It’s crazy that you can see how much streaming changed the game. My family started watching Supernatural in 2005 and all through high school, I was one of the only ones who watched/talked about it. Once it hit Netflix, it took off big time.
It isnt just the streaming. I think the youtube content that discusses it also play a huge role. You can always tell a show is popular when you can do a youtube search and there'll be many channels with high sub numbers doing a review of some sorts on that show, for every episode. Those channels also consistently release content when ever there are some news or teasers of new seasons or prequel and such. They help people who dont understand what's going on in the show, understand them too. I mean if it were up to themselves they dont gey a few things they might even give up watching the show.

I loved seeing friends being in the list long since it’s sunset. It’s like when nothing new or fancy is on TV, people always go back to it. I love that show.
What is really crazy is how much things kept raising and lowering on the list once streaming really kicked off in a big way...the list was so inconsistent and shuffling, it showed the difference big time.
If anyone is still confused about whether or not streaming has truly and profoundly affected the way we consume 'television' content -- this is a solid demonstration that it has.
Think it also has to do with newer series only having like 10 episodes per season. Because of Higher budgets per episode etc etc. So it rises when its the main show when the new season drops and repeats that process every year
@@wiehanvanwyk8701 I can see that argument. But at the same time, GoT and Friends and others have been done for years and decades respectively, yet they're still in the top 10. Shorter, higher budget productions are definitely responsible for the peaks, I mean did you SEE GoT shoot from nothing to 50 billion in a month? Lol. I had never been attached to any TV series before until GoT. How I wish Game of Thrones made it to at least Season 10 and ended differently. Nevertheless, I'm beyond grateful to have witnessed one of GRRM's masterpieces brought to life on television.
I love the fact that, even 18 years after the sitcom's final, Friends is still in the top 12 most searched shows... Just goes to show you how timeless and unique that show really was.
Every week a new episode of Game of Thrones came out the whole entire world was talking about it, speculating what would happen next, who would die.. It was the most exciting time to be watching TV ever.
Exactly! That was one of the joys if it which is why most people hated the last two seasons. Not for the story itself but the bad and rushed execution. Everything that happened in these two seasons could have been explained more over several seasons. There were so many more stories to tell and the audience was there for it. It's so sad to think about what could have been. You just had to be part of it to fully experience it. Such a shame.
Glad to see Vikings on the top for a while , It's such a great show I can see myself coming back to this series many times in the future ❤:: The subtlety Fimmel used to portray one of the most courageous Viking legends proved his worth time and time again.🤗
The way that shows stayed on longer in the beginning and how the lines just change like crazy as it got closer to 2022, you can tell how much streaming services totally changed the way how we watch TV and how TV shows are in general.
You can really see the point in time when everyone started getting into streaming services and watching more television because of how fast the positions start to change.
I've literally just finished watching game of thrones for the first time. Glad I didn't have to wait for each season to start. Loved it. It has its plusses and minuses.
The spike in recent years is probably connected to house of the dragons in relation to game of thrones. This is, after all, google search results and not really showing what in particular was "watched" It might even be talks about grrm and his books
This is amazing data - shows the cultural shift so well. Early shows gained and held solid interest, but now it is all trends. People hear about the new show - watch and move on. The amount of movement in order in the 2nd hald of this shows it perfectly.
It's because of streaming. Netflix in particular who drops all the episodes of a show all at once so there is no sustained period. You binge and then you move on
I don't think its that. Newer series firstly have a lot of CG and bigger budgets per episodes so you only get like 10 a season. then people move on to the next thing until the new season comes out again. Older TV shows didn't work like that
nah it's the video creator's fault. They switched the criteria in the middle of the video. First half is overall views of all time, second half is google searches in that month. Can't compare those two at all
One of the difficult things to show with this, is the increase in people googling things since the inception dates on the chart. I wonder what friends numbers would have been like if it was similarly as popular in the 2020s.
Things I did not know and just learned from this… 1. Lost really was a BEAST in its day. The most consistent number one for years (before GOT) I guess I should finally check it out. I’ve not seen one episode! 2. Friends did not want to give up being on this list 3. Apparently Sex In The City rose from the dead more times than the walking dead in the Walking Dead 4. What is that La Casa Show about? Where did it come from? Why hadn’t I ever heard of it? Apparently I need to watch it. 5. As much as folks rave about the Sopranos it wasn’t on the list for very long or consistently 6.I got teary eyed when I saw True Blood on that list RIP Nelson (Edit: NelSAN) Ellis
Everybody watched that show before streaming came along. It’s funny how we actually had to watch TV shows at a certain time on certain channels during the week. Streaming really revolutionized our entertainment consumption.
It’s interesting how stable the lists were for about half the video, and then how chaotic it would get for the second half. Shows the nature of the people now.. binging and then hopping on the next show that’s “trending”.
Searches aren’t inherently good or bad. I think i searched it once just to find out wtf people were talking about then also went somewhere to shit on it. So yeah…. Kind of like now. Ha.
Lost was ahead of its time. With incredible character development and arcs that marvel any show past or present. Its impact is felt in productions of streaming and way audiences consume entertainment media to this very day
This gives us a perfect example of why, despite the ending, GoT is probably the best and most favourite series ever made. Not many things have the capacity to become a global phenomenon and turn into an actual franchise. It's on par with Star Wars, Harry Potter, Marvel/DC, Fast& Furious when it comes to popularity.

Two global trends are visible in the chart: 1-penetration of the broadband internet in the world (accelerates in 2007-8) 2-that of streaming services from 2015-16. Some series climbed up the list briefly, years after they ended, once they got into and out of Netflix (such as Friends).

Also, TWD was always releasing new stuff...and still is. So it makes sense that it's still constantly being searched. Same with GoT since House of the Dragon news was coming out
Lost was a landmark, similar to GOT. Lost being the first to reach 500m and GOT the first to reach 1B. Imagine, you grew up watching Lost, then a year after it ends, GOT comes out. Damn, TV was so good.
Everyone was watching game of thrones. Got me out of a speeding ticket one night. Cop asked where I was going in a hurry and I told I got off work late and was trying to make it home before Game of Thrones started. Dude straight up gave me back my license and registration, and apologized for the inconvenience. Astounded.
I recently have been watching a channel that dives deep into the fan theories and lore of LOST. After having a much better and fundamental understanding of what was going on I rewatched the show. I must say that the writers knew what they were doing, far more than the backlash they got with such a subpar ending. That show was lightning in a bottle.
This is a testament to how monumental of a show LOST was. Its absolutely crazy to me how people hardly ever mention it anymore. LOST is one of the best shows ever created and I think one of these days its gonna get a massive revival and only then millions of people will realise what they've been sleeping on!
@Trabsol When I say talk about I don't mean the mondain conversations people have about a show's plot. I mean people using it as an example of excellent writing, recognizing it's significance and it's revolutionary role in the landscape of television. Shows like The Sopranos, a show also known for revolutionizing tv, for example, still gets mentioned more in articles, discussions, essays, ... LOST doesnt really, at least in my experience.
I've watched the entire series twice. It got better the second time during the god/devil era, first time round was a tad confusing. Probably time to watch it a 3rd time now aha
@@RemyUFOThere have been alot of good shows, even revolutionary shows since, you can't keep talking about the same show forever. No matter how important it might be.
It's not so much about people literally 'talking' about it, as it is about recognition. And yet a show like The Sopranos, which is older, is still mentioned and celebrated often (as it should be). When is LOST ever mentioned or celebrated in that discussion? Hardly ever, right? At least in my experience. And both shows played an absolutely pivotal role when it comes to revolutionizing television. I'd say more so than a show like Breaking Bad. Yet I'm sure the legacy of that show will remain steady. I feel like LOST has slipped away from peoples consciousness, yet not that long ago EVERYONE seemed to be captivated by it for 7+ years. Another great example is FRIENDS, it remains super iconic and is celebrated widely and frequently, almost 20 years after its airtime. Why do I get the feeling that that doesn't happen to LOST? Is it just me? I'm genuinly curious. However, I do believe that LOST will get a huge revival, like some older shows have gotten over the years mainly because they're made available on popular streaming services.
Yep Lost is in my top 3 series and I can't choose between then so it's probably joint 1st. Absolutely epic series. Watched it weekly as each episode released. Part of my childhood growing up and will never forget it.

The ending wasn't the problem. The show started going down after season 1 and from season 3 onwards it got more and more awful.
Lost's ending isn't bad. It's just that the majority of TV watchers did not follow the entire show and tuned back in towards the end and so were severily confused. The fact that there was and still is a lot of misinformation about the ending out there, does not help.

You binge and then you move on
Well maybe it's because now there is a lot more big budget new shows being made so people move on to the next big thing

I also expected at least Scrubs and House MD.
(what the hell is that 'the o.c.'?? I don't even remember the title!)

Not me, they'll ruin it.
I want them to remake season 7 and 8 once Martin finishes his book. Make the show legendary once again.

I miss LOST and GoT. I remember when literally everyone talked about them. LOST was considered and still is considered, one of the greatest TV series of all time and it's a shame it doesn't get spoken about that much anymore. Same with GoT, despite its ending, is still a masterpiece. Shame it has been tainted. Just look at those numbers!
If you haven’t seen Breaking Bad you should prioritise it.
@@criert135 I have seen it, and Better Call Saul. And yes, i also consider them masterpieces. But my comment was about the two popular ones of their time. As amazing as BB is, it never reached the peak of those two shows, unfortunately.
@@GreenFalcon926 In terms of popularity maybe not but it was significantly better than both those shows in my opinion

Friends making a random comeback in 2017 after being out since 2010. Iconic
Probably because it was added to Netflix. Id say.
Winter is coming 😅😅 The ending was a shame but overall GOT is a great show.
Greatest❤
Sons of Anarchy was one of the most popular tv shows from 2010-2014. How was that not even on the list? Inaccurate.
It wasn't that popular online.
Fringe wasnt at the top? it was 1 of the best tv series for me.
It’s crazy this the vampire diaries was popping out so many time even after five years that it ended in 2017 imo it’s one of the best nostalgic, comfort, and at peace shows to watch
Damn i guess The Walking Dead was still one of the most popular shows towards the end despite the internet trying to make you believe otherwise...
I was also totally surprised
The gap that Game of Thrones left to other Series in 2019 😱 It really is the Best Series in the World 👌🏽
No one is talking about how Vampire Diaries was in that list for more than a decade even during the streaming era
Lost was such a great show for its time despite the last season. Always good to re watch still to this day
Last season is perfect just like the rest of them
Lost It was produced in 2004. At that time, there were not this many series now. Also, the viewer should know that Lost changed the face of American drama and all the features, creativity and ideas that we see now in series were taken from Lost.
The fact that TWD and GOT were the only thing people talked about for 2 years and these tv shows were top 1 for years is nuts!
I love TWD and GOT 🖤
Both shows would’ve been fckin *_PERFECT_* had they not fcked up the endings, TWD didn’t have a terrible ending, they just dragged it out far too long.
@impulse15yrago18 TWD is technically still not over. It has to tie up a loose end with a spinoff show (Rick & Michonne), and has another two spinoff that are completely unnecessary 😂 The first is airing and I can't bring myself to watch it
@@aaronmoen7402The Negan and Maggie spin-off is honestly good 🤷🏾♂️
i dont think the spinsoff of TWD are unnecessary.... i think at the end of the megan/negan & Daryl & Michonne/Rick all will find together for a big final, because in everyshow is the same enemy.... CMR :)
Quite surprised The O.C was so popular, yet no one outside of America has ever heard of it's existance while Friends was a household name globally.
Came here for this comment. I was obsessed but I can’t quite believe it stayed in the top 10 a whopping five years after it was cancelled for low ratings…
Yea, from what my mum told me, it was the biggest show of its time. And the rating were averaging about 13m per episode. It’s known to be the blueprint for the likes of Gossip Girl, a look into the life of rich kids and their drama.
I remember downloading episodes online, the day after they aired on Fox. It was definitely popular to me, and shaped the year 2003/2004 for me.
It was quite a hit in Europe too. Man the drama when Marissa died was crazy!
Here in Brazil, The OC was a great hit! I used to watch it when I was a teenager and all my friends also loved it
The most popular/most watched series according to IMDb rating by number of ratings is 1. Game of Thrones; 2. Breaking Bad; 3. Stranger Things; 4. The Walking Dead; 5. Sherlock; 6. Dexter
Yeah horrifically wrong. It would be more like 1. GoT 2. Twd/Friends/Lost/MASH
@@smallbudoo I didn't include Friends because it's hard to even call that a TV show.
Lost, what a great TV show
Didn't know TWD was consistently one of the top shows, even surpassed GOT at times!!!🤩🤩 All time favourite ❤️
surpassed only because got took so long to drop new season
@@Mike-in1eh Yeah, that's a point! I was kind of wondering how that happened 😂

Yeah fr, now we have recycled slop on every streaming website
Everyone was watching game of thrones. Got me out of a speeding ticket one night. Cop asked where I was going in a hurry and I told I got off work late and was trying to make it home before Game of Thrones started. Dude straight up gave me back my license and registration, and apologized for the inconvenience. Astounded.
GOT is incredibly boring. It was impossible for me to finish the first season.

Game of Thrones peaked at 99 billion searches on April 2019 and then dropped to 1 million again. What a difference an ending can make?
Lost!! The show that changed television forever absolute masterpiece!
Nope that's the Sopranos and the wire
@@dharshanr3732 the wire season 5 is a dip down in quality a lot and I've yet to watch the sopranos, but lost has bigger impact on tv than the wire
Name of the Channel please
Would like to know as well
@@amandafeitosa9728 Probably the LOST Explained Channel? He really does an amazing job tying up loose ends and explaining the mythos of the series
What I find incredible is that while some series come and go, Friends has been there for 20 years after ending.
