NOTE: Rabbits' teeth NEVER stop growing, so chewing is an important part of bunny enrichment. Providing your rabbit with chew toys is essential to keeping a happy and healthy bunny. This video is directed towards keeping your bunny from chewing up your personal items INSTEAD of their toys. I have my favorite bunny toys linked in my amazon shop (linked in the description). Enjoy!
I give my rabbit chew toys, but also, since I live in a place where I can get cottonwood sticks, I give her those to chew too. She loves knawing the bark off.
Hi, professional trainer here. Saying “no” is fine when immediate action needs to be taken, but it’s important to follow it with redirection. Positive reinforcement is the most effective way to train any animal.
Can you give an example of redirecting afterwards? I’ve tried distracting my bunnies with cardboard and treats but they still go to the same areas. I cover those areas with tiles or tape and they flip the tiles or chew through the tape
@@audraburke1526 It takes time, consistency and repetition for them to learn. Every single time they are chewing where they shouldn't say, "NO!" Then show them something they can chew on (cardboard cat scratcher, dig box, fresh wood, wicker basket). When they chew/dig on these reward them with treats. Repeat, repeat, repeat. They will eventually learn that it's far more fun and rewarding to chew their toys than your walls or carpet. It takes constant vigilance. Their access should be restricted if you're not around to keep an eye out whilst they're still learning. I hope this very quick explanation helps!
But do you train rabbits though? I've had all kinds of pets literally things people wouldn't even imagine and trust me not all pets are the same and they don't all get trained the same.
@@tieshafranzen6686 Yes, I do train rabbits, it’s the very foundation of my channel. Everyone (animal or human) responds best to positive reinforcement.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who had the sass back stomp... I did find the nudge her head away and no, worked for her though. but if I would "stomp" she would stomp.
Today I told my bunny “No, Cece” and she turned towards me, did a little thump so I go “that’s what I’m saying!” And she just binkied away. I don’t know what that says about me or her on how effective disciplining her is but it was for sure the Funniest thing I saw all day and I couldn’t be mad at her after that😂😂
I did train my bun like a dog. I put a treat in front of his face and wait until he turned his head away. Rewarded and did that over and over. Then I linked a command to it and now he knows whenever he does something he shouldn’t I say that word sternly and he usually will turn away and leave it. So I usually don’t have to punish him ☺️
Can you explain it a bit more? I don't get it. You put a treat in front of him so he eats the treat? Or turns away from the treat (how?) And how did you reward?
@@jaseczka i can try to explain it better. What you want to do is reinforce a specific behaviour. So you have to mark it with a word/treat, whatever the animal likes. I just sit on the ground and have a very tasty treat in my open hand. As soon as he goes for it I close my hand to make sure he doesn’t get it. As soon as he does turn even the slightest but away from me I reward him with a treat from my other hand. Keep building it up and eventually put a word to it. So as soon as he does the behaviour you want him to do say ‘no’ or smth. Not sternly, just say it. I’m not sure how to explain it. If you want some better training tools, look up ‘it’s me or the dog’ on youtube. Basically what she does. There’s a couple of older vids with a good video example. And don’t give up. Some rabbits find it more difficult than others. Hope I explained it good enough for ya. Good Luck and remember to have fun! And if u have more questions, contact me on insta @ Yukiandlynn. I’m happy to help
I trained with "no" and a slap on my thigh. No I just slap my thigh. The doe has this "stick-her-hands-in-her-pocket-and-whistle" kinda attitude, very sneaky, very naughty or should I say just so damn curious. All 3 of my buns are free roam their hutch is there time out, jail house I should call it. None of this has been over night. I'm still trying to get them to get along with my 3rd older abused bun. Was in a shelter for 5 years. Has a history of abuse, not by the shelter but by previous owner. He hates touch so 8 months later he comes for rubs😌. The young 2 yr doe loves to pluck, the 3yr old buck is ok with this. His back is sometimes a little bald. But the 6 yr old buck hates touch. How do I handle this? Any toy one can suggest? More time together? I have filled a cat litter with hay for her to forge, I have a play mat to hide treats in for her to scratch around, plush toys to lick and groom. I just want her to understand that 6yr old buck doesn't like plucks.
I NEEDED this video! My bunny can only free roam under supervision because of this issue. If I can get her to stop chewing my carpet and furniture then I can actually free roam her always! Tysm
you can also try clear packaging tape to protect as many problem areas as needed, &there’s play pen activity mats that are very big and affordable to help protect the carpet:) the biggest lifesaver for me has been stocking up on cuts of wood (also very cheap)& cardboard for them to chew on, its very effective for redirection!
But it's save to use packing tape? My bunny has the sharpest teeth and I'm afraid he'll eat a piece of tape. He us a chewing machine. He has toys, wood and everything for him to chew but he prefers walls and wood furniture 😭
Good points. I find that redirecting my bun works really well. When my bun starts to get out of line I yell "No! bad Peanut" and he responds to the sound of my voice and then I give him one of his chew toys or a handful of hay and it seems to make the connection for him. He rarely has accidents or chews things that he shouldn't. He still has naughty moments, but the more he knows what he can and cannot chew, he's learning for sure.
Thank you for this! So many rabbit content creators just shame people for not completely bunny proofing everything, or not just doing positive reinforcement for everything.
This is extremely helpful. Snuggles sometimes poops on the rug & nibbles my jeans, so I will try the thumping while saying no. Thank you for showing us that we can discipline with love & gentleness...
I just got a new rabbit two days ago (a Mini Plush Lop buck, under a year old). I've had a rabbit before, also a buck, when I was MUCH younger, but my mother is the one who really took care of him due to me being so young. I'm trying to relearn the ways of pet rabbits and how to balance our lives (because let's face it, a new bunny can be quite the struggle). I did research beforehand, but little of it prepared me for the little energy ball who is now in my care. Your videos have been SO helpful in teaching me how to guide him to not cause (too much) trouble and helping also teach me, not just him. I know it's way too early to say, "oh yes, this worked!" but it's easy, logical, and honestly, I've heard so many people use your tips and agree that they helped. So thank you for your channel and your tips and guides, it's making my bunny-raising journey a lot smoother!
I love the metal in the background when Cinnabun was going HAM on your baskets/furniture lol!! My bun Scooby was caught chewing on the strap of my designer handbag I got for Christmas… I did the stomp “NO” without even knowing it would be effective (I have been doing this along with picking him up). He defiantly clapped his feet and hopped away but when I sat back in our spot on the sofa he came over to me looking to play so I know I didn’t scare him.

He will actively jump out of my arms even before he's in my hands and freaks out If I do manage to pick him up. He trusts me a lot. He flops, sploots and even exposes his belly to me in my presence, he's just terrified of being in the air.

I have had two rabbits One was very people friendly, ran up to people to greet them, loved to explore all the rooms in the house. She chewed everything, furniture, carpets, clothing while I wear it, beds, cords, etc... Bunny two is shy, stays in one room mostly, does not roam the house, only comes too you if you have food for them, but very nice bunny, never chews my stuff. Two different personalities
Very good thank you for al the information I love your Chanel omg sunnebun is so cute we love her 💋🥰 I have very cute bunnies 👌😍 free roaming nice house they deserve a good live. I have rescued onther 2 bunnies were in cage's no hay voor15 weekse of there short lifetime so cute lovely bunnies😍 now 4 bunnies
Today I got my first ever bunny. She is a Dutch mark and her name is Buttercup. And guess what she is the exact same color as cinnabon and guess what.... (this will make you feel successful for your efforts to make videos) I didn't get it from a pet store rather from an ethical breeder who took excellent care of the whole litter.
This is so helpful!! Thank you thank you! I got my 2 Lionheads about a week ago and I can't seem to find a good video on how to comb a fussy rabbit who doesn't want to be combed. I need Jesus!
I have a gray bunny named Zoomer. He was from Woody’s first litter. That’s how I noticed Woody was a girl. He nips at me hard. And I hold his head down and say “no” to him in a strong tone.
my bun potty trained herself and she knows VERY well what "no" mens and what she isn't allowed teo do. So when she wants attention or to punish her humans, she eats the cables and the chargers or even cacti and she does it with a special look on her face, and does as much sound as possible.
I'm going to try all these. I especially needed the advice about them doing their business in the wrong places. I've been keeping her out of my bedroom and I can tell she feels left out because of it. Now maybe I can train her to respect my bed. 😊 🐇 Thank you
Thank you this was really informative I still live with my parents and one of the only ways that my dad will let me get a bunny is if it won’t chew so this was really helpful!
Oh my my my I needed this video !!! Goodness my bunny can transform to a real gremlin sometimes !! And when she does something wrong she does it with an attitude!!! So sassy !!pheww careful buns ! if you keep disobeying... You're going to end up in jail !!🔒 (worst part is when they look at you as you get not happy with them, they look so sorry !! But no no, these little angel face can eventually transform into little demons for a minute, but goodness we love them
Swear to god this was the MUCH NEEDED VIDEO🥺🥺❤️I’ll definitely try these put bec my bun keeps on chewing everything he finds😭even my design school drawing, pencils, and what not!!! Thanksss a lotttt much love💖
Getting them spayed or neutered stops the peeing which is territorial marking along w/ leaving poo as they move along...stomping also means danger & they are irritated...if you can't get them fixed, yes putting them in the litter box works, putting their poo in their litter box works & redirection w/ a no works
And this is how it worked out for us: Cayenne chews cord. Joseph thumps ground and goes "no". Cayenne thumps ground. Joseph thumps again. Cayenne thumps again. Joseph starts laughing. Cayenne zooms through the bunny tunnel. I have no idea who won the argument...
I can't have my bunny free roam my bedroom since she jumps on my bed and digs/chews the bedsheets, and I haven't been able to stop her. I tried the NO+ thump method, I even tried picking her up and saying NO to her, and I even tried doing the time out method (putting her back in her xpen). Would a small cage be good enough for time outs? (I will get her spayed within the next 1-2 months and the vet said it would be useful to get a smaller cage for the recovery). Before anyone says anything, the cage would be ONLY for time outs, and nothing else. I wouldn't keep her in a cage.
Oh my god! Thank you so muchhhhhh! This is the video I’ve been waiting for! Love your new intro, Cinnabun is soo cute as well! All of my wires are chewed 😤 all because of a little (evil) furball. Here’s a little recommend: can you make a video of how to make your bunny get used to getting held? Or they can’t get held?
This video got released at the PERFECT TIME, My new bun started becoming more destructive, he chewed my brothers charger and it’s no longer fast charging💀 - I’m going to bunny proof as well as use these techniques
My rabbit ate half of my wall were it got to the metal but i gave her boxes and lots of toys she stopped. I had to give her little pushes that didn't hurt her. I also give her kisses on her head and nose. Also remember dont give your bunnys abbits baths its bad for them.
Great video, I'm gonna try it this week. My bunny is driving me crazy for the last week. She's chewing on books, carpets, wall paper, my clothes, brum, whatever she finds - and she climbs on furniture like crazy. She even tasted a cactus and liked it very much
@@HeatherCashArt I did. But my bunny is jumping on everything and she's very clever. Today I left the room for 20 sec and she hopped on the table and was eating my bread.
Your rabbit is bored and chewing because she needs to grind down her teeth and prevent dental problems..use rabbit safe enrichment and NEVER leave unsafe foods out anywhere. It's your responsibility to provide safety for your rabbit. She's also climbing because it's normal for a rabbit, they need things to go in and out of, up and down or tunnels to go through.
@@HeatherCashArt I didn't leave it. Maybe I didn't describe the situation enough. I put down my plate with breakfast sandwich and had aone bite of the piece of bread while I went back for my water
I remember one time, my mom was angry at me because i didn't watch our bunny while she's roaming the house and ended up munching and cutting my mom's charger.. This is really helpful to us, thankchuuu♡
omg I did the thing you did! Before I saw this video if my bunny did something wrong like for example trying to get on my bed just too pee on it while I was still SLEEPING I would do her stomp to let her don't it's not okay omg yay! I would also say No while doing it
Right my bunny jumped over our fence inside and went up our stairs and gave her self a house tour went into everyone's room whole she has the whole down stairs to her self😭😭
I've been searching for how to discipline my bunny Apollo as he is a naughty man who keeps trying to hump my cats and ate my yoga mat haha. Its the wee pees he does on the couch even tho he is litter tray trained. Pee pads are not a good look on the couch 24/7 . Yup free roaming most of the day. Thank you! New subscriber 💃
I've had rabbits for 5 years, and decades worth of dogs. Here's what I found. So I have never been one to yell or even raise my voice much. So what I've accidentally learned is that by changing to a firm tone, the Bunny immediately reacts bc it's out of character. "no Sydney" in a firm voice causes him to immediately retreat.. Then I give him something he can chew. I never would pick my buns up to scold as you say. As prey animals, It's hard enough to get most buns to trust you to pick them up, so logically it would just instill that being picked up is negative.
Thank you for this! I'm watching after my bunnies escaped from their safe area, chewed through the wire of our new dryer then chewed through an important cable! They do this multiple times a day and its getting out of hand and meaning that they get less freedom in the house. I really need some help so I need to try some new things (Also the problem is I don't know which bunny is being naughty or if its both!)
So you should let them chew up all your stuff and like it, because after all they are adorable and you wouldn’t want to risk “ruining the relationship with your rabbit” by hurting their feelings and telling them no. It’s advice like yours why such a high percentage of rabbits are returned to shelters by their owners tired of the destruction.
NOTE: Rabbits' teeth NEVER stop growing, so chewing is an important part of bunny enrichment. Providing your rabbit with chew toys is essential to keeping a happy and healthy bunny. Thank you for this! I just gently hold my rabbits snoot when she's being naughty and it used to work but now she got cheeky and she licks my hand when I hold her snoot
I have had two rabbits
One was very people friendly, ran up to people to greet them, loved to explore all the rooms in the house. She chewed everything, furniture, carpets, clothing while I wear it, beds, cords, etc...
Bunny two is shy, stays in one room mostly, does not roam the house, only comes too you if you have food for them, but very nice bunny, never chews my stuff.
Two different personalities
Sometimes I try to be upset when he chews up my things, but I can't, he is too CUTE, I just laugh 😬😅😅
Every pet needs limits and discipline! Good job
Cinnabun is so cute🥰
Ty soo much, this is soo Helpfull I LOVE YOU❤️
Love your channel- it’s the best rabbit informative/rabbit centric one on RUclips by far
my bun potty trained herself and she knows VERY well what "no" mens and what she isn't allowed teo do.
NEEDED THIS because Thumper is king chewy 😑🤦🏾♀️
Thank you! These are the things we've been doing but it's good to have reassurance 💖
I have no idea who won the argument...
love this keep up the good work
My bunny knows when she’s in trouble now so she just runs to her bedroom so I don’t pick her up and take her there 😂 she HATES being picked up
I love your videos! Bunny psychology!
I’m getting my bunny in 4 months. Thanks for this, I hope I’m prepared ❤️🐰
Extremely helpful content...thanks!
Thank you so much for being such an inspiration to me. Your videos have been so helpful and I've now got two bunnies 🐰!! X
Aw I’m so glad!
I lost my bun yesterday as she went into shock... i loved my little yellow so much
I hope this will help Morgan
My Smokey is so destructive 😂 she even gets into bunny proofed things 🤦🏻♀️
Thank you for making this video my rabbit loves to chew the walls and my stuff!! I’ve gotta hide everything so she can free roam lol 😂
This video got released at the PERFECT TIME, My new bun started becoming more destructive, he chewed my brothers charger and it’s no longer fast charging💀 - I’m going to bunny proof as well as use these techniques
ur hair looks really cute in this vid!💜💜
Superrrr helpful! thank you!
ruclips.net/video/DalRo9scEgg/видео.html🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Amazing as ever you two, as always, keep up the good informative videos. Live your channel soooo much. Can't wait for next Sunday.
Thank you so much!
my rabbit likes eating my basket that looks just like yours! thank you so much!
Great video ! 🤍
My rabbit ate half of my wall were it got to the metal but i gave her boxes and lots of toys she stopped. I had to give her little pushes that didn't hurt her. I also give her kisses on her head and nose. Also remember dont give your bunnys
abbits baths its bad for them.
Same our wall is destroyed
you should also do a review of people’s rabbit habitat like lennon the bunny
Super great video!
Great video, I'm gonna try it this week. My bunny is driving me crazy for the last week. She's chewing on books, carpets, wall paper, my clothes, brum, whatever she finds - and she climbs on furniture like crazy. She even tasted a cactus and liked it very much
You should really bunny proof the room.
@@HeatherCashArt I did. But my bunny is jumping on everything and she's very clever. Today I left the room for 20 sec and she hopped on the table and was eating my bread.
@@paulisialinka you shouldn't leave bread out where your bun can eat it
Your rabbit is bored and chewing because she needs to grind down her teeth and prevent dental problems..use rabbit safe enrichment and NEVER leave unsafe foods out anywhere.
You should just bunny proof the house
My bunny ate our wall while my mom was sleeping every wall was bunny proofed but that one
thanks for this video! my bun is 4 months old now and is chewing everything including her own litter box!!!
I NEEDED THIS SO MUCH! FLUFFY IS BEING SUCH A MONSTER SINCE SHE IS 4 MONTHS OLD AHHA
omg I did the thing you did! Before I saw this video if my bunny did something wrong like for example trying to get on my bed just too pee on it while I was still SLEEPING I would do her stomp to let her don't it's not okay omg yay! I would also say No while doing it
Sweet and sensitive? My bun owns this household 💀
Right my bunny jumped over our fence inside and went up our stairs and gave her self a house tour went into everyone's room whole she has the whole down stairs to her self😭😭
My bunny being good now
Thank you so much! I have a baby boy bun and he loves to go wild and climb stuff and get into stuff and he would ignore me and I hope this will help 😁
I use a spay bottle and give them a spritz when they’re chewing up the carpet, never knew about the stopping I’m gonna try that !
This is soo helpful, literally found my rabbit chewing over 60 dollars worth of gaming supply and I was really worried about him😥
one thing i like about my rabbit is he never peed on anything exept the litterbox
This video is super helpfull, Ive always wondered how I can correct them withought you know... hurting them, Ill try this tips right away, thanks!
I'm gonna have to try the bunny jail one. 😂
My boy bun hates being cooped up. I think he'd get the point pretty quick.
Never punish a bunny or a rodent. If you want a pet to fear you, you are not suitable for keeping any pet.
My bun just hopped out of his play area!😂
