An Afternoon of Southern services at Lewes, heading around East Sussex, United Kingdom. Trains include:
- Southern Class 313s
- 313/2 - Built in 1976/77 - Refurbished from 2010
- Southern Class 377s
- 377/1 - Built in 2002/03 - DC Only
- 377/3 - Built in 2001/02 - DC Only, Built as Class 375s
- 377/4 - Built in 2004/05 - DC Only
- Gatwick Express Class 387s
- 387/2 - Built in 2015/16 - AC & DC (Operated by Southern)

Southern Class 313/2s were all withdrawn from service in May 2023.
🚄 INFORMATION KEY
Train Numbers - e.g. 43032 or 800110 - These are train numbers which are specific to that train. No trains can be numbered the same. Locos are 5 digit numbers where the first two numbers are the class of train e.g. 67010 would be a class 67. Multiple Units are 6 digit numbers where the first three numbers are the class of train e.g. 390154 would be a class 390. Click Here to learn more

Headcodes - e.g. 1F32 or 5M00 - These are used by the railway signallers to determine where trains are on the network. Every train within a region has a specific four code ID. Click Here to learn more

Set Number - e.g. WB64 or NL04 - These are semi-permanent loco hauled coach formations which are kept together for formalities. The first two letters usually indicate the maintenance depot responsible e.g. OC is Old Oak Common, LA is Laira. The number indicates the rake number.

Great video, the driver of 313213 at Lewes was my dad, he drove the tour from Eastbourne - Ore, Eastbourne to Lewes and finally Newhaven Marine to Haywards Heath.

Being someone that lives locally in Seaford, for those wondering why you are seeing two class 377/3 & 377/4 units working in multiple doing Seaford - Brighton and vice versa, this is because it is football match day with Brighton & Hove Albion playing at their football ground at Falmer. Great video @StarlifeStudios Rail Videos

Lewes railway station serves the town of Lewes in East Sussex, England. It has five platforms and is on the East Coastway Line, 49 miles 74 chains from London Bridge via Redhill. Train services are provided by Southern.
The station has a café and there is a taxi office on the main forecourt. There is a small taxi rank outside.
A partially local station of mine, it’s a pretty beautiful station honestly
I’m going to miss the 313s
They served their purpose well and were given a life extension after London Overground came into existence. I will miss them too.

Nice video - Lewes was an amazing station when the 313s were about, great variety of trains and most of all they weren’t new ‘modern trains’ that have a high pitched traction motor sound! The station sees Aggregate trains through to and from Newhaven Aggregates Yard so you get the sheds and an occasional 59 through there! Although the station now only has Electrostars operating passenger services, so it’s a bit boring but Electrostars are decent overall! Anyways when the 508s go that will be the end of the PEPs from passenger services! At least 313201 is being preserved!

Thank you! It’s a busy station and despite the low variety (it’s lower now the 313s are gone!) I found it enjoyable, some of the football fans made me laugh though 😉

Didnt see those Gatwick Express 387s in a while
Some of the Gatwick Express Class 387/2s are on hire and working alongside with the Southern Class 377s since the Class 313s went for scrap.
I believe the 4 387s were cascaded to southern a while ago to cover coastway, they were there before the 313s were retired.
Gatwick Express is a brand name of Southern and has been since 2010. So technically, all the Gatwick Express 387s are 'Southern' units.

Hi GreatEastern, I have a plan in place to make my videos become more recent. As I have said previously, I have a full time job and I just don’t see the date of the video as factor of whether it’s interesting.
I understand that,but if some less knowledgeable people see this video they may think some trains in the videos still run and will want to try and see them

The 313s are shown as Hastings via Ore and Eastbourne. Shouldn't this be Ore via Hastings and Eastbourne?
Thats a good question! The 313s did run to Hastings but they passed Hastings and Ore before reversing at Ore Up Siding and then running back to Hastings. Quite a confusing setup. Thanks David.

Can someone explain to me why SEAFORD has eight carriages ? When even with THREE IT WAS HALF EMPTY madness
The trains were strengthend, probably because there was a Brighton and Hove Albion game on, and their stadium is close to Falmer.
When Brighton and Hove Albion play at home, GTR strengthens its East Coastway diagrams to 6 and 8 coach trains.
8 coach workings primarily to Eastbourne, Hastings and Ore with the occasional 8 coach down to Seaford. Which on a side note can't go above Notch 2 of power between Newhaven Harbour and Seaford as they'd exceed the Current Rail Index.
6 coach workings primarily to Seaford. Again, restricted to Notch 2 between Newhaven Harbour and Seaford.
Additionally, to this Southern run a 6 Coach Shuttle between Brighton and Lewes Calling Only at Falmer in both directions. This was typically operated by a 6 coach 313.
