DJI Mini3 Pro payload performance testing, how much can this awesome drone lift?

  • Disclaimer: I did not purchase this drone to lift object, but purely for the recording travel and outdoor videos.
    I have been thinking lately to try to the DJI Mini3 Pro fishing and I could not find online what the payload capacity was, so I decided to test myself, using the landing gear (weighing 34 grams) and various sinkers of different weight.
    I was actually disappointed from the result.
    Initially I tested it on Normal mode, to have the obstacle avoidance activated. but I then decided to switch to Sport mode.
    Furthermore the last two take offs left me perplexed... does sport mode kicks after some time maybe?

    Someone else already covered the 1st point I wanted to make, that your test weights didn't look to be centered. My 2nd point is that when lifting off from the ground (or other flat surface) the vortex created by the props tends to reduce the lift due to what I call the “doughnut effect”. In that, the prop wash directed downwards is then deflected laterally by the flat surface & curves around to the upper side of the props, reducing the available thrust. You might find increased performance by lengthening the string between the drone & the weight(s), although this can also increase oscillation & control (feedback) problems. Hand-launching would solve that problem. I read in another test article: “In our standardized thrust test, the Mini 3 Pro was able to lift 420 grams in addition to its own weight, a 2.7:1 thrust-to-weight ratio.”

      Thanks for the number. I was looking for the thrust to weight ratio!

    Mini 3 Pro always starts in N mode, then you need to switch to S, if already in S, switch to N then back to S

      do you know how long can I fly with additonal 200g?

  • @abhishekdsilva9673

    The reason for 130g to work perfectly cox it was well balanced vs earlier one propeller had more load, so the drone struggled to stay levelled

    Wonder for how long it can carry weight until the motors burn?

  • @stevezuo12
    @stevezuo12 Год назад +4

    Cool test, but I think what may have happened is your center of gravity was off. When you had the 124g mass it was far to the right, the 130g mass was more centered. Think of it this way if the right side of the drone is heavier than the left, then the 2 right-side propellers would have to spin faster to keep the drone level. Further testing is needed to confirm, but my guess is that the drone sensors were sensing something is off so it didn't go higher. Or the right-side propellers were already spinning really fast and couldn't spin much more. The drone would flip over to the right because the left-side propellers would generate too much lift and the drone would no longer be stable.
    If you run this test again I would try to get rid of the string and make sure the mass is securely attached instead of having it free swing. Second I would try to measure and make sure the mass is centered as much as possible. You could do this by putting a scale (4 scales total) under each arm to make sure each propeller is supporting the same or very similar weight.

      @imagesbydavide  Год назад

      Thanks @stevezuo12 very good points. The reason I did run thr test with the strings is because I wanted to simulate a fishing usage condition where with movements, fishing line and wind the weight is likely to be off-centered, but yes was rather interesting to see the drobe behaviour, and certanly this wasn't a very objective test

    How does the drone react when you release the weight. It's clearly working hard, then that weigh is gone, could you lose control?

  • @bashy2.0
    @bashy2.0 Год назад +3

    btw, for fishing, you need to also take into account the weight of the payload release mechanism, don't forget that part...

      Gopro cameras, which would add a lot of options to this drone, are around 150g but the older ones are 126. A proper mount would really help, but I think the motors are seriously struggling even with 100g.
