- With Christopher Nolan’s latest, Oppenheimer, now in theaters and IMAX, Collider’s Steve Weintraub spoke to the film’s composer, Ludwig Göransson (Black Panther), about reuniting with the auteur director for one of this year’s biggest features. Having also previously worked together on Tenet, Göransson tells Weintraub it was “extremely exciting” to get the call for Oppenheimer, not only for the opportunity but because “...the way that he works with music in his movies is incredibly unique. It's almost like it's its own characters in his films.”
Oppenheimer is the white-knuckle biopic about physicist Robert. J. Oppenheimer, played by Cillian Murphy in his first-ever leading role with longtime collaborator Nolan. To tell the harrowing account of the man behind the world’s first nuclear weapon, the movie also boasts the talent of Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, and Florence Pugh.
During their interview, Göransson talks about the process of working with Nolan, from receiving that first call to reading the script and visualizing the music. He tells Weintraub what about the score he learned from the very first read, why violins play such a vital part in the music of Oppenheimer, how the “spellbinding” visuals of the movie played into the music, and why this job was so daunting at first. Göransson also discusses recording the music in under 10 days, what piece proved to be most challenging, and how AI may affect his work in the industry. You can find out all about this and more in the video or transcript below.

"Can you hear the music" is the best track that has ever graced one of Christopher Nolan's movies. Ludwig absolutely CRUSHED on this movie!
Having such a musical mind so young!, I'd never seen him before and was quite surprised!
It's all just insanely good. However I think you can't really compare all Nolan soundtracks, because none is worse than the other.
They are just better then most other scores.
Just a 10/10 and achieved everything what they wanted to achieve. Peak movie making
Great score. But better than Interstellr's score? Nah
Bro
The score is 100% my favorite thing about Oppenheimer. It’s Ludwig’s best score thus far. I can’t wait to see where he goes from here! “Can You Hear The Music” is basically on repeat.
100% agree, “Meeting Kitty” is also a favorite
The complex song he’s talking about is “Can You Hear The Music”.
I love that one. Have been listening to this short track in repeat.
He’s going to win the Oscar. And I’m here for it.
He is going to be legendary! What a great composition! He is making music for a movie but in reality, the music is so much bigger than the film! What an awesome guy!
Mans already won an oscar for his work in Black Panther. Also he’s done Venom, Creed, Tenet, and a few other movies.
For me already legendary because of TENET and some Star Wars sounds 🤘🏻
If John Williams and Hanz Zimmer had a child….Ludwig has already proven he can create memorable music with *Black Panther and Mandalorian.* I love that he's also working with Christopher Nolan. He’s also produced two of my favourite *Donald Glover / Childish Gambino* albums.
His music in black panther stands out
@@mohammedadham2791terrible score for a terrible film, disgusting even
He’s soooooo young. He will be with us for a long long time
The way he mentions David Julyan and doesn't forget him for the Zimmer favor, is sooooo respectful.
Did anyone notice how fast his face goes red at 14:47 when the interviewer compliments him?
Yeah, haha :) I think it's cause he called him Sir. Speaking as a fellow Swede, Sweden is quite a casual environment where first names are almost exclusively used. If I were to be called Sir, I might also blush.
The score for Oppenheimer made such an impression on me while I was watching the movie. It was obvious to me it was special and I was surprised to learn someone in his 30s made it.
amazing film, powered by Ludwig
I never thought that the Nolan&Zimmer collaboration could be surpassed as the best combination. And I was nervous for how Tenet would sound like without Zimmer, since the only other time I have heard Ludwig’s work was in Black Panther. But, I’m surprised that I love Nolan&Göransson combo just as much, maybe even MORE. I agree with Ludwig, that Nolan’s film scores are a character of their own, and gives it that unique style that I truly can’t compare to any other films. “Can you hear the music” is one of those moments that come to mind that transcends you to another reality, at least, that’s how I feel. And I would add, there were at least 2 moments in the ost that I heard some moments that seem to come straight out of Tenet ost. Not a bad thing at all, I loved it. At first I thought it was an Easter egg to Tenet, but after hearing him say he doesn’t do it on purpose, I was shocked. however, I enjoyed it. And I hope Nolan and Göransson will unite once again for the next project or any future project.
The Mandalorian intro l/theme is fantastic. That's from him.
@@ThePatman1980 you just blew my mind. I have only seen season one back when it came out. But i do remember jamming to it. I have to go on a rabbit hole of this guy, and hear his work!
A lot of us composers often have a bit of a calling card that is almost always subconscious in nature; sort of like a sonic identity or branding
As a composer myself, I am an oldskool composer diehard, and I don't gravitate towards modern artists often without them truly earning my respect.
But
This guy IS the future of film composing, I had goosebumps all the way through Tenet and Oppenheimer. His scores feel special.
Funny that someone named LUDWIG is the future of composing
Old Skool like Ska?
@@VeryImportantPepeAnd funny that he was actually named after Beethoven.
@@nickavenoso7851 Beethoven? The dog? Damn haha
@@VeryImportantPepe Ludwig van Beethoven, the composer. Lmao.
Regarding sneaking songs in from past films, listen to the song "Meeting Kitty" on the Oppenheimer soundtrack at the 5 minute mark it 100% sounds like a part of the Tenet soundtrack
wow what a great catch!!
He’s a fucking musical genius, he’s a legend of his own! The music ALONE makes me want to rewatch the movie in IMAX! The performances, music, sound, story, EVERYTHING was beautifully done! The music is both beautiful and haunting. It’s stuck in my head
The movie also makes me scared of those ramping thumps…they killed it! Obsessed with Cillian’s performance and music alone, no joke
I found it interesting when you mentioned John Williams and his reply because he said a similar thing about him in the making of The Mandalorian. But the fact that people keep mentioning John Williams to him seems like fate his after him to make him do incredible stuff.
The thumbnail image with him smiling as an explosion is taking place in the background surely is in the spirit of "cool people". 😂
How are there still a million worlds apart between the interviewers and the scores audio quality 😅
Such an amazing interviewer. Loved the questions!
Great interview 👏
"Can you hear the music" is absolutely amazing but i think that "meeting kitty" is also amazing. It gives me goosebumps every time i listen to it
I put in work, ask Ludwig!
Epic BGM 🔥🔥
If Glenn Powell and Greta Gerwig had a child it would look like Mr. Goransson
Epic Film , Epic score well done :)
Am I the only one to notice his facial structure is similar to Greta Gerwig
Omgg I was thinking this too
It's crazy to know that this is the same guy who worked with Donald Glover for so many years. I guess it goes to show the best artists keep good company.
I'm waiting when I can buy the soundtrack, I really want the FLAC files not youtube to mp3 bullshit lol
What's your audio set up?
crazy to me how little well known he is for producing childish gambino’s music
HE PRODUCED IT?????
i just checked it and im gagged
“i put in work, ask ludwig” -gambino on bonfire
Lol. If this interviewer drops any more names they are going to get a ticket for littering.
The thumbnail 👄
why he kinda look like elmo mush
I wish we got some actual composers in hollywood again.
Greta Gerwig
Yes this is clearly Greta Gerwig, if it's not Nolan, it's Greta Gerwig...
Or so YT tells me because these are the only 2 who can promote their movies right now 😅 😂
Pretty arrogant interviewer
What makes you say that?
WTF you talking about?
Yes!! I also felt
He was amazing. The best questions I've ever heard in any interview
Christopher Nolan likes his white boys.
Dude Goransson has even worked with Lucas Film 😅
Wth?
What's wrong with that??
If you seriously think Nolan is choosing his composers based on their race, you have an inner problem to face and resolve
