- How To Take Ownership Of Administrative Files and Folders On Windows 10/8/7.
If you’ve ever been denied access to a file or folder in Windows, chances are you need to take ownership of them with your user account. Here’s how.
In Windows, a user that has ownership of a file or folder has implicit rights to change permissions on that object. That user is also always allowed to access the file or folder-even when other permissions seemingly contradict that access. When you create a file or folder, the user account under which you’re logged in automatically gets ownership.
But you might occasionally run into a situation where you need to take ownership of a file or folder. Maybe you’ve got files or folders that were created by a user account that has since been deleted. Maybe you’ve got a hard drive from another PC that you’re working on. Or maybe you just need access to a particular system file-like “notepad.exe”- so you can apply a system modification. Whatever your reason, here’s the official way to take ownership of a file or folder. And once you’ve learned how to do it, why not make it even easier and add a “Take Ownership” command right to your context menu?
This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops, and tablets running the Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 7 operating systems. Works for all major computer manufactures (Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, Samsung). Наука
Unfortunately this isn't working for my uses. It keeps saying "permission denied" when I'm trying to click apply
I got as far as all those OKs. the page on which I have to check if ALL APPLY was not filled in with those items shown on YOUR page?? Plus it still says I am not administrator so I still can't delete temp files?? Any suggestions? Thanx

im on windows 10 and when i open the properties window im not getting a security settings option ? can anybody advise me as to how to enable this option ?
This, although you think would be dated, tutorial still works! I went to download a zip file, that being an amp simulator plugin, because it was free and open source, I decided to download it from another website, it wasn't even sketchy at all. When I downloaded the file and unzipped it, there were no dialog boxes for me to even had given what I downloaded permission to run as admin. Had there been any red flags I would never had installed it and continued in the process. It's sad to think there is someone out there that took something open source and riddle it with whatever it was to take power as admin. I scoured the internet to find the right tutorial to fix this, but none of them were, some of them wanted me to run scripts, but it was overtly complicated compared to this way to regain power as admin. Thanks a lot!
Windows 10 from 2015 is extremely similar to Windows 10 in 2021. Desktop Operating Systems don't change that fast.
Thatnks. Question: How can I do this in bulk? I reinstalled Windows and all my files are from the "old owner".
Hey, please help, I kind of changed ownership to something else and restarted my pc and now I don't have perm to change ownership, how do I fix it?

Kind of garbled there but this helped me get STEP 1: Access to my own shit, then STEP 2: Able to turn on permissions on everything. For some reason Microsoft does NOT MAKE IT CLEAR YOU NEED TO GO INTO 5 ADVANCED MENUS TO GRANT YOURSELF ACCESS LOL.

Hi, This is a big problem I have faced in my laptop. Sir, I have stored some personal photo's in drive D: which is already under windows bitlocker, but I dont remember I had been given some personal certificate to access these photos that time which I dont remember now. I tried every possible way to access these photos after Formatting C: drive. when I try to open these files. it gives a massage "it looks like you don't have permission to access this file" and when I try to take ownership of these files, the owner of these files symbol have a note of interrogation symbol on it. can you help me?
If you can kindly elaborate, I will do my best to assist.

The problem is that, as was the same in this video, all the options (checkboxes) are grayed out. It would be helpful to have a video that shows how you can actually make a selection (un-gray the boxes) so you can actually MAKE a change.

It's weird that all my hard drives have SYSTEM as owner. I'm the only user and I should have admin priviliges.
Yes I am having multiple issues with certain folders not allowing me permission. I am the only fucking user yet I don't have administrator permission somehow. I mean are you fucking kidding me??? I swear I'm so enraged I'm ready to slam my fist through the screen. I've watched so many videos and I have looked this shit up and I have tried everything but no matter what I do it says error.

My name is Victor. I am a college student and I currently have an issue with my laptop that I have been unable to solve. I enjoyed your video and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice.
My issue is with antimalware service executable. It is hogging the cpu running at 20%+ usage anytime the laptop is on. I tried excluding the file and that did not work. I followed your exact steps in your video in hopes of taking ownership and deleting the file (MsMpEng). The only issue I have in following your video is what happens after clicking on "change" in the advanced security settings window. After I click change, nothing happens. The change button turns grey and then I can no longer click on it. I'm not sure why this happens. If the select user or group box would pop up then maybe I could change the ownership of MsMpEng and then delete it. Does anybody have any advice?
Thank you
you need ownership and full control of the folder/s that the file you want to change is being stored in, atleast that would be my best guess.
OMG! Thank you so much bro!!!
Any time!
100% working one can go through it .... Good video
Glad to help!
It worked for me, I had a windows installation on another drive and I was not able to access it. However, I wasn't able to get permission to access some folders in the Users/(your user) folder (like .AppData).
i am in a similar situation - i have another installation on a different hard drive and i am simply trying to delete an .mp3. however it's owned by a user on the other installation. i could boot into it, but that hard drive is very old and so would be very inconvenient
I cant even open it just freezes

Why choose to give ownership to "authenticated users" as opposed to giving it to your specific account?
Surely someone with ill intent could become an "authenticated user" and if that happened wouldn't they also be granted ownership / permissions?
Cuz thats the goal obviously
