The umpire likely knew enough to wait so as not to cause confusion, given that the ejection would not apply until the play was over even if he did make the ejection motion before home plate was reached. As a newer baseball fan, I don't understand why this is even an issue anymore. They have the cameras and technology to immediately see if the pitch was a ball or strike. The umpire shouldn't even be making these calls anymore.

That was a stupid question to begin with. If it was on the swing, the umpire would have pointed and said, "He offered!", or something similar. With no crowd noise, Donaldson would have heard it. "Personal Strike Zones," no accountability for consistent poor performance, no consequences for unacceptable behavior (petty gripes with players, "stare downs," flippant responses to player questions), etc., etc. MLB has been adopting technology for years (StatCast, instant-replay, super slo-mo, Sabermetrics) - it's time to pilot the use of tech for calling balls & strikes. The tech has been available for years and would eliminate much of the player vs. umpire interactions AND provide accuracy & consistency (which, is what instant replay has provided). Umps will usually not make two bad strike calls during same at-bat. If there are two strikes and it is a ball but close enough and they just look at it, not uncommon to call a strike. Even down to little league is a common practice with umps.
I know I was listening to the twins telecast not sure if you were or not but Justin morneau said that exact thing. After many years of playing and watching baseball etc first time he's ever seen that.

Josh asking the ump if it was a strike or swing and the ump getting pissed is like when you ask you parents a question and turns into to a whole lecture, "yeah yeah yeah"
Daniel, I agree. I’ve been coaching baseball for 41 years this year. I love it when umpires are respectful to players when players are respectful to them. I also love it, in the Majors, when a player swings at a ball and misses it and gets called for the swinging strike and the player turns and looks at the umpire and says “Was that a ball or a strike” that I swung at and the umpire will tell him. When a ball is coming at you 100 MPH your brain has 300 milliseconds to decide whether to swing or not.
Im a big thumbs-upper, and I must say, that was quality. The turn, the execution, the hold, the confidence, just spot on thumbin'. Good for you baseball man
they are not going to touch the ump because just like players they have a union. so at most they just schedule them for games that shouldn't have any real impact on post season play.
Refs in Hockey have unions too... one chirped the other day about evening up a call and was basically fired that day. Baseball needs that kind of accountability...
The entertainment value of these interactions is far outweighed by the outright unprofessionalism and ego of the umpires. Most of the time it’s just infuriating more than funny.

As you said, Kids do Not attend Games to watch The Umpires. So why does any Rules Official escalate an argument with unprovoked Swears? Most Umpires are twice the Age of The Players, so professionalism aside, should be mature enough to Diffuse tensions without resorting to Aggressive Swears. What will Embarrass Umpires enough that they accept that Robots will eventually replace them because their Egos are too Big & Fragile?

Carl Yastremski of the Boston Red Sox did pretty much the same thing in the 1970s. The report from the catcher was that the umpire asked Yaz why he did it. Yaz said "it doesn't matter, you can't see it anyways". This was about 1979 or so. There was no bad language in those days.

Robotic strike zones wouldn't provide us with this high quality entertainment, keep human umps!
But make it so players can eject umps too. If the umpire crew is exhausted, fans will be selected to ump
Never get rid of Angel Hernandez? Idk about that
The entertainment value of these interactions is far outweighed by the outright unprofessionalism and ego of the umpires. Most of the time it’s just infuriating more than funny.
Its entertainment for us, but really frustrating for the players I imagine.
Yeah the entertainment of costing players at bats and entire games
The real story is that his covid-19 test came back positive rounding 3rd base. The Ump had to eject him.
or Rocco could just replace Donaldson with another player. It sounds like you think the only way to exit a game during it is to get ejected.
🤦♂️🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@bootybandit9915 someone doesn’t get the joke
That’s halarious
@@OneHunnitNoCapStannitOnBidnisz How is it fake news bro
Why is our "professional" MLB Umpire swearing with an F-Bomb ?
@Captain Quint many? really? like is that more than half? and yet you still watch these entitled, emotional snowflakes? also judging people on how they look too, eh? well you're acting like the fat member that hangs along side of my balls! and phily's right, law enforcement, rules enforcement, whatever... should always be the standard and must act in a manner void of any appearance of prejudice or bias. surely as a captain you can understand this.
Captain Quint i understand, but you've got to admit that Sports has Decades of Rules Officials' mistakes being infallible while Umpires' egos prove incredibly fragile that they insert themselves into outcomes of the Game.
There needs to be some kind of challenge ability for bad Ump calls. They seem to be happening more and more frequently.
These umpires gotta get over themselves. People don’t watch baseball to see the umpires.
people don't watch baseball period according to the numbers, this is one big reason why! catering to the emotional fat wad behind the dish when we have TV strike zones.
Exactly. Look at the exaggerated gesture he uses to toss him. Not just a simple gesture but a full body "I'm in charge here" extravaganza.
This is one of the reasons i stopped watching
I like that Josh made sure to drag some chalk in with the dirt on his way to home plate to make it even more dirty. Extra nice touch!
I don't throw my middle finger up when I'm driving anymore, I just give them the ol thumbs up.
My wife once said, "Baby, you can't give old ladies a thumbs up." I just starred at her.
Thumbs up. Better than the middle finger. 10/10
Refs not allowed to curse at him like that either. Just the fact that Joe West and Angel Hernandez are still allowed to ump is mind boggling.
Awww, does Josh have thin skin or something, poor baby!
Carl Yastremski of the Boston Red Sox did pretty much the same thing in the 1970s. The report from the catcher was that the umpire asked Yaz why he did it. Yaz said "it doesn't matter, you can't see it anyways". This was about 1979 or so. There was no bad language in those days.
hjh
Not gonna lie, I usually side with the umps. This time, not even close. This ump is a tool.
Right. He was itching to toss Josh. Staring him down out of the box and when he rounds 3rd. Realistically, JD could have backed down and waited until getting in the dugout to celebrate, but that's not in his DNA. He went out on his terms and fired the team up. Too bad that didn't carry through....
Exactly. I usually don't like Donaldson's crap, but this time he's justified. Ump is a tool.
The cardboard fans must’ve been pissed
I'm 100% with Josh on this. Sure he was petty, but the strike calls were horrible and that ump should be reprimanded. Especially for walking past the plate for the stare down after Josh hit it out. He showed clear contempt and that's not acceptable for an official who is paid to be impartial.
