Not only was EVH one of the most skilled guitarists in rock history, he was also one of the most influential. The first VH album sounded like nothing that came before it, largely because of Eddie's insane riffing and soloing (some would say he's the man who popularised tapping).

Eddie may have been THE most influential rock guitarist in history, second only to Hendrix. If you think about how he was considered the best guitar player for so many years back in the 80s, and how his style literally changed the way guitar players played from then on, it's clear he was extremely important to the rock and metal scenes back then. Even if you didn't listen to Van Halen as a band, you probably still had some admiration for Eddie as a guitar player. It's crazy to think he's gone already. Just devastating to rock fans everywhere.

I’m a 15 year old zoomer who gas been into rock music for 2 years. Last Christmas, I received Van Halen I in vinyl as a present from my sister. I played it and my life was just changed ! Since them and most importantly during the lockdown ( in france about 5 months ago ) I have been singing his songs every day and Van Halen was def what I listened to the most during lockdown. This evening I update my Instagram feed one last time before I go to sleep and what do I see...”Van Halen dead, age 65, throat cancer” ( don’t smoke guys ).
I bursted into tears 😭. Van Halen is one of my top 10 bands and he is one of the reasons why I’m starting to learn guitar but now I’m learning guitar for him !

Good to hear younger people get into them. They were huge, and really popularized the L.A. style. For so long the New York scene dominated American rock, Van Halen really changed that (though the Doors were also a huge band from the LA. scene before Van Halen, but that's a different style).

I bought Van Halen I in 1978, I was a senior in High School. It was on 8-track, played it continuously that summer as I drove around with friends in my '68 Chevelle. Nothing brings me back to my teenage self faster than a song from this album. So sad to hear of his passing. Was able to see them once in concert. Couldn't hear for a week, but it was well worth it.

Eddie Van Halen and his band are inextricably linked in my mind with my first visit to the USA in 1984, aged 15. It made an enormous impression on me. ‘Enormous’ being the operative word. Enormous meals. Enormous cars. Enormous hairstyles. Enormous record shops. And in one of those enormous record shops I bought ‘1984’ by Van Halen and ‘Born in the USA’ by Bruce Springsteen. MTV was a revelation (although I went on to hate it) and the video to ‘Jump’ was on constant repetition.
So one evening my parents and I go to this rather swanky bar-restaurant (people wore suits, it was swanky as far as I was concerned). I was suitably attired in my Journey baseball shirt and Doc Martens, hair starting to edge down my back. Amazingly there was a jukebox in the place and to my delight I found that one of the songs on it was ‘Panama’. I got out my nickels and dimes and once I’d worked out which was which, dropped a few in the slot and proceeded to play it 12 times in a row. It was rocking my youthful world, let me tell you, perhaps less so the other diners who were giving me dirty looks from every corner of the room. At this point I seem to remember starting to headbang.
    Thanks for the memories Eddie.

During my lifetime it has always been normal to think of the most influential and creative musicians as people who died decades ago. The giants of their genre, who raised the stakes, who paved the way. But there was always that one guy who was equal, or even superior, in terms of talent, innovation and influence, and that was Eddie. Hendrix, Bonham, Robert Johnson and others earned their place in the history books before signing off at a young age, but Eddie made his mark already with the first Van Halen album. After that, he continued as a living legend, decade after decade. Until now. A momentous loss, even compared to Bowie, Lemmy, Michael Jackson and others who have passed in recent years. As for his prodigious ability on the guitar, let´s not forget that he was also a very fine keyboard player.

I really felt this one, as much as I did when Rory Gallagher and Johnny Winter left us, maybe more. Mammoth/Van Halen and two bands I was in all played the same parties, local venues, and shows back in the day... Grazetti's was the one where I knew for sure they were going to make it out of all of us. Eddie was cool, always fun, and light-hearted but you could still see he was serious about his music. We weren't besties or anything but we, our bands and others, hung out together at times. I liked Eddie... he was a good dude.

A true legend and an inspiration for millions of musicians Around the world. Not only for his playing. He was a master when it comes to guitarsound. The sound on the debute is still the best ever. When i heard it back in the days i Said to my self this is how a Guitar should sound, fantastic.
Yesterday i played the first four albums in a row and just listen to the guitar and adored him.
    Today Edward is gone. Strange😢😢

Van Halen has always been the soundtrack of my life. At 11yrs old I went through my cousins album collection, spotted an album that had 4 cool guys on it put it in and it changed my life forever. That album Van Halen's debut album..... since then I have collected, basically toured lol and got my hands on anything Van Halen...... Didn't matter who was singing be it Dave,Sammy or Gary it was the music that inspired me....... the melodies, the shredding, the riffs, the harmonies and the solid rhythm section..... this band had it all heavy metal, hard rock, AOR, punk, country, soft rock listen to every album and you'll hear all those influences....... EVH you were an inspiration to not only me, but to millions who had the privilege to drop that needle and experience a pure guitar prodigy RIP EVH hope you and all the other great guitarists are rocking out in heaven

This is truly a sad day for one of the few people that re-defined the instrument. His talents as player, innovator and inventor has forever changed the landscape of the electric guitar and the entire Hard Rock genre. He has arguably produced more "disciples" of his style and technique than any other modern day guitarist.
Despite his popularity, he led a very reclusive life and because of that, I understand that his decline remained shrouded in speculation. Good on him for doing so and passing peacefully with only his family in attendance.
For us fans, he left a packed library of recordings that will continue to inspire guitarists (and musicians) for every generation to follow.

Me and my mate bought tickets to see Black Sabbath on their Never Say Die tour of 1978 at the Apollo in Glasgow, unknown to me and my mate, Van Halen were the support act, never had i seen anything like it, or a guitarist like him, absolutely out of this world. Still a hard pill to swollow RIP Eddie you'r memory will live on.

I saw all three iterations of the band during their last tours. I saw The VH III tour, The Balance tour and the tour with Wolfgang on bass. All three were great shows and I can’t believe I will never see another VH show or album ever again.
