I am in the exact same position having bought a surplus window w/o an inside trim ring (at least it has a screen) & I also made an oversized trim ring we had laying around fit on mine.
Yep, I had the same idea you did to a “T” but seeing you do it gave me the confidence I needed to install my new window in our V-nose snowmobile trailer door. It also reminded me to grab the semi-trailer foil roof repair tape for the inside edge :-)
