What, so you don't know what it was? I mean, it LOOKED like a few sticks of dynamite, but do you know for sure? Call me a maniacal pyro, but I would've kept looking through it.

  • @timm2020

    Yeah.
Here is a great lesson learned here.
I have heard of people finding old caches of dynamite in a box, when trying to open it they got blown to hell.
You are very lucky you did not a spark from that screw driver.
It's also a wonder it did not go off when you drop it.
    This Shit is very dangerous.
Next time handle with care, and do not bring it into your house.

    • @Bbfishman
      @Bbfishman 10 лет назад +5

the odds of creating a spark capable of igniting anything inside, with that screwdriver while opening the suitcase is extremely low. Now if you used a grinder or a saw i would believe you, but simply using a screwdriver and his hands alone isnt going to blow himself up.

You must not know much about Dynamite.
When dynamite gets old it becomes like jelly.
It does not take very much to set it off.
You can just hit it lightly and it will go off.
Look it up and see for yourself.

timm2020 however they said the case smelled like mold and everything was stiff and hard.. This indicates water has been soaking into that case over the years. the odds that would even go off is slim to none

Rustic Shine thats been my argument for every comment response people have been giving me claiming that they're experts on TNT and that it could have blown up at any second at a totally random point....too bad it needs some sort of impact, shock or some sort of event to set it off, not just a random tick of a clock......if it was going to blow up, it would have blown up by the time he got it on his fucking kitchen table

I found a case of old dynamite in a old mining shack in the Sierra Nevadas when I was about 10. I thought the sticks were no good since they had these weird bubbles in spots that looked like donute glazing. I was walking down a old mountain rd carrying several in my shirt when my uncle finally found me . He almost had a stroke realizing I had a t-shirt filled with Nitro Blistered sticks of 80 + year old dynamite. He gently set it down and we backed away in his pickup . The sheriffs dept was notified and a week later the t shirt full of dynamite was still sitting in the same place

it was a smart idea calling the bomb squad because the dynamite is 25 - 30 years old it has now since become unstable and could of gone off with the smallest spark. and instantly killed this family. dynamite and any explosive material is dangerous and if you find something like this call 911 , evacuate the neighborhood and get the hell away from there (at least 500 ft)

What you did was right. As dynamite ages it sweats a chemical called nitroglycerin. Nitroglycerin is an extremely reactive compound that can combust due to slight changes in humidity, temperature, and pressure. Just the temperature change from that packaging to your home could have triggered a fatal explosion. Glad your alive and good job handling it. ^_^

He is lucky that the nitroglycerin leaching out of that dynamite didn't blow up in his hand or as he pryed on the lid. as it ages it becomes VERY unstable. as it sweats it becomes shock sensative. my cousin and I found 2 sticks in an old mine shaft. we sat it at the base of an oak tree and shot it with a bb gun. even from 50 or so feet away behind a tractor we both recieved ruptured eaf drums and required stitches. ear drums from the massive kaboom stitches from the tree hitting us.
I should add. it took several shots to hit the explosives.

Well ,she drop it on the floor. There was a visible puff of smoke and shell become warm on touch. So he just place it into shopping bag and drove to near local police station. Police officers left via windows immediately.

Dynamite is made of nitroglycerine soaked into some absorbent material with a little sodium carbonate. When stored for a long time it's supposed to be turned over every now and again because the it becomes 'wet' as the nitro seeps out.
If the nitro pools anywhere, a small shock could set it off so wet dynamite is extremely dangerous. The saving grace with this lot was the fact that it was well wrapped in newsprint, stabalising the seeping nitroglycerine.
He did the right thing calling the cops.

A little advice from someone who actually has experience with explosives.
Current explosives are relatively safe to handle but older ones can become very unstable. Dynamite that is very old is often composed of nitroglycerin and diatomaceous earth, or worse, sawdust. If the cases are not turned regularly, the nitroglycerin will seep out. Dynamite is a high explosive, and therefore shock, not heat, sensitive. The nitroglycerin is even more sensitive to shock. However, heat is a factor, in the form of ambient temperature. The cooler the temperature, the less sensitive, the higher the temp, more sensitive. The smell and "coating" you mentioned was almost certainly raw nitro, and it ( the paper) could very well have saved your life as it acted as an absorbent (sawdust is another form of cellulose).
You got lucky. A few sheets less of the paper wrapping, a few degrees hotter ambient temp, and you might not have needed to call the bomb squad. Your neighbors would have called them to inspect the hole where your house used to be.
    You did the right thing.

My point is that if any sort of combustion was going to take place, it would have happened at any point from when he originally pulled it out from under running water for the past 10-15 years, to the point he was physically handling the dynamite. If it didnt blow up by then, all he had to do was dispose of it without making a big fuss about it where he literally had the fucking bomb squad and swat team show up to his trailer park like they had a real bomb threat situation on their hands. So why don't YOU think twice before you leave a comment like that.

For all of you big shots commenting on here dissing the guy for opening the case in his house, the cussing at the kids, or whatever else you have to complain about to make yourself look macho...let me say this:
First of all, the guy opened the case in his house because he wasn't expecting there to be explosives in it. I bet if you were in his shoes you wouldn't had either. They yelled at the kids because they were being GOOD PARENTS! They saw what was in the case and recognized the threat and freaked out. They wanted to get it away from their kids and out of the house asap. And yes...people cuss. Get over it.
On top of that...for all of the explosive "experts" making rude comments on here...please remember that not everyone is trained in explosives and they don't know any better. They were doing what they thought was right so give them a break.
And lastly, to all the people on here making rude comments that call themselves "treasure hunters"...you are the kind of people that gives the hobby a bad name, and why our hobby is being shunned by local governments and archaeologists. You're a disgrace to our wonderful hobby. But that's ok, too, because karma is a bitch!
To Squirmdog1, cool find, dude! When I worked as a deckhand on riverboats I was always keeping a keen eye out for my briefcase full of money. I never found it, of course. lol Sorry it was what it was. Perhaps next time, tho! :) And I'm sorry you have to get a bunch of immature and disrespectful idiots on here trying to show their ass. Unfortunately, they seem to be growing in population; which doesn't say a lot for THEIR parents. >:( Just ignore them.
    But until next time...happy hunting!

Anything could have been in those other packets that weren't shaped like dynamite....

God was with you and your family that day. back in the 70's I bought a old dodge p/u and brought it home and started cleaning out the bed it was full of junk and it had a whole box of dynamite they was all broke up rotted. but also we was stupid back them we threw it in our old pound and went on our way.

people commenting saying he didnt finish looking obviously dont know how unstable dynamite is even after sitting for decades it just makes it more unstable.

ok, so to those saying abuse -- its not abuse to yell at your kid to stay away. Maybe cussing so much in front of him is a bad idea (it is), but getting him away was not abuse people

I thought this was a great find you did the world a favor and you really could have gotten hurt without realizing it to be sure. As for the comments about being mean to the little boy I didnt see them being mean at all they were starting to stress and the kid wouldn't mind. I felt the parents did a great job of getting him out from under their feet and then when they realized they had a very serious and dangerous situation they did the correct and proper thing they contacted the authorities and let them take over. Other folks may have removed it back to where it was found and left it for the next person to find which could have been a kid and it could have turned out way differently! Good Job folks! I for one felt you handled it very well!! Next time open it outside lol!!

There is a certain point (like when it's been sitting in water for 30 years) that dynamite will not explode the only thing you should have been worried about was the mould that was growing all over it and by the way dynamite is not really that dangerous it's only really dangerous when it's being confined like when they use it for mining other wise it's about as dangerous as the same amount of fireworks!

Dynamite gets really dangerous when it gets old. It sweats nitroglycerin.
Shake it too hard and it'll blow up.

He's a father. That's what we do. Its called tough love. It Does not make him a bad parent to yell at his kid. A child without Rules and authority grow up to be self centered brats with a sense of entitlement. Hes a good father for teaching boundaries.

You must feel very lucky it didn't explode when you dropped it on the way to your truck. When it sweats nitroglycerin it becomes very unstable.

now if that dynamite had been in a humid zone then we would of had a seriously short and tragic video, because old dynamite sweats the nitro glycerine out making it completely unstable, one jolt and BOOOM
