This is the video I would say was the basis for helping me get into casting. That volume of lead is still shocking to see!! Glad to see Elvis coming out with new videos and continuing the casting passion. The testing on steel plates Elvis did with 223 was awesome, too...and ballistics gel!!! This video in the youtube suggestions brought me back to the beginning of a great hobby and passion.
Elvis, you’re the man!!! I’m just now getting into casting my own bullets, and just found a tire shop that’s going to give me my first 5 gallon bucket of lead tire weights!! I’m excited!! Thank you for the tip brother!!
Elvis ammo! I found a few tire places near me that hooked me up with 3 5 gallon buckets of wheel weights. So I started going through the first bucket sorting out the lead. Yesterday I did my first ingot casting in my cast iron dutch oven. It went flawlessly. Just like your videos showed me how to do it. Thanks for all your knowledge and your videos! There great! Take care and happy reloading!
Hey Elvis, I live in SC too and I can get lead from tire shops as well -- but never more than one or maybe 2 buckets at a time. I think the reason is because you're getting it all! What an awesome haul!
A lot of weight on the suspension of the truck a good way to bust a spring and brake a axle. Make small trips. Good job on your lead making. I've found a same what lead but it's very hard
That's a American pickup truck son......looks like maybe a Dodge by the tail lights. It could be a 3/4 or 1 ton truck as well. Not everybody drives Toyota and Nissan garbage. I have a 2002 Ford F-250 Super Duty 4x4 off road, long bed super cab with the 7.3L Power Stroke diesel V8 myself. You ain't gonna "bust" that truck....trust me!
Hey, I have been in the trenches with Do You Mail for some months now, and it is made a huge impact in how I do cold outreach. The setup is hassle-free with automatic SPF DKIM DMARC dns configuration that saves a bunch of time. Pairs seamlessly with someone is existing infrastructure but gives the power of dedicated IPs. If you need a cost-effective tool at $40/month, this might be it.
Just seeing this video in Feb. 2024 , how much of that do you have left of that 4500# or are you maintaining that stockpile ? That was an awesome haul though .
I spent about a hour digging through the 3 55g barrels at one of the local tire shops yesterday and got about 35-40lbs of lead. I’m kind of torn between time and value. It was free.. but I charge $80/h for my plumbing rate. Seems to be getting to where it’s worth more to work and buy the less than scrap it. But.. on slow days I’ll go dig through the barrels
I am casting some weights to weigh down a storage chest so no one can pick it up without first opening the chest and removing the weights. This video was incredibly helpful and I appreciate you giving out information on how to acquire lead.
I have a great guy that is a mobile tire fitter for truck's. I give him a case of beer for buckets of lead every month. His brother swapped me 85kg of printing lead letter for 250 bird shot 12g shells, I know I got the good end of that deal. Love your channel Elvis.
Chain tire shops don't give them up but they do drop them and I scrounge them around the shop when closed. Shops at truck stops may give up the trash weights if ask.
Great score Elves I remember herring Obama closed all lead mines in the US and that There will be no more leaded gasoline available anywhere I don’t know how this relates to let bullets but I thought I would throw it out there
I'm paying .30 cents a pound for mixed lead wheel weights at the local scrapyard here. I bet I see 70% - 80% usable lead out of that. When you find stick on pure lead wheel weights in there it kinda makes up for all the bum ones. I save those separate for another batch of just those. It takes awhile to come up with any amount of them before it is worthwhile melting them down. I have a 20 quart, 7 quart and 2 quart Dutch ovens. It depends on what I am doing for which one I use at that given time. If at all possible I try to use the 20 quart the first time. It keeps everything more uniform and all in the same alloy weighing the same that way. I have multiple size ingot molds I store and use my lead in. The big boy is a 11 1/2 pound ingot. I use that one to process, hoard and store large quantities of lead. I have 5 and some change pound molds I use when I want to store/use them. Also have Lyman 1 pound ingot molds for topping off the pot while I am casting. Also have some trapezoid ones I made myself out of angle iron and welded them up with sides and handles. I don't use those very often but every once in awhile I do.
Hi Elvis, I’ve been collecting range scrap, but since there’s only one range close to me, I’ve gotten about all I can until it builds back up. I’ve been thinking about wheel weights, but have heard that now they are using a lot of zinc and that’s not supposed to be good. I know you made a video on using zinc, but for now I want to stay with lead. How do you know the difference between the two and what happens if a small amount of zinc gets mixed in by mistake? Thanks

Elvis - This is one of the finest, if not the finest, wheelweight acquisition videos on YT..!! - I used to buy three of those 5 gallon buckets of lead at a time from the metal scrapyard before wheelweights were banned in CA (tire shops used to give me a couple of handfuls or a little bucket, wasn't worth the effort back then - now they have to turn in quotas so they can't give out any). Your lead supply makes my getting 20 pounds of range scrap at a time look like a drop in the bucket...!! Well done. If I lived near you, I'd help you melt that down just for the fun of doing it...!! My casting pot died so I have replacement on order so I can cast up a lot of bullets to do those 3 new Eastwood colors... Have a great day, FC Steve
Hey there Mr Fortune Cookie! nice lead haul huh..... Im stocking up on lead instead of buying gold!!!! ha ... If you was to help me make ingots, we'd have some of the finest chow mein, egg rolls, and fortune cookies for desert. With nothing but good news in them! : ) ... I might even send ya home with another chicken to make ya more eggs! : ) ...Sorry about your melting pot! You finally used that thing one time to many... You made lots of bullets. And the price for a new one aint bad! Thanks for all your hard work and awesome videos!
Hey Mr. FortuneCookie45Lc, i've been following you for a while and love your videos educating me how to cast bullets from start to finish. Do you know where to get cheap or free lead?
I know you won’t see this Elvis, since you’ve been MIA on RUclips go so long (I don’t blame you) But because of your videos, I have collected over 4200lbs of lead since 2019 probably. That is in ingot form ready to go. I even bought the mini loaf tins off Amazon that you use. So I just want to say thank you and I miss your videos man
@@elvisammo Thank you for being one of the few people to say to fight rather than to move. The refugee mindset won't help us in the long run. fellow South Carolinian here, and I can't find any tire shops willing to give up wheel weights cause they already have deals with other people that want them (haha, and now I know who!). but I'm lucking to work at a TA Truck Shop where I get first dibs on any weights that come off the tires, and some of these truck tires take up to a full pound to balance them and times that by 10 tires on the tractor and 8 on the trailer. I think the most I've ever pulled off was 5 pounds of lead weights after swapping out all 8 drive tires. only down side is they are around 80% stick on weights. if I ever get desperate enough I might try cracking open one of the massive 60lb batteries those trucks take. we always have around 30 of them on a pallet we sell for scrap.
i did a deal a couple of years back for 3 5gal buckets(total weight was 432lbs) after i sorted and separated everything i wound up with 264lbs in useable clip on weights and 38lbs of stick on weights.
Man that's a lot of work. My back hurts watching you work. Last video you had your Dog helping you . Your brother from jersey buys his bullets made already. Never got into casting . We do have a good bullet caster in toms river called C and J casting . He does a good job ,and I won't blow my back out . Keep up the hard work.
What is your average lead to steel and zinc in your buckets? Here in Ohio I pay $30 per bucket and tend to get about 10 lbs of pure lead from the stick-ons and about another 50 of hard lead alloy out of a 100lb bucket. The rest is zinc and steel.
That is a bit better than here, but then I live fairly close to some big cities and all of the national tire chains use zinc or steel. Our local shop gets those cars in to work on as well, so that increases the steel and zinc in the buckets. I am shooting for a thousand pound reserve then I will slow down and just pick up a bucket as I use it to cast bullets.
Any tips or sources for those of us in "lead free" states? Finding WWs is like pulling hen's teeth here (a 5 gallon bucket full would seem like hitting the mother load). I can actually get pure lead easier. We can shoot lead here, it's just getting harder to aquire it. Thanks
I've bought some linotype, superhard and shot from them, since those aren't so easily found "in the wild". I'm coming from casting slugs and buckshot, so now I need to find how to get high BHN without WWs in the mix. Winter is about to put an end to collecting range scrap here, and I just recently got started doing that.
Great video,I live in Pennsylvania and I have a bunch of tire shops saving wheel weights for me.Im getting as much as I can.I don't have as much as you but I will get their one of these days!
Man i wish it was this simple, i work as a mechanic so getting weights is no problem. The issue is that in Europe lead weights have been banned since around 2005 or something, theyre all zinc now.
Hey Elvis wanted to let you know of a new outlet for great clean range scrap lead. I have 2 Indoor ranges with in 60 miles of me. I get it clean no dirt or paper, steel excetra. they charge me 400.00$ a ton. I went to Lowes and bought 40 buckets and 40 lids to put 50 lbs into each and keep dry and out of the weather. They generate a ton each month Im building a 300 pound melting pot to make ingots. Chat soon I've learned a lot from watching you and Fortunecookie45lc Thacks
Tim pinkham it's not quite as bad as it looks lead is so heavy that you just put a bunch in your melting pot and everything but lead floats to the surface and you just skim it off the top it's quite fun. Just be careful
Hi Elvis, up here I;ve nearly only the access to range scrap. And these are mainly .22 LR . Is that enough hardness to cast .38 specials with ? Thanks and keep up the good work !
You should make video of one of those steel barrels and turn it into a smelter straight away then when molten tap the bottom with small hole and bust out a ton of ingots at once. Plus that video would be awesome
hey rickrn2 you watch a lot of movies dont ya!!!: ) you got me laughing..... one big smelting pot and pour it in the little molds!!!! thanks for making me laugh! : )
That makes my 2 5 gallon buckets look like nothing. nice haul. how do you sort them? piece by piece or temp control and add everything zinc, steel and lead. then remove all the slag and clips. Thank man.
hey Pennsylvania Relic Recovery ....I could do temp control and have done it that way.. Maybe out of habit I separate them by hand first! Yikes ... Yeah, It is faster than you might think after you get the hang of it. You can spot them pretty quick after awhile! Stick on lead, steel, zinc, clip on lead.. Thanks for watching!
Sir you always do a great job but if you want to live a long time you must get 3m p100 lead respirator or you are digging yourself your own grave. Do you get it?
Hey Elvis! Would you be able to do a video on how you process your wheel weights into ingots? I just got my first 5 gallon bucket of wheel weights and need some direction on sorting. Any advise helps! A video would help even more! -Mark-
lead Wheelweights are in the future not available.they are replaced by sink and stainless weights. And also consider this, the dust can contain asbestos from brakes and from the clutch .so clean the weights carefully and clothing. good casting yours peter
No wonder I can't find any lead. You've got it all!
Ive watched thiss video quite a few times this year and look at my 5 gallon bucket thats 1/4 full and shed tears lol
Great video! I appreciate your time and info!!
Thank you very much! Great information, you sound like a "Real Southern Gentleman", I miss people that had a good raising!

WOW!!! I miss those days we used to do that every summer for 15 cents a pound.
You're welcome. Most definetely gonna check out rotometals. Thanks for the info.
Did you just say something about someone hording lead with 3 55 gallon drums in front of you. LOL good job Elvis love your vid's
I've collected lead from tire stores But as you pour I also hear the non lead weight's as they have a higher pitch ting sound .
Do you add anything to the wheel weight lead before casting or do you just smelt clean and cast bulelts

Yep. I've tried for years to even pay for them. Always get a No.

Another source, watch for older house re-roof, I got a good amount of lead from the old lead vent jacks off roofs.
Great haul. Looks like you need to start making ingots.
hey Charles Lawson... yes,yes,yes....I will do that very soon and do a video!!!!!
Very nicely done Elvis Ammo👍🏽 Those buckets get heavy. Scored 3 from one shop. Felt magical to score about 450lbs of WW
Best I've seen yet hell of a haul for sure good stuff

I like this guy 👍🏾
I know you won’t see this Elvis, since you’ve been MIA on RUclips go so long (I don’t blame you)

yes sir Way2go Rule.....real fine ingots.......thanks for watching!
I dug my lead out of the berm at the range. I melted it down into ingots. Still have about 250 pounds of ingots since my last mining effort.
good job Elvis

your welcome jesse ray ... you'll be a Castoholic. too!! ; ) best of luck to ya!

Great video,I live in Pennsylvania and I have a bunch of tire shops saving wheel weights for me.Im getting as much as I can.I don't have as much as you but I will get their one of these days!
Same here ! I'm close to Pittsburgh and don't know of any casters in my area .
do i need to wash all of my range scrap lead before I melt it down and pour it into molds?
No. Any impurities will float to the top of the molten lead. Just scoop it off prior to fluxing.

Gas grill propane tanks yes, 55 gallon drums no but it would still make one heck of a cool video.!
I can't find lead in my area, because, Elvis ammo cleans everybody out before I get there.
Its almost 2021 and I can't find any WW's. Wa state recycles all the lead from the tire shops. Bummer for me.
This is a lot of knowledge do you have a way to donate to the channel ?
Yeah that would be a lot lol have many cast iron cake pans ready to roll and welding gloves hahaha
Might be able to fashion a steel or brass valve of some kind to release / pour the molten lead from bottom pour.
Gotta watch the wheel weights now as they are about 30% steel or zinc. Pain in the tail to sort them all out.
Hey Elvis!
Would you be able to do a video on how you process your wheel weights into ingots? I just got my first 5 gallon bucket of wheel weights and need some direction on sorting. Any advise helps! A video would help even more!
-Mark-
hey Mark McCoy... yes I will im gonna do a massive ingot pile video!!! really soon.... thanks for watching!!!
+elvis ammo I'll be watching! thanks
lead Wheelweights are in the future not available.they are replaced by sink and stainless weights. And also consider this, the dust can contain asbestos from brakes and from the clutch .so clean the weights carefully and clothing.
good casting yours peter
hey peteralexben .... thanks.. that's good advice for me and the viewer! it's very dirty stuff, with who knows what on it. ......
