  • Here we go guys. My first video review. Please provide any feedback you can in terms of bettering the image or sound quality of these things. I hope you guys enjoy this and hope this video shines some light on why the Prophet X has replaced the Korg Kronos, Kurzweil, Roland FA-08 and others. Call me crazy...most people do.

    This is actually a really good video. I was hesitating between the x over the quantum.... but I am tired of diving into too much synthesis while composing should be the main focus, thanks a lot for this review EverettDudgeon 138

    Everett, one of the best Prophet X videos I’ve seen! Excellent job! Your video was the catalyst for my ordering an XL - should arrive in a week or so and I can’t sleep! I went a little crazy and am also on the backorder list for the Novation Summit keyboard version and these will be the only two synths I will have.
    Thanks again! If you were located any closer to me I’d buy you a couple of beers! So here’s a cyber beer on me 🍺!

      Thank you so much for the kind words and Cyber Beer. It really means a lot. The Novation Summit and Prophet XL are going to be one of the best synth combos you can get. I can't wait to hear/see some videos from you to hear them both sing together.

      That’s great to hear about the winning combo; that was my thought too. And if I do post a video of making them sing, I will refrain from singing myself so that no listener’s eardrums will be damaged beyond repair 😁

    Dave Smith should have comped you that synth! (Come on Dave.....) Your suggestion was spot on. You gave me a different perspective on the use of this beauty. I can see how the PX lends itself to devoting more time to composing music than programming. The "X" just moved up a notch on my wish list. Love the review ;)

    I was really into sound design, you know looking for that perfect sound to compliment the new song you're writing? But i wasn't finding ANYTHING that I truly loved. So after a couple of sequencers, korg kronos keyboards, roland systems and even arturia matrix brute I would expensively find out that they all had there place but would never fit in. So I was afraid to buy anything else, really costly mistakes! After researching info I ran into this by accident and decided to take a chance. It really looked cheap at first and not enough knobs and dials I thought. But when I turned it on the first time I was in tears. When I heard the sounds coming from this synth I lost it. My wife couldnt find me because I had been in the studio for days/nights and never came out. This is 100% professional prime rib. It'll never get old and now my other boards are collecting dust like you said. lol. Thanks for the video, it was nice to hear someone like me feel the same way.

      EverettDudgeon138 yes sir!!! I've always wanted one, either Prophet 6, 8 Rev2, or even 12...now X!! I just bought the Moog Grandmother and that thing has a totally different sound than my Model-D Re-issue. Still want that DSI sound though!

    • @EverettDudgeon138
      @EverettDudgeon138  6 лет назад

      Techno Dad Yeah that Model D sounded fantastic. Lots of great analog gear has come out recently. I hope to see Arturia finally do a poly synth next year. What’s fantastic about DSI though is that none of their synths sound or function exactly the same. Each has their own place and function so it makes it hard to buy just one. At this point it’s exciting to see what they’ll come up with next.

    • @TechnoDad

      Dude, these patches sound great! Do you sell these? If not, I think you should look into that. I was looking at the Prophet X as a centerpeice to a live looping rig. I produce house music and I am looking for a great piano sound, and also something that I can split and play along with the other Analog synths I have to take care of all the layers in each track. I really feel the PX is the synth/keyboard I've been looking for as it has a great sounding piano, and I can combine samples with the synth engine. I loved what you did at 6:35!! Too bad I just dropped a LOT of cash on a new 4K editing setup for my RUclips videos. Oh well...Maybe in January...

    • @EverettDudgeon138
      @EverettDudgeon138  6 лет назад

      Thanks so much. I was looking into selling some patches for my P6 a while back but since my job loss everything kind of got put on hold. I can't really officially sell them as I would likely have to declare that as income which may interfere with my E.I. process. So once I find something stable I'll likely get into selling patches.

    Thanks Everett, really nice and honest review from a very personal perspective. As I said before , saving my money now ...... ;-). One question: I thought I heard you say that the (poly-)sequencer does sent MIDI notes out to your DAW?

    • @EverettDudgeon138
      @EverettDudgeon138  6 лет назад

      Gerard Havinga I believe with the newest firmware for the REV2 the sequencer and arpeggiator both send midi out now, I think it might also be for the X with the newest firmware. I usually just sync it to the DAW for master clock when doing a more classical oriented piece or sync it to the Tempest.

  • @PhilAndersonOutside

    I'm looking to completely dump all DAW and libraries. Too much of a pain in the ass to program, endless hours sifting through sounds, clicking mouses, etc. And I do know how to program a sytth, and have for many years. I'm not looking to create the sound of a full blown arrangement, but am hoping I can replace my workstations with it for the most part. As soon as I can come up with the cash...

    • @EverettDudgeon138
      @EverettDudgeon138  6 лет назад +1

      It's completely different in terms of it's sound but incredibly similar in terms of it's interaction to a lot of analog gear. A bit reason I was put off by a lot of my workstations was the amount of menu diving. This really allows you to sculpt your sound in a hands-on fashion. What I hope is that the PX sets off a new trend of knob per function interface samplers. The last one we had was the Nord Wave but Nord has no interests in synths anymore it seems and Kurzweil is focusing more on stage pianos rather than synths so maybe the PX might open the flood gates and we can get Hi end and even Low end sampling synths.

It seems easy for you as I’ve watched your videos but others complain that it’s a mess. Everyone seems to trash the X as a bad sampler due to Tim shoebridges review and just in general. But it seems simple for you. I’d love to see an update from

    I’m pretty much ready to pull the trigger on a DSI Rev2....... Understanding that the Prophet X does a LOT more...... what would I be giving up sound wise if I went with the X over the Rev2 on the analog synth sounds? The Prophet X looks and sounds REALLY good! Great demo and explanations! 🤠

    • @EverettDudgeon138
      @EverettDudgeon138  5 лет назад

      Honestly I had my eye on the REV2 as well but after playing it a bit I didn’t like the Curtis filter that much and the DCOs sound a bit sterile...although you can program them to drift a bit. As far as what you would be giving up...analog oscillators...that’s really all I can think of. Prophet X has two effects per layer, REV2 has 1, Prophet X has touch sliders, REV2 does not, Prophet X also has stereo outputs for each channel and I don’t believe the REV2 does ( I could be wrong though) and personally I think the SSM filter sounds miles better than the Curtis but that’s a matter of taste.

    • @ezm69
      @ezm69 5 лет назад

      EverettDudgeon138 I really appreciate the response. That’s exactly what I wanted to know. 🤠 I love the sound of both, just have to think now if I want one or the other, or both? How do you manage the lack of polyphony for pianos Everett. I'm planning on getting a Prophet Xl on October 26th, my birthday. However, I noticed that you mentioned the workstation (Kronos)... Though I'm partial to the Yamaha Montage or Modx over the Kronos, they all have at least 128 voice polyphony whereas the Prophet x has 16 voice polypohny... How do you work thru that for a piano composition Everett?

    • @EverettDudgeon138
      @EverettDudgeon138  3 года назад +1

      32 voice mode works perfectly for me as the voice stealing is implemented quite intelligently and adding a good reverb helps as well. I prefer the Room Reverb or Hall Reverb to give it a miced up piano sound and ambience.
      I also use this mode for organs as well.

    what's the chance(if any) of Sequential making a desktop version of the Prophet X, or do you think they would've done it by now? btw, are you looking forward to the Waldorf Iridium?

    • @EverettDudgeon138
      @EverettDudgeon138  4 года назад

      I think Sequential might be done in terms of the PX. I highly doubt we'll see a rack/desktop version which is sad but I am actually interested in getting a PXL to accompany my PX so I'm not too worried. We MIGHT see this type of technology in a drum machine but I doubt it. Plus Roger Linn is working on a new drum machine anyway based around MPE so Dave and company might not even bother with trying to do Tempest 2. I think Sequential's next synth is actually going to be a lower tiered 4 voice DCO based poly synth (like half of a REV2) and then next year we might see a the Pro 3 technology of VCOs and Wavetables inside a full Polysynth.
      As far as the Iridium it sounds great. I wasn't a fan of the Quantum but the Iridium has a good form factor. Personally I think I'd use it more as a vocal/guitar processor with it's granular and particle type aspects.
      Personally I really wish Kurzweil or Nord would do a desktop module with their sounds inside it more than anything.

    I’m going to get one myself as I think the sound creation could be exceptional, like having my old Emulator 2 / 3 back but with a serious synth engine. Just wish the filter was multi mode. Like you I have the Prophet 6 and had the 37 (which I sold for a Model D but am replacing with a subsequent) So I’d interested in your view on how they overlap (or not)

      Well I was thinking about replacing my Sub 37 with a Grandmother but honestly I like the fact the Sub has patch memory. It makes recording with it a lot quicker. That’s not to say I don’t think non memory based synths aren’t great...I’m looking into some ARP Odyssey modules and possibly the Moog Matriarch but it’s nice to have a Moog that you can just quickly record if you have an idea as opposed to spending time patching.

    • @Bigmojo75
      @Bigmojo75 5 лет назад

      EverettDudgeon138 . If I’m honest it was a mistake. I needed to raise cash for the D and thought (was advised) the Sub37 was quite similar, but it’s actually very different and the patch memories are extremely useful. I find I get better ideas on hardware and have become addicted to the Prophet 6 in that regard, with the sequencer for scratchpad ideas. The Prophet X might be exactly what I’ve needed for years though, plus more with the granular angle, then being able to take it on the road. Thanks for the video. It’s great and is one of the only ones that highlights what I would want to use it for. (Sorry to hear about the job... happened to me too, shitty)

    • @EverettDudgeon138
      @EverettDudgeon138  4 года назад

      To me the Quantum feels like a jack of all trades, master of few. It has things the PX doesn't, Wavetable engine, direct sampling etc but I feel the PX has some benefits over it. For one, a huge library of built in samples ready to be manipulated right out of the box, Quantum doesn't have any pianos, choirs, guitar samples on board from what I'm aware (which always shocked me since they included a ton of PCM samples in the much cheaper Blofeld). The sampling space is also much larger on the PX and with the new support from SampleRobot for the PX, you can get incredibly intricate with the editing. Also the signal path isn't true stereo. The signal is collapsed into mono as it goes into the filter and then converted back to stereo. The PX has a true stereo analog filter with both right and left channels. Of course there is also the fact the Quantum is fixed at 8 voices max while the PX can go from 8 to 16 to 32 in different modes.
      I do think they compliment each other though.

      My dad and I had the Kronos for a while now and neither of us really got that into it. I hate large screens on synths especially touch screens and while it’s certainly capable I found I was just spending more time menu diving rather than recording or doing anything with it. As far as workstations go I would still say the Kurzweil is still king but even with them I’d rather get a SP6 over a Forte. But for me because the PX can just generate sounds so quickly and you can modify those sounds so fast that I don’t see the need for a lot of bells and whistles workstations have anymore. I can just program a quick on board sequence or two, sync the PX to my DAW and hit record and sequence drums, string runs, guitar riffs on the fly. Of course you can also control it with an external midi sequencer like a Carbon or something should you require more intricate and extensive sequencing.

      coyotesynth It’s not meant to cover a workstation or be a stage piano as I said. There’s plenty of options for those. As a composer it allows me to record what I need faster as opposed to menu diving. I already have a Roland V Piano for my dedicated piano sound and if I need a dedicated Rhodes or Wurlitzer sound, I’d look into the Crumar 7. I guess my mentality is I’d rather have a bunch of different synths that specialize for specific things rather than one that’s a jack of all trades but master of few.

    I have a Kronos X 73, Motif XS6 and Nord Electro 4D. I bought all of them used over the last few years (they're all like new) and I have a total of $3700 in all of them, less than this synth costs new. the only new synth I've bought in the last 15+ years is a Prophet REV2. I'm more of a player and not so much into composing or recording. this does seem like a fine machine and no doubt has features that other instruments don't. but the only instrument I've ever paid this kind of money for was a really nice Hammond B3 (which I ended up selling to a church.)

    • @EverettDudgeon138
      @EverettDudgeon138  6 лет назад

      chieftp At this point I’m not sure I’d get an actual Hammond B3. It would be more of an ego trip or a nice to have than a practical instrument compared to one of the digital stage organs like a Crumar or something. A real B3 would be like a real Rhodes or Mellotron. Too cumbersome to move and too time consuming to record.

    • @chieftp
      @chieftp 6 лет назад

      actually, I'm mainly a Hammond guy and nothing has yet to match the tone of a real Hammond or the effect of a real Leslie. 4 bars and percussion, yeah - it's pretty difficult to tell in a mix if you're just doing jazz. but when you pull out the upper drawbars, that 1' just sings on a real Hammond like it just doesn't on any clone.

    • @EverettDudgeon138
      @EverettDudgeon138  6 лет назад

      chieftp I think that classic Hammond sound has more to do with the Leslie than the organ itself. Run a Crumar through a real rotating Leslie speaker and it sounds just as good. Same as if you ran it through an actual Marshall amp for that John Lord sound or 100 Watt Hiwatt stacks for Emerson. A lot of those “classic” organ sounds we adore off records were more to do with how the organs were processed and amplified rather than the organ itself. So many assume Emerson used a B3. He actually used an A100 I believe.

    • @chieftp
      @chieftp 6 лет назад +1

      nah - night and day between a tonewheel organ and a "clonewheel." Keith Emerson had a C3 (same guts as B3/A100) and an L100 (that's the one he rode like a horse and stabbed and stuff.) I've actually played a Crumar mojo through a 3300 Leslie. I didn't think it sounded that great. there's also a huge difference in the way B3s sound depending on the vintage. about every 5 years or so they made slight changes in the components, so they all have a different flavor. a real Hammond actually sound better through a Leslie effect (neovent for example) than most clones through a real Leslie. I've tried Nord electro and a numa organ 2 through a Leslie - not even close to the real thing. I've been Hammonding for almost 30 years so I guess I pick up on the differences...sort of like different people look at something and don't see the same thing.

    I heard you can upload prophet 5 sounds, does that mean you can turn the knobs in real-time as if you were controlling or playing a real prophet 5?
    Or is just samples of patches made and you can select them and play them, but not modify them

    • @EverettDudgeon138
      @EverettDudgeon138  5 лет назад +1

      It’s both samples of raw oscillators as well as samples of the original Prophet 5 patches. Since the Prophet X is using a filter based on the SSM filter in the Prophet 5 you can certainly emulate the feel of a real Prophet 5 with the interface and of course take it so much further with the PX’s onboard features.

What made you choose the prophet over it?

    • @EverettDudgeon138
      @EverettDudgeon138  5 лет назад +1

      Brian Nzuwah Well a few things
      1. I’m familiar with Sequential’s U.I. I knew where most things were before I got it out of the box.
      2. The Quantum didn’t have any useable onboard samples out of the box to experiment with. Why they didn’t include the PCM samples from the Blofeld I have no idea.
      3. I found the Quantum to be trying to be so many things at once it lacked focus. It was trying to be a virtual analog, a sampler, a Wavetable synth etc. I find synths that tend to so that feel like incomplete workstations. If you are going to have everything in there, why only have 8 voices? Why only have bi timbrality? May as well get a Forte or Kronos.
      4. I hate touch screens on synths.
      5. The Quantum collapses the signal to mono to run through its analog filter...the PX has two stereo filters that you can modulate Independently which is perfect for the stereo samples and things like pan spread.
      I honestly don’t think I’d be able to have scored the films I have with as many different styles that I have with the Quantum. It would have fallen into the “more programming less composing” scenario I was running into with workstations.
      I’m actually seriously considering getting a Prophet XL to accompany the Prophet X. That’s how much I love it.

    • @EverettDudgeon138
      @EverettDudgeon138  5 лет назад

      I’m not sure what it is but it seems some users are having difficulty with sample import while others are having no issues at all. Sequential has updated the OS and while there was an initial bug with sample import it has since been fixed and on the Sequential form people are sharing Mellotron samples, Behringer Neutron samples and others. I myself am doing some Fairlight samples and there is a user on the Sequential forum that created their own mapping software which has more features than 8Dio’s Beta one.
      Personally I think those that are having difficulty with the PX are likely overlooking something cause if it was a faulty system then everyone would be having their machines “go to hell.”
