I think a large part of why the Season 4 cliffhanger with Cliff rated so highly was because most viewers tuned in waiting to see what the jaw dropping moment would actually be since the previous two years had ended with jaw dropping moments. By the time the end credits had rolled, those 28 million viewers had already been recorded. Even if they were disappointed by what they'd just seen, there were still 28 million of them. Likewise, I believe the previous year's finale ended Number One because viewers were tuning in to see what the producers would come up with to match the hype of Who Shot JR? I'm assuming this is most watched at time of airing, and if so Dallas didn't gain the major viewership numbers till after the J.R. got shot. Being as the following season averaged the most viewers that year I believe. Makes sense

The most famous was Who Shot JR back in 1980 remember there was no social media, internet or cell phones. It was a phenomenon. The most shocking cliffhanger for me, the one we talked about all summer was Dynasty The Royal Wedding aka The Moldavin Massacre. It was a stunning act of violence. That other daytime soaps and many night time dramas have copied over the years. I was 19 years old in 1983. Sadly we live in a world where acts of violence are no longer just on television programs....

Most of these cliffhangers made us come back for more. I can never get tired of them.
