  • My friend Jesse Appell is a full-time professional standup comedian in Beijing, China. He uses his fluent Mandarin to wow Chinese audiences with routines that combine American-style standup comedy with Chinese xiangsheng (crosstalk).
We had a wide-ranging conversation where we touched on what life is like for Jesse who has spent close to a decade living in China, how he got his Chinese to the point where he can perform comedic routines in Chinese, what it’s like doing comedy for Chinese audiences, what jokes work for them and what don’t, and what audience sensitivities are like for Americans performing in China. Overall an incredibly interesting interview!

      Polly Pocket great question

    • @jesseappell6674
      @jesseappell6674 4 года назад +26

@@pollypocket2282 usually the audience's life experience is more important than the language. So if I'm performing for Chinese people who have lived in the States, I could make most of the same jokes about life in the States about either language, and vice versa if I'm performing for non-Chinese who have lived in Beijing a while. So I need to feel out what is connecting with the audience and then I can adapt to whatever language those people speak

    21:55 I can agree with that 100%
Because most Chinese have no experience of those "western" forms of comedy, almost anything you might be able to do (in a comedic sense) is new and interesting to them.
I worked for 2 years in Hefei (west of Shanghai) commissioning a power station. . . I am a power station operator. . NOT a comedian. . .
Yet, the few times I was able to make a joke in Chinese. . Or a physical joke that needed no language. . .they loved it. . because it was new.
Even really simple things. . Here's an example. .
Maxwell Smart. . Phone rings . He takes off his SHOE and says "Hello" into the shoe. . We all know it from the "Get Smart" TV Series. .
WE all know what that's going on and why he is talking into his shoe and have seen it a thousand times. .
*BUT* when you're sitting at a desk in a Chinese office and the phone on the desk rings. . You take off your shoe and say 喂 (wéi) (Which is what Chinese people say when they answer the phone) into the shoe. . . They piss themselves laughing. . It's the FUNNIEST thing they have ever seen!!
Thanks to you Mel Brooks, I was a really funny guy in Hefei. . .

    Jesse,
I have to say, the funniest thing was watching Xiaoma drink tea, and more tea, and more tea, and MORE tea....
Being extremely polite, but visibly "clenching" as he became more full.
Moving the cup...... that didn't work...
Would that make a good joke in the club?

it's a whole ceremony, first you brew the tea very quickly with water, then pour it into a "fairness cup," so the steeps are all mixed together, then pour the tea from there into your cup to drink. the tea also cools off super quick because of all the pouring and small ceramic cups

Due to the schedule conflict at college and job I had to quit my Chinese but I still want to continue learning Chinese and other languages. My ancestors are from China but I was born and grew up in Cambodia and I got married then moved to the States. My daughter is studying in Chinese charter school and she’s speaking 3 languages and now I’m struggle to help my daughter with her Chinese homework so I have to get back to study Chinese again 😅😁☺

Please make more videos like that. Your videos are too good for 15 min only. Make it as longer as possible!

Thank you both! I have always been useless at foreign language. But as an adult my wife and I have tried to teach out children Greek when on holiday. Our 6 year old held a Greek class today for her whole class. You have shown me not to give up on world experience. I am sure one day my daughters will speak many languages!

Just by listening to this intellectual conversation... Im learning and understanding Chinese culture. I’m from the Philippines but one of my great great and great grandparents were pure Chinese from Beijing!

I have the same cast iron teapot you have in black, but mine is white. What do you have it setting in to put the tea light candle under it? I didn't realize you could do that to keep the tea warm.
