  • In this second of two sessions hosted by the C.S. Lewis Society of California, Paul Vander Klay discusses the insights of renowned psychologist Jordan B. Peterson in his international, best-selling book, "12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos." What does everyone in the modern world need to know? Peterson’s answer to this most difficult of questions uniquely combines the hard-won truths of ancient tradition with the stunning revelations of cutting-edge scientific research, distilling the world’s wisdom into 12 practical and profound rules for life.

    • 12 Rules for Life: An ...
Humorous, surprising and informative, Peterson’s book tells us why skateboarding boys and girls must be left alone, what terrible fate awaits those who criticize too easily, and why you should always pet a cat when you meet one on the street.
What does the nervous system of the lowly lobster have to tell us about standing up straight (with our shoulders back) and about success in life? Why did ancient Egyptians worship the capacity to pay careful attention as the highest of gods? What dreadful paths do people tread when they become resentful, arrogant and vengeful? Peterson journeys broadly, discussing discipline, freedom, adventure and responsibility. "12 Rules for Life" shatters the modern commonplaces of science, faith and human nature, while transforming and ennobling the mind and spirit of its readers.
Paul Vander Klay is a pastor in the Christian Reformed Church of North America.

If you’re not subscribed to Paul Vanderklay’s channel, you’re missing out. His longer philosophical and theological analysis videos are the best of RUclips. He’s a brilliant guy with a real knack for connecting the dots between the great thinkers and making the complex very digestible. Can’t provide a more enthusiastic recommendation for Paul.

James at the end says Lewis might say Peterson is ready to be surprised by joy instead of being shocked by darkness. The way I put it in a letter to Rod Dreher is that Peterson might be able to teach us better how to grieve, but we can teach him how to rejoice.

JBP says in that clip that “The process by which that knowledge is updated has to occupy a position in the hierarchy of values that supersedes your reliance on dogma.” The process to which he is referring is adaptation to anomaly which he discusses at length in chapter 4 of Maps of Meaning. Anomaly can be understood at both the micro and the macro levels. It can be something as small as an obstacle which confronts a single-celled organism and forces it to learn, and it can be as large as someone like Hitler altering the world landscape in history. In some sense, anomaly represents a view of suffering and its impact on our growth and maturity that should lead to gratitude both for our own growth and for the sacrifices that went into creating the civilization in which we now live. JBP often talks about the wonder of electric lights and plumbing systems that work, as well as the concept of the sovereign individual which underlies western civilization, all of which required much updating of knowledge and all of which arose because of someone’s suffering.

I think many people have misunderstood jbp's approach. It's the same approach 12 step programs make to growing and obtaining a relationship with God. I believe he's trying to avoid an echo chamber. He says go out find Truth in the face of your own experience. Seeking and whatever God is will take care of the rest. It's more useful I believe.

Me and my brother: Myself listened to JBP....in two years found better job, a girl and living indipendent!
My brother, atheist, listens to SH and others... has nothing of the above...
    What gives?

Jordan Peterson isn't holding the tension intentionally. It comes from the collective understanding of what it actually means to "Be" a Christian. I think Jordan Peterson believes that the term Christian get's assumed by conflicting representations. Everyone believes that everyone one else will be damned. That mindset is intrinsically flawed and toxic to the perception of truth. Assuming apriori that you know God's plans explicitly is a very bold claim to make. Greater than any one man to claim. The proper way to frame your self in the world is then to act out in the manner which you can perceive is the best possible way of being.

Zakkery Diaz Actually, we don’t know anything unless God has made it possible to do so and has revealed it to us, eg that the world has an interpretation (‘rational Logos’) that we can perceive and understand with the faculties we have.

I think atheist would stop listening to Dr Peterson the moment he declares his personal belief in the resurrection and assent of Jesus.

Isa, I do not think it has anything to do with money. Dr Peterson often refers to his "mission" when asked about the question of belief. He has certainly been saying all the same things long before making any fame or fortune.
