  • With Christopher Nolan’s latest, Oppenheimer, now in theaters and IMAX, Collider’s Steve Weintraub spoke to the film’s composer, Ludwig Göransson (Black Panther), about reuniting with the auteur director for one of this year’s biggest features. Having also previously worked together on Tenet, Göransson tells Weintraub it was “extremely exciting” to get the call for Oppenheimer, not only for the opportunity but because “...the way that he works with music in his movies is incredibly unique. It's almost like it's its own characters in his films.”
Oppenheimer is the white-knuckle biopic about physicist Robert. J. Oppenheimer, played by Cillian Murphy in his first-ever leading role with longtime collaborator Nolan. To tell the harrowing account of the man behind the world’s first nuclear weapon, the movie also boasts the talent of Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, and Florence Pugh.
During their interview, Göransson talks about the process of working with Nolan, from receiving that first call to reading the script and visualizing the music. He tells Weintraub what about the score he learned from the very first read, why violins play such a vital part in the music of Oppenheimer, how the “spellbinding” visuals of the movie played into the music, and why this job was so daunting at first. Göransson also discusses recording the music in under 10 days, what piece proved to be most challenging, and how AI may affect his work in the industry. You can find out all about this and more in the video or transcript below.

"Can you hear the music" is the best track that has ever graced one of Christopher Nolan's movies. Ludwig absolutely CRUSHED on this movie!

It's all just insanely good. However I think you can't really compare all Nolan soundtracks, because none is worse than the other.
They are just better then most other scores.
Just a 10/10 and achieved everything what they wanted to achieve. Peak movie making

I never thought that the Nolan&Zimmer collaboration could be surpassed as the best combination. And I was nervous for how Tenet would sound like without Zimmer, since the only other time I have heard Ludwig’s work was in Black Panther. But, I’m surprised that I love Nolan&Göransson combo just as much, maybe even MORE. I agree with Ludwig, that Nolan’s film scores are a character of their own, and gives it that unique style that I truly can’t compare to any other films. “Can you hear the music” is one of those moments that come to mind that transcends you to another reality, at least, that’s how I feel. And I would add, there were at least 2 moments in the ost that I heard some moments that seem to come straight out of Tenet ost. Not a bad thing at all, I loved it. At first I thought it was an Easter egg to Tenet, but after hearing him say he doesn’t do it on purpose, I was shocked. however, I enjoyed it. And I hope Nolan and Göransson will unite once again for the next project or any future project.

The movie also makes me scared of those ramping thumps…they killed it! Obsessed with Cillian’s performance and music alone, no joke
