and Bull departs the planet with two old men from Jupiter.

Yes, of course there was a final episode. The last episode aired episode of any show is the "final episode". But there was no official *Series Finale* to the show. The cast and writers thought they were going to get a 10th season so some storylines were never finished. Did you missed the part where the cast and crew all showed up on set to film the next season episodes and then they were told the show was cancelled?
Besides that, in the episode you're talking about, Season 9 - Episode 21, called "Opportunity Knocks", when Bull was taken by the Aliens it was supposed to be a cliff-hanger to be resolved in the next episode. That obviously never got to happen. You also never find out what Dan was really doing, because his story about following Christine was actually a lie to avoid getting married to the girl he was engaged to throughout season 9. Christine was also showing some serious remorse about leaving her job and friends at the courthouse so they hinted throughout the episode that she may not take the job in Congress.

By FAR my favorite show growing up! I remember in grammar school me and this other kid, every Friday, going over the episode from the night before and we ended up turning like half our class into lifelong fans of the show! And when we graduated 8th grade and we all going our seperator ways, people signed my yearbook mentioning how we got them to love this show! I really miss it! ✌️
This was just the show I probably shouldn't have been watching between the ages of 7 and 17. Thank God I had the opportunity :)

I watched this when I was like 10 years old. Loved this show. Bull was the best! I also loved WKRP in Cincinnati, Barney Miller, Three’s Company, Empty Nest, Webster. Shit I remember all these.

This was one of the only shows my father and I ever watched together when I was a kid . Years later my sons and I watch reruns of it together every now and then and it still holds up .
So very sad that a good number of these wonderful actors are no longer with us (RIP Harry , Markie, Charlie, Selma and Florence)

Night Court and Get Smart stand forever as my top two all time fave sit coms.. I watched Night Court from its very first episode in 84 til it's last. As far as season 1 goes.. the first episode is one of my faves with the way it immediately showed the heart Harry had witht the flip a coin scene which always chokes me up.
Night Court re-runs, every day after school. Good memories. Harry's vinyl collection influenced my love of vinyl, along with the velvet fog! What an amazing show that just faded away, along with the cast. Its the first time I noticed that something like that can happen, to so many talented people. Gone but not forgotten.

Used to watch this as a kid but I barely remembered it, so I rewatched the whole series the past few days to prep for the continuation!
One of my favorite episodes is Day Court! I love all the changes they experience during the day. Especially when Dan couldn’t handle how different cafeteria was and how Roz was actually a day person.
So glad for this. I can’t stress enough how awesome it was growing up in the 80’s. We had the best TV shows and all the reruns from previous decades.

This was easily in my top 5 favorite Tv shows of all times. Night court and the A team, the norm show, all fantastic 10 out of 10 shows! I’ve got every single episode of night court on DVD!
The Norm Show should get more recognition now that Norm Macdonald is gone.
I got goosebumps. Used to love Night Court and would watch it every week. I forgot most of the changes other than Selma passing away though. What a hell of a retrospective and one that makes me extremely nostalgic. RIP to Selma, Flo, Harry, Markie, and Charles.

OMG, what a trip down memory lane. I absolutely loved this show growing up and it is so true that "filmed in front of a live studio audience" absolutely meant something that has been sadly diluted along the way. This was a wonderful look back at one of the greatest sitcoms ever. You got my like and sub. 👍

Every great TV show has had a theme song that you can hear 2 seconds of from another room in the house, and you know EXACTLY what is coming on. Night Court is no exception. You should do a video on opening theme music.

80's had so many great theme songs. You could spend hours on those. Not to mention the action shows like A-Team, Knight Rider, and Airwolf.

I'm 43 and even though as a little kid I Loved These adult type sitcoms like cheers, all-in-the-family, Golden Girls, Fraser, Maude, etc I don't really remember much of Night Court however I did love the John Larroquette show from the mid-1990s. Mr. Belvedere is another TV show that I've recently started watching. Some of the most laugh out loud moments of the show is when mr. Belvedere and the little boy Wesley go at it. It's funny because growing up my much much older siblings used to refer to me as and compare me to Wesley because of how conniving and menacing I was as a child but unfortunately I didn't get it until now.

I loved this show, too. Back in the late 90s/early 90s, TBS used to air this show in the mornings in chronological order, 4 episodes a day. I used to watch them before work.
