These two episodes imo are really where this series starts becoming its own thing and steps closer into the greatness. The first four episodes are well done and entertaining. But it’s also kinda Goodfellas-lite and a bit all over the place. These two eps are where the show begins to calm down, focus a bit more on theme and dialogue, and do some great character work. “College” remains a top 10 episode of the show.
Agreed..It just get's progressively better over time, and draws you in deep..Just a great show...I recently watched a tribute to James Gandolfini, by his co-stars, and how he was so loved by everyone involved in the show..Total opposite of the cold-blooded character he depicts throughout the series..Such a loss...I wonder if our two hosts here realize that the Silvio Dante character is played by Steven Van Zandt. Long time guitarist in Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band (and no that's not his real hair. It's a wig)..When they approached him for the part he thought they were crazy. They convinced him, and he said he was very uncomfortable on the first day, with all these accomplished actors, but Gandolfini took him under his wing, and made him feel a part of the team, and his character became one of the most beloved on the show...His real life wife plays his wife in the show, as well.
I disagree. I always hear people saying that season 1 starts off too goodfellas-esque and doesn't find its footing until midway thru the season. But other than the pilot, it already knew what it was from episode 2. The focus on the family drama issues with Tony's mother and how it connects to the women in his life (Carm, Meadow, Dr Melfi) all were being set up from episode 2. The Sopranos shines as a family drama and character study masked as a typical mob show and this is really emphasised from episode 2 with the direction the show is taking.
@@Filimaua13 Not saying the opening episodes are poor. However, outside of the Tony-Livia dynamic, the relationships are not yet that interesting. And there’s a lot of plot and world fleshing out in the early episodes that is typical for tv shows. The episodes are still solid, particularly “Meadowlands” and “46 Long”. While I am well aware that The Sopranos is not a conventional mob story and that it uses the mob as a framework for a story that has more to do with family, mental health, morality, masculinity than mob antics. I just find these two episodes to have more finesse and focus the episodes before them. They solidify the show’s quality, are a bit more daring and unique, and reflect more of what style and tone the series will reflect more than the previous installments.
Yeah, the first episodes were really conventional 90s TV. The show will develope its style by late 2 season. Writers like Terence Winter will become part of the writing team.
@@georgekech4903 I wasn’t talking about the first two seasons. I was talking about the first few episodes. I also prefer the first 2 seasons over seasons 3 and 4, though those are still really good.
For the year it aired, there was a lot to talk about in episode 5: His cheating was mentioned, the kill scene was detailed and sadistic, the plot made extra sure that there was no element of self-defense... The audience at the time was thinking "Boy, the villain of the show is sure getting a lot of screen time..." This episode made Dexter, Walter White, etc possible.
I love the Sopranos so much that I am enjoying just seeing these great moments in all the episodes again. This is one of those series where you feel like re-watching everything every few years.
The ABSOLUTE GOAT for playing with Fire so boldly. I feared for his life and cheered him on simultaneously. And then the Mrs. riposte. Quality entertainment.
The script to this episode caused David Chase a lot of trouble with HBO. It was unthinkable at the time to have a main character murder someone in cold blood. But it was the best choice ever and gave birth to every anithero since. Walter White etc.
Hesh is a loan shark, also known as a shylock. Hes been operating without having to kick up to the boss. Junior wants him to start. Hes asking for 2% of his income plus a lump sum of what he shoukd have been paying .
Back in the 60s guys like Hesh would bankroll Black Motown style singers. Help them get in the studio, record and produce records as well as use their mob connections to make sure they got radio play. But if their records became a hit they wound up paying back way way more money to these “Heshes” than. they owed or was reasonable. That’s what Tony was talking about.
@Lauren Lewis i don’t think you would want to be in trouble with him lol, remember when he beat the shit out of a guy just because the way he looked at him?
Most of the mobster characters on this show are well cast, but man, the way Johnny Sack says "salut" when they promote Junior to boss it's like he's a real mobster right there.
That picture in the background at 3:16 my mom had on our wall at home when I was growing up. When I started watching this show like a year ago I remember seeing it and flipping out haha because when my mom died that was one of the few things i kept
My favorite crew member is definitely Pauly 'Walnuts'. His character is developed more in the next few seasons. He is generally not very smart or worldly, but he thinks he is. He delivers some of the funniest lines in this show.
So glad to see the younger generation discovering this show. I rewatched it myself during lockdown after not having watched since the original finale aired. It still holds up as a TV benchmark. Edie Falco and James Gandolfini are such amazing actors
The movie that Carm and Father Phil are watching is Remains of the Day and a very good movie. I highly recommend it, both Hopkins and Thompson are great in it. It was nominated for 8 academy awards including best picture, actor, actress, and screenplay!
"College" is widely considered one of the most influential and greatest episodes in television history. This was the first time a main antagonist has committed cold blooded murder and was expected to remain the emotional focus of the show. This episode paved the way for pretty much every TV show since. Especially crime dramas.
A good observation for Pax Soprana ending scene: "This scene gets me everytime. We know Tony is the real boss but they make the FBI believe that Junior is the boss and Tony is just a capo. The way the two look at each other says something" The Sopranos is for a reason the greatest show ever created
"Shylock" was a character in Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice", who was a moneylender. "Shylock" or "Shy" is now slang for a loan shark. Hesh's "other" business, aside from his recording company, is bookmaking/sports betting and loan sharking. "2 points monthly on his Shy" means pay Junior 2% of his monthly loan sharking income.
When Head said Junior is taxing his "Shy" means Shylock. I believe it's Yiddish/German Hebrew which is for a Loan sharking business, when they say 2 points it's interest. Another term is Vig for Interest.
Pax Soprana is a reference to Pax Romana, the long period of peace in the Roman Empire. from Augustus Caesar's reign in 27 B.C. to Marcus Aurelius' in 180 A.D. Livia Soprano, curiously, shares the same name as Emperor Augustus' wife and trusted advisor, Livia.
That was the Paterson Falls in Paterson NJ that the guy got tossed off. You would not want to be in that river and not already be dead. I grew up in that town and know the smell of that river well.

The creator of The Sopranos, David Chase, was inspired by the style of Goodfellas. He even originally wanted Lorraine Bracco as Tony's wife. Highly recommend if y'all haven't seen it yet! Loving the reaction to my favorite TV drama!!
This has probably already been explained by now 😅 but @ 22:05 Hesh says “ 500 Large, plus 2 points monthly on my shy” so he was being taxed $500K by junior plus 2 percent a month on all his loansharking business
Oh I tell ya, as I started watching this video and saw the Mrs. stern facial expression while Tony gets out of his car at the end of the into. As I continue to watch this show for myself, I will now think of the Mrs. as a gangster...as well as a cylon (as both of you work your way through BSG).

Tony didn't change the starter on Dr. Melfi's car, he had Sal "Big Pussy" Bonpensario fix her car. Sal is the same one that Tony sent to find Anthony Jr.'s teacher's stolen car.
Capo is simply short for or Italian? for captain. In the mob the Captains each are leaders of a “crew” which is a collection of soldiers and associates. Each soldier must obey his captain and earn money a percentage of which is kicked up to his Captain. Each Captain must obey the boss and kick a percentage of all their earnings up to him. I'm glad y'all are watching and enjoying this series. Personally I think it's one of the best if not the best of American TV. Sacrilege statement incoming: I vastly prefer The Sopranos to Breaking Bad, and Tony Soprano is vastly more charismatic than Walter White.

College is easily a top 10, maybe top 5 episode of the series. It’s the episode that really put eyes on the show and catapulted it into the start of what we all know the show to be today.
BENSONHURST BROOKLYN Shoutout! 🇮🇹🇺🇸

Best show in tv history.
I'm glad y'all are watching and enjoying this series. Personally I think it's one of the best if not the best of American TV. Sacrilege statement incoming: I vastly prefer The Sopranos to Breaking Bad, and Tony Soprano is vastly more charismatic than Walter White.
No sacrilege there. I agree completely, Sopranos over Breaking Bad all day long.👍
Why sacrilege, many people agree
@@kristinalfc5846 many also don't.
2 or my favorite characters come in later, but one made a apperance in episode 6. He was in the background with no lines. I won't spoil the names or who they are
Drink'n ain't a sin! As long as you don't drink in church I reckon.
23:40 hahah high-five 😂
I think when you sing along to the opening song it's safe to say that you're hooked!
The sacramental kit is carried by most priests. That and a missal is all he would need to celebrate mass
*_The Sopranos_* is the best T.V. Show ever made. _EVER._
I always go back and forth with either The Wire or The Sopranos they’re both masterpieces
You got that right!👍
13:55 lmaooo that would be hilarious 🤣💦
