    🌟 About this video:
    So one day, I got thinking about what is the best selling fragrance right now across different countries and how to work it out... I'm not sure I've entirely succeeded here, but this was the best method I could think of to give a "global snapshot" of what the best selling fragrances are right now. Here I present lists of the top 10 biggest selling perfumes for 10 different countries according to Sephora's website, but was each country's website truly showing the biggest selling fragrances?
    From the research I've done around this topic, I've come to the conclusion that best selling perfumes lists are very unlikely to be accurate given the amount of information for collation with multiple different sources. I think most best selling lists will be very limited in the retailers that they capture or the fragrances that they monitor, which will highly influence the results. In fact, I questioned one creator's blog of the world's top 10 best selling perfumes and she blocked me for asking questions about her information sources, so I think that says it all... basically no one knows...
    Please let me know what you think of these perfume best seller list snapshots for Sephora 1st September 2023 and whether you guessed your own country's top 10 perfumes of the moment if it's here...

    I agree with you , I think Sephora is making up that list to sell fragrances, I live in Canada and being a fragrance collector, I never run into people wearing those fragrances, most people here have never heard of Armani prive , so there is NO WAY 3 are best sellers . If you live in rural areas it’s a way to get these fragrances without driving 2-3 hours to a city. But still not that many people are ordering these expensive fragrances, especially blind buying at that price ! They probably have too many sitting in the wear house and hope people order of the list !! From what I smell I would say , ysl black opium, poison girl , ysl libre , Valentino Donna , good girl CH , Lancôme le belle , etc trust me …. We do not have a lot of bougie people here, 😂 🇨🇦

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  11 месяцев назад +2

      Yes, those were totally my thoughts, I found Canada's list totally unbelievable 😂 I guess it is what is being purchased that day/week though, not what people have purchased overall or what people wear. I feel like I should give Sephora some benefit of the doubt but yeah, it's unbelievable 😂 those are what I smell here on people too, there's so much lveb about. Those and Cloud! Thanks for watching 🥰

      @shannonvienneau 11 месяцев назад +2

      Yup I agree, east coast of Canada and I smell black opium all the time people have raved here about that one since high school and I hate it 😂right now Dior actually is just like a meme so I think it’s a little trendier at the moment but yeah this is not what I would say would be a top sellers list a true one I should say.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  11 месяцев назад +3

      I definitely think Dior seems a lot more popular and actually a lot more likeable than Chanel for most people! ☺️

      I'm from Poland and I also agree with that. I've never heard of many of the scents on this list. Moreover, fragrances such as Clean Reserve Saugaro Bloosom & Sand, Chloé Atelier, Lady Milion Royal, Aqua di Parma Cipresso di Toscana do not have any reviews on the Polish Sephora website. The other fragrances mentioned have at most a few reviews. And real bestsellers such as La vie est belle have 170, Black opium has 124, Carolina Herrera Good girl has 130. So it is absolutely impossible that the fragrances indicated in the list are bestsellers. The only fragrances on this list that are at all known are Chanel Chance eau Fraiche and Mugler Angel, but I also don't think they beat the real best sellers I wrote about above. So I think the whole list is fake.

    I loved this video. I am a German living in Canada. I know Chanel is quite popular here however Chanel is not available at the Canadian Sephora. I think that’s the case for many countries. That’s why it doesn’t show up in the bestseller lists.

    Excellent research and I’m inclined to agree with you regarding how this plays out with Sephora. It is a store known to put emphasis on certain brands so there may be something to your theory that an agreement was reached. I also take into consideration that a lot of the stores, at least here in the US, only provide testers for certain brands in store so people may not purchase others because they can’t.🤷🏽‍♀️ I also see Sephora as a store that caters to younger less seasoned noses and Chanel may be seen as that stereotypical “old” fragrance house. Who knows. But I find it quite interesting again how marketing and in some cases unconscious bias do influences choices. Have a great weekend!

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  11 месяцев назад +2

      Yes, I think you covered everything there, that is a great analysis of everything that could be going on here. I think the demographic using the Sephora website is going to be quite select. When I think of Sephora in the UK, I think it mainly people who are really into beauty that use it and people with more money, so that makes the results here skewed and might explain the Tom Fords being in the top 10. The lack of Chanel could be due to the age of the people buying for sure!
      I agree, not having testers for stuff really changes what people choose in store. I don't think most people are comfortable blind buying in stores, that's why people visit them in the first place.
      Thanks for your opinion on this! It's insightful. 🥰

      And then you have people like me who only buy perfume online and never from Sephora.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  10 месяцев назад

      I think there is a really big split with online buyers and in store buyers, there's clearly overlap, but people tend to do one or the other. Or browse in store and then buy online as it can be cheaper.

    It would be interesting to look at the most popular high street department stores in each country. I think a lot of people still buy their fragrances from a counter in department stores. I agree with you that the top winner seems to be more of a sponsored choice than a truly popular choice.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  11 месяцев назад +1

      It's really odd and a little disappointing isn't it? I did look at the best sellers like that in the UK, I looked at 8 other stores, but I thought I'd make this video instead as I thought it would be more universally appealing. I totally agree that this needs data from more stores to be more relevant 👍 thanks for watching as always 🥰 have a fab Sunday 🥰

      @@dr.claire.perfume Oh, I think Sephora was more relatable to people. Just idly wondering (can't turn off my researcher brain) about other stores. I don't live near a large Sephora and my Ulta doesn't put out tester bottles. My only place to experience fragrances - department stores or ordering samples.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  11 месяцев назад

      That's really rubbish that Ulta doesn't do testers. Do they do quibble free returns if you don't love something at Ulta? Do they expect people to buy a whole bottle to try something?

    I'm from Poland and the bestsellers in our country really shocked me!! No one is actually even talking about the majority's these fragrances and I don't know any people who actually like them. Chanel is the only one I would expect there and maybe Angel as well. If I had to guess the bestsellers, I would expect Good Girl, May Way, L'Interdit, Libre, Idole, One of the Chance versions from Chanel, LVEB, maybe Prada Paradoxe, Armani Si and Miss Dior

      Yes! I know some of these lists shocked me, I know they are a snapshot not overall for a long period of time, just what was selling on the website that week or month, but still, they were really unexpected! I would have guessed those fragrances that you list for most places as those are what you see advertised, what you smell on others and also what you see talked about on RUclips too! Hi Claire, Sephora in Canada doesn't carry Chanel, so I am thinking, if this is the case with some other countries, that could be the reason there is no hint of Chanel on the top-10 list. Thank you for another great video!

    I live in Canada and agree that the list is likely influenced by what is available at other retailers or even exclusive to other retailers vs exclusive to Sephora. I have no idea how brands decide that but you do need to shop around a bit to find everything here.

    Wow, Dr Smith! I was so impressed by this video! Thank you so much for your effort to bring us this info. 🙂 I learned so much about fragrance pertaining to retail sales, apparent country preferences, etc.
    When fragrances appeared on these best selling lists that I'd not considered seriously before as a collector, my first thought was to check for more data on Fragrantica. It appears Fragrantica users do not necessarily like all of the best sellers. That's another interesting angle, I think: fraghead preferences vs the preferences of those who buy trending fragrances at retail stores like Sephora. I'm sure you could think of similar content to make via Fragrantica data. Although, sadly, you'd not be able to parse out country or regional preferences.
    Thanks again!! I'm sure I speak for so many when I say I love your channel content! 🦋🧡🦋

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  11 месяцев назад +2

      Thank you ❤️ Yes! I definitely think there's a split between what the general public want from fragrance and what they choose as opposed to what people who love fragrance want and what they choose. Marketing has a huge effect on the general public and established brands tend to do very well with sales.
      Pulling out Fragrantica data would be fascinating. I'm amazed that Fragrantica haven't done that themselves. There would be endless articles for them to write! 😂
      Thanks for watching and for your lovely comment 🥰

    Hi Claire, incoming from Croatia, your southeastern Europe market😂. I didn't do any research,but from what I can detect is that we are still rocking the La vie est belle, Good girl, also Versace crystal noire and Libras all sorts. Zara is very popular with perfumes, Red temptation can be smelled often. (I know it's not BR540 since we don't have so much money😄). Also,my daughter is a teen,and she adores her Victoria secret mists,more fruity and sour and also her friends. Best regards!🍁🍂🧡

      Yes, I bet if these best seller lists took in Zara fragrances, red temptation would be there 👌 and if you look at RUclips videos and what people what, videos on Victoria's Secret bodymists always do incredibly well and get lots of views, so that makes a lot of sense! Thanks for watching 🥰

    Forgot to mention but availability is also a problem. Even though we are next to the USA, Canada gets less brands and offer than in the US and we sometimes have a delay with releases… What surprised me is that we can only get Kayali through Sephora here, so I would have expected more from them in our top ten.

    • @dr.claire.perfume

      Yes, I think Kayali are online mostly here. They were in stores in Boots but I feel that in store here they are exclusive to Sephora now. ... I'm Polish-Canadian and lived most of my life in Canada. I looked at the Polish top ten and realized that I have never seen a single Acqua de Parma, Guerlain or Chanel in a Canadian Sephora. Come to think of it the men's section is mostly stocked with Montblanc and Dior and new releases. If I want a designer I'm better of going to Shoppers Drug Mart or The Bay. Better selection, better price and better loyalty program. Only reason to buy any perfume from Sephora is if I want something more expensive and don't want to drive up to Toronto or blind buy it online.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  10 месяцев назад

      I'm really not sure these lists are very likely to be the true 🤣 I am not sure Sephora is being entirely transparent. But yes, same here, the Sephora stores are solely in London, hundreds of miles from me, and if I were buying online, it would unlikely to be from Sephora as they are expensive. It was the only store that I knew existed in so many countries though so that's why I chose it. I think doing this video has shown me what utter rubbish bestseller lists are in general, they are biased by which stores / websites are sampled and what they stock. There's no way to combine lists from different stores without detailed sales breakdowns, which of course I don't have access to. I'd love to be able to study this in a more accurate way! I knew it was suppose to be a “your skin but better” type of scent but I’d seen a million of those in the past and it never seemed interesting. But I went out and bought it recently and WOW😳 it’s incredible. Everyone should try this out. It’s not floral. It’s not woody. It’s not spicy or sweet. It’s not cooling or warm. It’s not soapy. It’s nothing and everything at the same time. The best words to describe it is innocent and the purest form of clean Iv ever smelt. It’s there on my skin but it’s not at the same time. I'm from Brazil! I'm loving your content and binging a few videos! The Sephora website doesn't sell Chanel here, but they do sell Dior. I find this list interesting and I have some theories...
    I never tried any of those on the list, because we have here a variety of very strong nacional brands of perfume and the 'common folk' like myself don't usually buy fragrances from the Sephora website -- it's a very boogie site indeed selling imported and very expensive items to people looking for 'traditional/ estabilished scents' (just my opinion) -- maybe thats why the best sellers on the list are 'old'...
    I don't have any imported perfumes and I'm ok with that! I love my collection, it's much cheeper, much suited to the tropical climate, much to my taste and my appreciated! Thanks for the content! 😊

      Thank you ❤️ I think Sephora is pretty underused here, we only got the brand a few years back and it's seen as an expensive place to buy from. I've never purchased from their website. I really only chose the brand as it was seemingly the only one available the world over.
      I can understand how these won't be the best sellers in general for sure. It's interesting that Sephora carries Chanel in some countries and not in others 🤔 I'm sure the local fragrance industry is alive and kicking in Brazil, it makes sense to make fragrances that suit the location and climate 👌

    Hi Claire thanks for this interesting breakdown. I am always curious as to which perfumes are loved by various places around the world.
    This list below was generated by a few Australian retailers. Sounds right when I look at it but I think this covers the 2021/2022 most popular sales so things may have changed slightly this year.
    1

    2
    Coco Mademoiselle Eau De Parfum Spray
    3
    Baccarat Rouge 540 Eau de Parfum
    4
    Super Amber Eau de Parfum

    8
    Flowerbomb Eau de Parfum

      Thanks for the list for Australia! That's really interesting! ❤️
      I think the thing that strikes me about a lot of these bestselling lists is that what are they including and what are they excluding. It's strange to me that Baccarat rouge, a fragrance costing many times many others and not widely available multiple retailers would sell more than others that are cheaper, much like some of the fragrances on these Sephora lists. I think assessing these bestseller lists in magazines etc really shows that ultimately people publishing them need to be more transparent about what these lists actually measure and what is and what isn't included. Thanks for watching 🥰

As we used to say tho: garbage in, garbage out. I’m a little suspicious of the integrity of Sephora’s data; they have ulterior motives I’m afraid. Still cool tho. I don't think it changes the big picture much, but some brands are available only in Sephoras from certain countries. Also, since new perfumes were many times best sellers - release dates of new perfumes for different countries can be different (I've heard people complain more than once that a fragrance wasn't yet available in their country) and I also think the selection of products from certain brands might be different from country to country (didn't check this last info though).

    • @dr.claire.perfume

      Yes I find that musc invisible very hard to believe 🤣 I agree I think Chanel might be something that people don't buy online as much as there is never any reason to as it's not really ever or is rarely discounted. Thanks for watching Lala! Have a fab Sunday 🥰

    I wonder how much time of year has influenced this like, for the UK for example... Vanilla 28, Tobacco Vanille, Good Girl feel like autumn/winter fragrances. I'd like to see this list again in late spring 😊

      @dr.claire.perfume  11 месяцев назад +1

      Yes!! That's true! I also wonder whether those are the fragrances that Sephora wants to push this autumn? 🧐 I'm not sure I entirely trust that these are their bestsellers. Thanks for watching 🥰

    This was FASCINATING, Claire! Very interesting idea to set you apart. I love that so often your videos include an extra level of research. Like you said, you are seeing a snapshot of a particular day. Out of curiosity, I looked at the US bestsellers as of Sept. 10, and the list has already changed significantly! I would love to see this seasonally. Or even the unisex list. There are many other countries listed that allow you to filter to Bestsellers... Portugal, Sweden, Mexico, Switzerland... maybe you could do a Part 2? Excellent work!! 👏👏

      Thank you! Yes! I have been checking to see how much the lists have changed and some have changed a lot, others not so much! I am really not sure how accurate these best sellers are, I'm putting a lot of faith in Sephora to be honest with what is actually selling and not just listing what they want to push... I may do a part two at some point, people seem very interested ☺️ thanks for watching 🥰

      @@dr.claire.perfume Yes, I agree, you can't help but be suspicious of the lists' veracity! Maybe you could do a list of the top ten based on 5-star reviews, but only counting ones that have at least, say, 25 or 50 reviews. There are tons that have 1 or 2 but that doesn't mean much, does it?

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  11 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, often reviews are collected as part of promotions (like free trial products) as well. It's a really difficult thing to find a fair way to look at. I agree, it would have to be limited to products with a good number of reviews. 🙂

    Canadian here. have to say JHAG must be pushing hard as Costco Canada is selling the whole line right now.
    Also, I think people who buy Chanel dont shop at Sephora, if I had to guess they are generally older and shop at the Bay etc.
    Lastly there is a popular tiktoker (Emma) here who loves Armani Prive so maybe that is the reason.

    • @dr.claire.perfume

      Fab insight! Really interesting to read all of this! I would never have guessed Costco would sell JHAG 🤣 I actually heard that Chanel wasn't even sold online at Sephora in Canada but I didn't check so I'm not sure... I do think Chanel generally has an older audience.
      You know what? I tried Tik tok and I don't get it 🤣 the videos just keep coming and seemingly about anything and everything... I think maybe I need to limit the feed to only people I follow?!

    Hi Claire another super interesting video!
    I'm from Brazil..leaving in Texas...a bit about us:
    Yes, we're the party nation and we're proud of that 😂
    212 Vip Rose is a staple for EVERY Brazilian woman...a must-have ultra popular. It's soft and bubbly, great for our weather.
    The older perfumes, I want to guess it is due to the price, perfumes prices are in dollars, which makes them expensive for Brazilians, so the old ones may be more affordable. Also we tend to like classics and staples...if it is to "invest" minus well be on a tried&true.
    Regarding Dior...Brazilians like perfumes with great performance, tremendous sillage etc...so Dior is out😅
    I hope it helps..love your videos!

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you! ❤️ I can see 212 VIP rose wearing well in Brazil! And yes, the older ones are certainly more affordable and also brands like cacharel have a lower pricepoint generally. Designer fragrances are incredibly expensive these days compared to only a few years ago too.
      Haha, I get that Dior are relatively quiet ones for partying 😂 Oh I need to visit Brazil! Thanks for watching 🥰

    • @Mah_fb
      @Mah_fb 10 месяцев назад +1

      @dr.claire.perfume Yes, visit. You'll love it!
      Just another addition, Sol de Janeiro is an American brand that's created an idea of a Brazilian feeling to Americans (genius idea). The inspiration comes from a well established Brazilian brand named O Boticário (love of my life). They have body butter, body sprays, lotions, edt, EDP...the whole range.
      But nothing in Sol de Janeiro is not made for Brazilians 🤣🤣. The price is too high, the quality (compared to national brands) is not that good, and especially the scent profile is not appealing. Brazilians love florals, then aquatic, then fruity, theeeen gourmand...generalizing, of course.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  10 месяцев назад +1

      Aah ok, so Sol de Janeiro is truly as un-Brazillian as it gets 🤣 haha! I agree, the pricepoint is insane for what it is...

    Chanel prices became simply too high. They are equal or more expensive than very good niche perfumes. I bought this week my beloved Allure EDP and I payed 145 euros (I saw it for 170 euros) ...I used to pay years ago 105, 110...people prefer instead to buy a Kayali, Juliette has a gun and other niche brands from similar price ranges.

    I think Indie perfumes should have a website just for them. There are so many brands that we don't know or never heard of 😢 Brazillians love fruits and dislike flowers I heard. I think those lists are not updated I guess. That's why so many old perfumes maybe😅 or maybe they meant all time bestsellers ? Anyway, txs for the video !

      I don't know, I don't feel those lists were what I would expect for anywhere really! 🤣 Well with indie, any cut massively hurts the bottom line, so probably only a very cheap platform would be able to attract brands to sell as a group. It would be fab though to have them all easily accessible and grouped together somewhere! Thanks for watching 🥰

    I believe the absence of Chanel or Dior on many of these lists is because many people purchase Chanel/Dior fragrances at Department Store counters or the Boutiques. I today went to my local Chanel Boutique to repurchase my Coco Chanel, I knew it would be in stock and less crowded than Sephora.

      Yeah I think in Europe, Sephora carries Chanel, maybe US too? I'm not sure, I think certain stores do supplement discounts themselves.
