Phantom of the Opera was inspired by the 1910 novel by Gaston Leroux which was later turned into a popular musical adaptation for the stage and screen. The song was written by bassist Steve Harris who is the primary writer of most of Iron Maiden songs.

Metal was very popular in the 80s but bands like Iron Maiden were not considered mainstream. They had a huge fan base without the benefit of much radio airplay. Essentially metal was for outcasts and we were proud outcasts 😁

And we were definitely not punk and would have hated to be associated with anything punk!

@@langdalepaul i was the same. but that said, the hints of punk in early maiden made them incredible from the very beginning and the biggest draw was they, like metallica, had zero airplay and they thrived. i wasn't into punk and at the time didn;t like those in the punk scene, but these days, i absolutely understand what they were about and in retrospect, we weren't all that different.

Phantom Of The Opera was used in a 1988 UK Lucosade commercial, with then athlete Daley Thompson running towards the camera. Not sure if people got into Maiden on the back this, but it may have piqued a few peoples interest.

Maiden have their heart in classic prog rock bands like Genesis (70s era), UFO and Van der graaf generator, combined with Sabbath, Zep, Elvis and Hendrix. Search the progrock genre. You will have tons of emotional rock music to save any day for the rest of your life. Over all its all called rock n roll. Love and peace to us all. Up the Irons!

Paul really did this song Phantom of The Opera alongside Iron Maiden absolute 💯% total justice, Paul's voice was absolutely brilliant and amazing ever. I am a huge great fan of Paul Di'Anno ever since. Rest in Peace Paul, will be deeply missed (1958-2024)🙁😢😟🙏💔

    Wow, this is early maiden!
1980 I believe when Paul Di'anno was still the lead singer before they become huge with Bruce Dickinson as the frontman.
They are a true British legacy of heavy metal and have so many epic songs.
You will Love 'Wasted Years' - 'Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter' & 'The Evil That Men Do'

Loved the cat intro! Phantom of the Opera is still one of my favorite Maiden tracks. I am also very pleased you will be doing the Killers album, it was my introduction to Iron Maiden and I love it. Thank You!
EDIT: I agree 100%, Phantom is a masterpiece. Unfortunately most people have never heard it. I have been trying for a few years to get some other reactors to do it. 👍

Drummer Clive Burr had that 'swinging' style of playing drums... he made a huge impact on Iron Maiden's early sound. If u listen to the demo of 'Transylvania' for example w/ the previous drummer Doug Sampson, compare it to how Clive Burr played it... Burr made it swing fast! Even current drummer Nicko McBrain plays 'Transylvania' differently (as well as 'Phantom of the opera') live.
Bruce Dickinson (vocals) remarked that he wished that Clive Burr could have stayed on longer... Nicko McBrain was a better drummer when he replaced Clive Burr in 1983 for their 4th album ('Piece of mind') ... but Burr had a definite sound and style that was hard to replicate.
Tragically, Clive Burr was diagnosed w/ MS after 2000 and passed away in 2013 (R.I.P.) but we have some of his performances on video, thankfully.
Iron Maiden have never got the fanfare that bands like Metallica, Guns N' Roses, Queen, Def Leppard, AC/DC, or Bon Jovi got for some reason... Metallica crossed over w/ 'Nothing else matters' that brought in the ladies... Guns N' Roses had "Sweet child O' mine" and 'November rain'... Queen had Freddie Mercury, and "Bohemian rhapsody'... and 'Another one bites the dust' for pop fans... Def Leppard had 'Pour some sugar on me'... 'Love bites'... Bon Jovi got "Livin' on a prayer"... and 'Wanted dead or alive'... AC/DC got 'You shook me all night long'... and 'Thunderstruck'... All hit singles that permeated into the pop realm and yielded multi-platinum hit records.
But Iron Maiden, despite hit singles like 'Run to the hills'... 'Wasted years'... 'Can I play with madness?' ... 'Wasting love'... they never reached audiences outside their fanbase.
Judas Priest had the same problem... hit singles like 'Breaking the law'... "You've got another thing coming"... 'Living after midnight'... but never got past higher than the double platinum sales mark.
Dio had 'Holy diver'... 'Rainbow in the dark'... never got past double platinum sales.
Saxon are such an underrated heavy metal band from England... but they never broke the commercial sales mark... Neither did Motorhead...
All these bands are so iconic in the legacy of classic heavy metal music, but they never quite made the impact that Queen's 'Bohemian rhapsody' did in 1975... Maybe it was a blessing, because it gave the bands a devoted, hardcore fanbase that kept them going through times when metal music was not 'in fashion'...🤘🤘

To be fair, much of Di’anno’s lyrics weren’t very inclusive for women, and appealed mostly to hormonal teenage boys! Fortunately, I was one of them. 😂

This is pretty epic. Iron Maiden barely got any airplay during the 70s and 80s. So a non metal person never would have heard it on the radio during that time. Says a lot about their popularity with little to no airplay

I do agree but Maiden was never radio played so many people bought shirts and didn't know a song from them in the 80s but my God eing there from the beginning means I'm old lol it was magic, seeing the British metal Invasion that inspired bands Like Metallica 👍

Di'anno's Iron Maiden was my Iron Maiden. I bought the first album when it came out, saw them live at my city hall, their first album tour. I met a couple of the band members at the side door entrance. They signed a black & white photo of the band for me. That fitst album & Killers were the best albums Iron Maiden ever made in my opinion. In fact after Di'anno left the group, to me they became just another metal band. That punk/metal sound had gone because Di'anno had gone. Great always to hear Phantom lol 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧

Both of these are great songs. You'll find with Maiden they do a great job of balancing all instruments along with vocals so one is not overpowering another. I have to mention that Phantom of the Opera is so much better LIVE. The guitar solo is even better live. (ruclips.net/video/t5jaRipA5_M/видео.html)

Phantom Of The Opera was probably Iron Maiden's most well-known song during the 80s/90s although it had nothing to do with the quality of the song or people liking Maiden. It was used to advertise Lucozade on UK tv, so an entire generation of us Brits grew up knowing the song without realising it was by Iron Maiden.

@@Rowlph8888 The Trooper, Run To The Hills, Hallowed Be Thy Name and Aces High were more well-known to rock fans, but Phantom Of The Opera was more well-known to the general public because it was played on TV in the UK every day for years.
