I get longer, thinner candles, like a dinner candles I guess at garage sales for cheep. I can usually feed them right into the pot to flux my lead. I also save saw dust from the table saw for the save thing. Those little tea candles work good on bigger pots of lead. I just chunk them right into the pot. Best to do this outside as the pot can flame up on you. Thank you for the great video and happy casting.

This is how new casters get in trouble with Zinc in their Lead. I ask that you tell your audience to keep the temperature under the melting point of Zinc.

Run a thermometer and at first don't let it get above 700 degrees until you find them and scoop them out. Lead melts at 621F and Zinc melts at 787F. Trying to hold 621 or even 650F isn't very easy, but making sure the needle doesn't spike over 700F is a lot easier. You don't want any of that crap in your lead alloy as it will contaminate the entire batch.

A drop of water will flash to steam VIOLENTLY as soon as it hits the molten lead causing molten lead to fly everywhere out of the pot and onto you and surrounding objects causing burn and possible fires. Moten lead will stick instantly to bare skin causing burns you can' get away from and you'll learn that lesson very quickly. (and painfully) The more water the more violent the explosion will be. Dealing with molten lead can be done safely but done improperly can be very dangerous. Thank you for watching! It's not that bad actually. Since water is lighter than lead the water will instantly boil and turn to steam so besides some noise I've never had splatter issues with a few drops of water, lead is also heavy so it doesn't splash easily and being a metal it has low thermal capacity so cools quickly on contact. Deep fryers are a different story as oil is lighter than water so when water goes into a deep fryer it sinks under the oil, very quickly turns to gas, and then violently pushes up all the hot oil into the surrounding environment, oil also sticks to your skin much better than lead and holds more heat.

Great vid! But why do you need to let the mold cool down? Seems that a hot mold would help it flow better and not freeze. I haven't done this before so forgive my ignorance. I'm going to cast some sinkers,

Allan Ferguson get the lead hotter. Hotter lead will pour much much better. Don't forget to use it in a well ventilated area and/or wear a respirator. @@scottnra I understand people say it helps the impurities rise to the top, but how? The candle wax is definitely less dense than lead, as are most things. So it's not like the wax is being poured, goes to the bottom and the impurities attach to the candle wax and rise to the top. Also, the lead is higher than the flash point of the wax so the wax is burning immediately. I'm not saying it doesn't work, but it seems like it shouldn't work. Maybe someone can explain the science to me.

Set your mold down and let go of it when you pour. What are ya? I buy scrap lead from recyclers and pour about 200 - 300 pounds of buck and slugs per week. I quit using Lee and Lyman molds and neatly stacking my ingot long ago. Now I use the corn-ear shaped cornbread molds and throw them in buckets. Way more efficient and practical. We ran at a 700% profit margin during the pandemic.

The days of the old FUDD type bullet casters is pretty much over. Beggars can't be choosy these days and you use whatever you can find at the time for a reasonable price making it work. Nowadays with powder coating the actual lead alloy and BHN are less important than they were in the past. You can shoot stuff now after powder coating that would have been unusable in the past because it was too soft or not "chemistry correct" PERFECT Lyman #2, Hardball, 50/50 Linotype etc etc etc. In fact you can use range scrap straight up with powder coating most of the time for a great number of handgun calibers as long as you water quench. Prices are up and through the roof in Fall 2022. Hunt down and buy what you can get when you can get it. The days of the local tire shops GIVING you a 5 gallon bucket of good usable lead wheel weights for free or for trading a case of beer, pack of smokes, box of doughnuts is also VERY OVER! If you are lucky they will SELL them to you for about $1 per pound...if you aren't lucky they will sell them for $2+ per pound or not at all. With that in mind make friends with your local scrapyard. I've personally known my guys for over 20 years and they always tip me off when good stuff comes in. I make a phone call to ask what they have that is lead at that given time. These guys are also gun guys so they know what I am using it for and no "Anti-2A Politics" come into play ever.

Mega Dome 911 in my opinion there is no such thing. Ventilation is key. Plus when it starts turning colors on top, the lead pours a lot better. a good cartridge respirator and opened window in a garage is best if you are going to do a lot of it and can't be outside. Interesting video! However... its not true that a single drop of water hitting the melt will cause a lead explosion. In accuality.. you could pour a whole cup of water on the melt and as long as it stays on top, it will only hiss & steam away. It's when you get moisture beneath the melt that your trouble will begin like when adding cold ingots or wheel weights that have moisture in them to an already melted pot. It still doesn't mean it will explode. It depends on how much water/moisture is introduced.

the only way to completely remove zinc from lead is to heat the lead to 1600 degrees Fahrenheit for an hour ,let it cool and do it again .There is a way to do it with acid .But I don't want to right a book

I hate to tell you this but the 1 and only way to clean lead is to melt it and scoop off the dross nothing ells does anything to it at all and the wheel weights have antimony in them and some are zinc the sad thing is I have seen this all the time on youtube i don't know who or why this ferry tail got started but it is not true at all.

Separate your wheel weights. Zinc, lead (hard/soft), and iron. Reasons: #1 saves time/propane #2 insurers no zinc in the lead #3 you can melt zinc (worth $$$) #4 you can Separate soft/hard alloy lead #5 you can remelt the slag hotter and recover everything. (No waste) #6 If you have a lot of iron with the clips it's not worth much but you can collet it for the scrap yard to get some money.
@ironleaf88 I don't think I'd live ling enough to collect enough iron to pay for the gas to go to the scrap yard lol. Zinc, I'll have to look into. Also if you're adding scrap lead in to molten lead make sure you stuff is dry.

It's not that bad actually. Since water is lighter than lead the water will instantly boil and turn to steam so besides some noise I've never had splatter issues with a few drops of water, lead is also heavy so it doesn't splash easily and being a metal it has low thermal capacity so cools quickly on contact. Deep fryers are a different story as oil is lighter than water so when water goes into a deep fryer it sinks under the oil, very quickly turns to gas, and then violently pushes up all the hot oil into the surrounding environment, oil also sticks to your skin much better than lead and holds more heat.

Ok to use liquid soldering flux instead of paste?
James Manners If you put it in slow with a ladle it should be fine. GO EASY! It will flare up a lot. Be safe and good luck.

Great vid! But why do you need to let the mold cool down? Seems that a hot mold would help it flow better and not freeze. I haven't done this before so forgive my ignorance. I'm going to cast some sinkers,
@fishesfromtupperware it just needs a couple seconds for the lead on big sinkers to solidify. Not much.

You don't have to let it cool. You get better ingots of the mold is hot. I always heat my ingot and sinker mold before pouring.
Lee ignot pot very handy I'm still having trouble pouring lead in my sinker mould I'm heating the sinker mold I'm getting no full sinker
Allan Ferguson get the lead hotter. Hotter lead will pour much much better. Don't forget to use it in a well ventilated area and/or wear a respirator. Experiment with hotter temps on the molten lead, and you'll find it pour a lot better. Hope that helps.

The mold might also be too hot
Can you explain to me how the flux and candle wax helps if it burns off immediately? Also, why does the ingot mold need to cool off between pours?
@jarodmorris4408 I'm not sure I understand the first question. The wax/flux just helps bring impurities to the surface for skimming. I let the ingot mold cool a bit so lead doesn't run out of it. (It takes a couple seconds to harden up)

@@scottnra I understand people say it helps the impurities rise to the top, but how? The candle wax is definitely less dense than lead, as are most things. So it's not like the wax is being poured, goes to the bottom and the impurities attach to the candle wax and rise to the top. Also, the lead is higher than the flash point of the wax so the wax is burning immediately. I'm not saying it doesn't work, but it seems like it shouldn't work. Maybe someone can explain the science to me.

Set your mold down and let go of it when you pour. What are ya? I buy scrap lead from recyclers and pour about 200 - 300 pounds of buck and slugs per week. I quit using Lee and Lyman molds and neatly stacking my ingot long ago. Now I use the corn-ear shaped cornbread molds and throw them in buckets. Way more efficient and practical. We ran at a 700% profit margin during the pandemic.

Just almost impossible to find lead wheel weights where I live anymore. I think powder coated bullets are a joke if you do it.🤣
@gvet47 never shot powder coated bullets. I find buying bullets in bulk makes the most sense for me right now anyway.

The days of the old FUDD type bullet casters is pretty much over. Beggars can't be choosy these days and you use whatever you can find at the time for a reasonable price making it work. Nowadays with powder coating the actual lead alloy and BHN are less important than they were in the past. You can shoot stuff now after powder coating that would have been unusable in the past because it was too soft or not "chemistry correct" PERFECT Lyman #2, Hardball, 50/50 Linotype etc etc etc. In fact you can use range scrap straight up with powder coating most of the time for a great number of handgun calibers as long as you water quench. Prices are up and through the roof in Fall 2022. Hunt down and buy what you can get when you can get it. The days of the local tire shops GIVING you a 5 gallon bucket of good usable lead wheel weights for free or for trading a case of beer, pack of smokes, box of doughnuts is also VERY OVER! If you are lucky they will SELL them to you for about $1 per pound...if you aren't lucky they will sell them for $2+ per pound or not at all. With that in mind make friends with your local scrapyard. I've personally known my guys for over 20 years and they always tip me off when good stuff comes in. I make a phone call to ask what they have that is lead at that given time. These guys are also gun guys so they know what I am using it for and no "Anti-2A Politics" come into play ever.

Mega Dome 911 in my opinion there is no such thing. Ventilation is key. Plus when it starts turning colors on top, the lead pours a lot better. a good cartridge respirator and opened window in a garage is best if you are going to do a lot of it and can't be outside.

@xora7490 They clean up just fine. any of the other matter on them just burns off. Yeah, don't breath that. THat's what respirators are for and why you should always work with lead outside. :-)

My buddy showed me candle wax to clean it is that as good as flux
Edgar Melton I think so. Pretty much anything that draws the impurities to the top. Even Sawdust can be used.

why do you let the ingot mold cool between pourings? I have found that a how mold works best and gives a better ingot.
@timstroud2112 Mainly for handling purposes and enough for the hot lead to turn solid again. I'm not having any trouble with the mold pouring

However... its not true that a single drop of water hitting the melt will cause a lead explosion. In accuality.. you could pour a whole cup of water on the melt and as long as it stays on top, it will only hiss & steam away. It's when you get moisture beneath the melt that your trouble will begin like when adding cold ingots or wheel weights that have moisture in them to an already melted pot. It still doesn't mean it will explode. It depends on how much water/moisture is introduced.
shadowcastre NOT TRUE, and that's the kind of thing that will get someone really hurt who tries it in hot molten lead.

the only way to completely remove zinc from lead is to heat the lead to 1600 degrees Fahrenheit for an hour ,let it cool and do it again .There is a way to do it with acid .But I don't want to right a book

I hate to tell you this but the 1 and only way to clean lead is to melt it and scoop off the dross nothing ells does anything to it at all and the wheel weights have antimony in them and some are zinc the sad thing is I have seen this all the time on youtube i don't know who or why this ferry tail got started but it is not true at all.
dan van der torre we can agree to dissagree. It makes a visible difference in the finished ingots. You are right about the other metal and Zinc Wheel Weights won't melt at normal lead temps.

Separate your wheel weights. Zinc, lead (hard/soft), and iron.
Reasons:
#1 saves time/propane
#2 insurers no zinc in the lead
#3 you can melt zinc (worth $$$)
#4 you can Separate soft/hard alloy lead
#5 you can remelt the slag hotter and recover everything. (No waste)
#6 If you have a lot of iron with the clips it's not worth much but you can collet it for the scrap yard to get some money.
@ironleaf88 I don't think I'd live ling enough to collect enough iron to pay for the gas to go to the scrap yard lol. Zinc, I'll have to look into. I still think letting the molten lead separate zinc from lead is faster though adding it a handful at at time...
