I remember watching this episode when it came out (many moons ago). Such a shame that we can't find/watch this show on any streaming service (none that I know of), it was fantastic!
This was filmed in 1991/92 for a jazz show on BET hosted by Ramsey Lewis. According to the producer, the upturned chairs were supposed to simulate the vibe of us having a band rehearsal. Instead, it looks like we were playing to an empty club. Nice. On the keys is Darrell Grant, a wonderful pianist and educator who was in my band at the time. The bassist and drummer, unfortunately I only met moments before the taping. We had a very brief rehearsal, and we hit. I'd say that they all came through.
I will said Greg Osby took the Smooth Jazz to another level here, this is maybe one if not the best solo I ever heard on any Smooth Jazz player, thank you so much for this Master Class!!!
He is definitely playing some advanced harmonies here. It all makes sense though. I've transcribed this one and other solos of Osby. Here he's playing on a Selmer Mark VII alto. and Vandoren A75 mouthpiece that he used back in the 90's.
i'd love to see what you've got for a transcription of this tune, it's such a cool solo. i did one out of his tune gutterman but it's handwrite... other wise i've got a kenny garret solo i could swap?
startrevolution? Your comment is ANTI-revolutionary. Dexter Gordon isn't the composer of this tune and Osby is as entitled as anybody to interpret it in any way he chooses. It's the same tune, just done with a groove. DAMN, lighten up!
Cold soup? That's completely disrespectful. Why don't you post a link with a sample of YOU playing so we can see how it should be done. Show us the way.
Ok. Interesting. They didnt even give him an audience. Greg is talking shit too! LOL The piano player (Darryl Grant) played a much better, more coherent solo. I think this is in the 80's..this is ok...
Fell in love with the Osby sound since first listen... talking decades. From thoguht to execution. And he never disappoints.
Magical -- keeps drawing back to these beautiful sounds and groove!

This video made you one of my idols, Gregorio. Cheers.
Greg is a badass.

Osby is on a whole other level. At times, in the solo, it seems like there is a bi-tonal thing going on. I love it.
They're cooking and I'm enjoying. Thanks. 😊
Woo. I love this. I'd like to hear them take it at a slower tempo also.
Great post. Love Darrell Grant. Appreciate your music Greg, takes you on a journey.
Love the groove.
beautifull sound!
Osby is superlative, turns a simple standard into a piece of art!
Just Love this
