As of 16/02/2022, this general process still works on windows 10.
It is true that you no longer can access a system-wide command prompt in the very beginning to rename files like he did in the same way he shows you, but there are still other ways, namely using a usb-stick that has windows installation media on it, then in the BIOS booting your computer through that usb stick. Once your windows is in the boot up menu for windows 10, press shift + f10, and it brings up the command prompt. Then just follow his steps for the rest of the video and it'll work.
Thank you Kirt! I had some problems towards the end with Trusted Installer/User Permissions to needed to rename utilman file but you solved the problem. I'm a MacOS person working on my mother's WIndows machine-so full credit to your step by step instructions! Grateful for your help. Agree with several other comments about this being THE BEST solution tutorial out there.

Thanks for this tutorial. Worked like a charm. I was worried that MS might have patched this over the years since you posted this but they apparently have not so this is still relevant and works. I’ve been locked out of my admin on the pc since windows 10 sort of forced me to create separate access privileges for my admin account a couple of years ago.

Kirt your solution is very detailed and easy to follow, but I cannot get into the Command Prompt from the Advanced Options Window. When I select Command Prompt, I get two options. Option 1 is to "Choose an account to continue". If I select my account, I am asked for a password. Option 2 says "Forgot your password or don't see your account?". If I select this, it basically says that accounts listed are only admin accounts that have previously signed into this PC. And, you need to be signed in as an admin to use some repair and restore tools. Finally, it says that if you do not have a PW you can try restarting and logging in as an admin.
It's worth noting that when I get to the Advanced Options window, the same options (as shown in your video) are available, but in a slightly different order. I know that should not matter, but I wonder if there was a Windows update that closed this loop hole.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Awesome. Not the changing or updating of the password which a bunch of other do show (great to know), but the adding the current user (yourself) to full authority on System32. When I saw this my mouth dropped open, and I hit the Subscribe Button. I will watch it a few more times just to be sure I get it.

This also happened to me. I created another account (since I could still access my laptop via pin)and set it as the admin in settings. Then I used the password for that account to get pass it.
Wow you are a life saver. I changed my password and somehow it was not working when I tried logging back in. I could not even access safe mode or my command prompt since it was the admin account. Using my reboot CD I was able to access command prompt and follow your instructions. Worked like a T :). Thanks man!

min 11.30: also works if:
- search for "cmd"
- when Command Prompt is shown, right click over it and select "Run as administrator"
- write "cd c:\windows\system32" (or the according windows drive letter, instead of "c:")
- write "copy utilman2.exe utilman.exe"

Can't get to command prompt. I can get through to that select command prompt screen, but to then takes me to a select account screen and of course asks for the password I forgot to the account I'm locked out of.

So its 2022 and i locked myself out because i was playing around with administrator rights stuff. And this worked. I was sweating and hungry trying all sorts of stuff with net user commands and didnt get anywhere. Ur the man. Great video.

Hold the shift key when you click restart
You could also hold shift and click restart when at the lock screen to access cmd, instead of the double force shutdown

I was able to change my windows log-in to an old password, but yesterday, windows changed my password without my permission back to my Microsoft account password.
I found this on the Microsoft site looking for why it changed.
•Press Windows Key + R, to open the Run command, type control userpasswords2 and click OK.
•On the resulting User Accounts dialogue box, click on the Advanced tab, then click on the Advanced button under Advanced User Management.
•The next windows should be Local User and Groups. Click on the Users folder in the left pane, this will expand the right pane to show all of the user accounts on the machine. Right-click on your user account and choose Properties.
•Check the box "Password never expires", then click Apply
so when I do the steps you have showed, (I cut my teeth on Dos 5/6.22) I can also perform the password never expires trick and hopefully shut Microsoft out of changing my password without my permission again.

hello, you probably need to update this. you have to sign into your admin account to bring up command prompt in recovery mode.

@@KingBiBim for me it only worked once. I saw a discussion on a different video and someone said after you do it once it is very difficult to keep booting into startup repair.

Thank you so much for the help i was able to solve the password problem.. but the main problem that led me to the password problem was the permission to users, i have two users, i limited access to the public user but now i can't seem to edit the permission if i click edit the options are disabled like they appear in grey color like a shadow i can't do anything. I thought maybe if i reset my pc changes that i made would be restored instead i couldn't log in to my pc now i was able to reset the password but the i still can't edit users permissions.....
And another problem is with the typing. My keyboard works perfectly fine if i use typing documents but if i try to search for something it wont type, if i try to type WiFi password it wont type i don't know how to fix that. I thought maybe the window was outdated i updated the window but still wont type. I don't know what else to do...

When I hit the option for command prompt, it still wants me to login which defeats the purpose of trying to go around the not having a password
If you can, load windows onto a usb with a different computer. Then insert it into your computer. When it gets to the screen that looks like the video at 3:14, click “Next” at bottom right. Then at the next screen, click repair at the bottom left. You should be able to use the command prompt now without needing the password.

This was good but I like to use osk (on screen keyboard ) and then rename it to get into pc

After resetting the user password while the cmd window is open you can delete the file utilman.exe and rename utilman2.exe because you are System authority

For all watching this worked despite them having only the admin account active which was password protected. I am an I.T. guy who regularly has to crack passwords but all my usual tools failed as the laptop as it has a Ryzen chipset, aaarrrgghh! I followed Kirt's instructions and now I am in. How did I not know this trick? Kudos to you sir, thank you very much! P.S. I watched several other videos with roughly the same idea but was thwarted because the user was using the admin account with a password so the 'system restore' method was unavailable.

This doesnt work on windows 10 on newer versions, so title is misleading, you need the admin password to access command prompt so you actually would need the password you are trying to bypass to access it...

yeah, windows nowerdays needs u to enter the user password to even enter the command prompt. so at 5:15 there u need the password.
Just use a bootable USB with windows then instead of installing just go on repair then u can find cmd there which does not require a password

After using this method, the blue transparent box that shows up on the desktop is no longer blue, any way to fix that? I went into the settings and switched the setting for it off and back on again and it seemed to be fine but after a reboot it was no longer blue again.
Worked a treat on an old hard drive i found at the back of a draw and password long since forgotten. You do require windows boot disk; any version/install though to get to command prompt without needing the lost password.
I can see that my C: has a windows folder in my file explorer but when I’m in the command prompt and use dir, windows is not listed.
Edit: The network path of the windows folder is not shared and I need administrator access to change it

I got farther with this video than any other solution I've tried, however when I get to the applet window to change the password, everything is greyed out, and it says "the password for this user cannot be changed". And it is the only user set up.

jose manuel gomez unfortunately no. I spent a few days trying everything I could find. I ended up using the hp backup utility that works outside of windows, wiping the drive and reinstalling.

All worked on an up-to-date Windows 10 as of Feb 2021 to get a command prompt, but the command control userpasswords2 had the reset password button greyed out. Instead you can click on the 'Add...' button to create a new user, then click on the 'Advanced' tab of the userpasswords2 dialogue, from where you can click on 'Advanced' user management, find and right click on the newly created user in the 'Users' list and assign them to be in the 'Administrators' group. Restart the machine and you have a new administrative user to log in as.

I had a problem while applying the full control of the user acct. Windows security opens up and when i clicked yes it says error applying security information to C:\Windows\System32\0409
