  • A Fanny rehearsal, with some chatting with (our producer) Richard Perry. I can't really tell if it's from Fanny Hill or a recording studio, my guess would be Fanny Hill (I always had a tape recorder there). Anyway, we sound happy and relaxed, more like puppies really ... and I would guess sometime second half of 1970. By 1971 we were just too busy, writing and recording, touring and rehearsing ~ so many new experiences! Consider: April, played Fillmore East; May, backed Barbra Streisand live on two tracks in the studio & at the end of the month, Fillmore East; in June, the Tonight Show, etc in NYC and the Kenny Rogers Show in Canada; July, more more more gigs! with Leon Russell repeatedly, VFM with I think Black Sabbath; September/October, more gigs: Carnegie Hall, the Sonny & Cher Show; November - ever more gigs! Atlanta, Nashville, etc. December '71: started recording at Apple Studio, BBC and Beat Club, ended up the year NY's Eve at the Whiskey in LA.
Anyway, at some point we got together with Richard, and you can hear how happy we are. We ran through something Richard said he "loved," and then played something Nicky said we'd run through "once," earlier that day. For a second dry-run, I think this is pretty good! It certainly has the spirit.
I mean, this isn't a work of art but I think it's fun. This is one of the styles Nicky was writing in (I mean, more or less pure rock 'n roll), and it reminds me so much of "Rock Bottom Blues," which adore and which we all wrote together (at Fanny Hill, in the living room - I remember the light!!).
The photos are mostly Linda Wolf, with one on the road Europe - Scotland. The first shot, I focused on the guy at the left because that's Richard, filming! (at USC, opening for Tim Buckley, which we did several times). There are a couple of pics by Bob Riegler, one by Suzanne Witas, and one taken by a fan in Iowa ... thank you all. (none of the talking is edited, this is how it showed up ~ I think the track to "Rock Bottom Blues" will be next:)) xx
