When I was in college in the 70's, sitting back in a theater seat in a sparse, dark movie theater watching this whole film on the big screen during one of those "midnight shows" they used to do after the regular movie schedules were finished for the day...was truly a trip! 😃

I've always felt that this could be the soundtrack to the creation of the universe. And when they drop that groove! Echoes is truly a religious experience. Pink Floyd - stealing souls since 1967!

What always amazes me is that it's just four guys creating this incredible soundscape, but when four incredible guys work so well together, as if they are one, this is the result.

You do realize Pink Floyd is not JUST a band, they are a way of life, RIGHT? There is no true peak above the rest when you realize that the width and breadth of Pink Floyd's existence is akin to the spine of the world (the Rocky Mountains never truly dissappear before heaving their way towards the heavens once again and being called the Ande's). Cringe all you like at the metaphor, but the simple nugget of truth I have culled from all the works of Pink Floyd is to never label anything the "best" as that leads to stagnation and social rancor over complete nonsense...

So glad you did this. As a kid I found Meddle in my older brothers "don't you dare touch" vinyl collection, I'd lie on the floor with headphones before anyone else got home and this was the jump from the Beatles to something that just felt more "grown up"!... A song that wasn't about a girl😂
And to think they did this before Dark Side of the Moon..... just awesome stuff.
BTW You might recognise a riff in Part 2 from the West End Show - Phantom of the Opera. Allegedly ALW pinched it! but when asked why PF didn't take him to court, apparently Roger Waters said "life's too short!"
    What a shame that sentiment didn't last🤔

I appreciate your attempt to give a specific meaning to this performance (song, if you like). Remember this is "Echoes" which means sounds & noises coming from the past and reminiscent of the ancient times. That's why it's done in Pompeii, a city in Italy that was destroyed by a volcano. The absence of spectators with the presence of those statues gives a better meaning to the title "Echoes". Kudos for all members of the group. Fantastic job: David Guilmour, Roger Waters, Nick Mason & Richard Wright.

WE are one family.DNA the same but arranged differently..That is ok.. We are all human..
    We are on one planet.We really need to understand that at every level Every part of this planet is interconnected;
    beautifully intertwined;ecologically connected and intertwined...
Really-That is so much a thing;a concept;a beautiful tapestry to be a part of..
The tapestry is 5 dimentiomal...The experience is so transcendentally individualistic..and yet at the same time just simply ,...appreciating one another...
    this is so gently important..

I agree with all you said, however, I also believe that if we humans do our best to not litter/pollute, etc. I know that the Earth is capable of dealing with Humanity, quite easily. Also, the Earth is nowhere near, to being Over Populated, just as I know that "Climate Change" is not the kind of emergency that these liars would have us believe, either. Earth has already dealt with things much more destructive than the Human Race. If anything, we might be like Fleas to the Earth and probably much, much less of a problem, actually. We Live on a dynamic Planet which is changing all of the time, like it or not. So continue to do your best, but also stop worrying about all of this made up crap, meant to keep you scared. Later Kerry Dwyer. Remain Well & reasonably Happy too. Keep Smiling... Cheers...

That is keyboardist Rick Wright and Dave Gilmour singing - Rick does a lot of harmonies in Floyd's catalogue - he is featured as lead on the chorus of "Time" and gets good play on "Us and Them" but has a high register no one else did in he band and he is the secret key to some of their best vocal sounds. Echoes is a right of passage for any Pink Floyd journey - it came off "Meddle" the fantastic 1971 album that came before Dark Side and the whole album shows they were ready to ramp up to a level of greatness over 4 albums that makes them the revered masters they are.

    • @snakeinthegrass7443

Thanks for the info on Rick. I didn't know he sang any lead. So sad they cant get along and continue to create the magic of the 70s. Personalities 🤜💥🤛 It happens in the very best of bands. TOO much talent in one space. But in every case, nobody's music is better after a split. Ozzy's had a great career with amazing music but better than what Sabbath could've been? Idk
I love Floyd and have since my early teens when The Wall was playing at midnight in the theater. I dont even know how many times I went 😄😄 But...that was the beginning of my journey back in time to discover the best music ever put to tape. Ahhh, think I might just go fire up Animals and REALLY annoy my dog haha. Poor guy doesn't know what's going on. 🐖🐕🐷🐖🐽🐑🐖 Lol

Echoes has been my favorite PF song for 50 years. For me it clearly is a mix of their past, present and future direction at that time just before the Dark Side of the Moon mega hit. After Echoes they would leave behind this long epic song format. You should also review the full Echoes version on Meddle. Also see the final Echoes performance with Richard Wright it is really great. RIP Richard. That was also the last time PF played Echoes.

I don't think any other band has come close to this. It has so many elements to it and even many heavy metal bands would be envious of the second part. It was in the middle of an ancient amphitheatre. The music could also have something to do with a volcanic eruption. They recorded the natural echoes to their music.

Perhaps they are there in Pompeii to engineering anew where the land was devastated
and leveled by a tremendous volcano. They certainly have been my fave band ever since my early teens early 70's. I still deal the same today about this band, now David Gilmour, and
Nick Mason, and late, great Richard Wright. I have seen them every time they played in Canada, at least 5-6 times. They are on another plane for me.

Need to see the complete song at " Gdansk" 2006 with Rick Wright ( keyboard) & Dave on guitar , the only 2 from the Floyd. Which Dave said it will never be played again with the passing of Rick later on. If you enjoy Dave guitar I recommend some of his solo work " in any tongue" "the Blue" " Take a Breath". BY FAR the best non band video of Floyd is Pink Floyd " on the turning away " ( 1989-07-15) FM by thinkfloyd 61. 7 million views and is VERY relevant today as when written. Their music is ever lasting.

You should take time on your own if not react to it and check out the version of Echoes they did in 2006 live in Gdansk!! Probably the best live version of that song I've seen or heard and it's the very last time it was performed by David Gilmour and Rick Wright being that he passed on two years later! It's the last time David Gilmour said he would perform it because of his friend Rick being half the vocals and now gone!!
Additionally you said it sounds like they're building something... they originally called this song 26 pieces of nothing because they kept coming up with different parts of the song and finally put it together as one piece of music! What actually started the song was that first sonar ping that Rick Wright came up with. To me it's up there with Mozart's Requiem or Beethoven's pastoral as a piece of music and I think it will probably last forever! This songs 50 years old this year!!

Mt Vesuvius is looming. Unbeknownst to the bustling towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Both horrifically wiped out completely. No one knew what was happening. It started out with earthquake, then ash spewing, pumice rained down by the tons, then rocks, and hot embers, and gases, roofs caved in from the ash, the burning sulphuric gases, then the coupe de grace...the pyrocastic flow with heat 1200 degrees. A tidal wave of hell of no escape

03:10 It most definitely represents (celebrates) the birth of the classic '70s Pink Floyd sound, David Gilmour finally settling into his role as a major creative force in the band he'd finally established with "Meddle," after a few dicey "hiccup" albums. Director Adrian Maben, who'd wanted to work with the Floyd previously, thought of the idea for this document after searching for his passport he'd actually dropped in the amphitheatre on holiday, and thus, one of the best "non-concert" film ideas ever came to fruition. It's a masterpiece, timing-wise, and production-wise.
Next, the band went onto Dark Side of the Moon . . .

An incredible song and performance, a revelation to those who've never seen or heard it. I remember my first time in the old Original 99cent Roxy, an underground cinema in Toronto in the early mid-70s. unforgettably powerful. Ric Wright and David Gilmour's harmonies sound amazing, as of course does the whole band. Yes, Harri, like the birth of something: primal, nearly god-like. O

I's kinda BS that Rick Wright didn't really sing on anything beyond Dark Side of the Moon. He and Gilmour locked up nicely.

There is not a single Pink Floyd song where the drummer worked like that

This video always weirded me out, couldn't decide if it was sacrilege playing to the dead or a tribute to them. Was that stadium really empty besides the band and crew? All that echo goes back through time, it's freaky and the camera panning is way too calm. It's an iconic film.

I did read some local schoolkids were their during filming over the few days they were filming Live at Pompeii.

For the best analysis of the meaning behind Echoes, I suggest watching this video. It makes an already awesome piece of music even better. ruclips.net/video/U8LCqosoYsU/видео.html

To think they were doing this when most people were still doing the twist or singing to the birdie song

If you want to really hear Pink Floyd. Stay away from live videos and just do studio work. Their sounds cannot be completely reproduced outside the studio.

It depends on the era really. After Dark Side their studio albums were generally the best representation of their work. Before that their live performances were where they shone best. When you compare the studio recording of, say, a Saucerful of Secrets to live performances of that song, it's night and day.

Huge Pink Floyd fan here but I find this song to be tough to get through now that I am clean and sober.
Cut out about 10 minutes of the hippie dippie crap in the middle and I'd be 100% on board.

The vocals carry me through either way man. Happy to hear you’ve found your sober self ✌️

To be fair I get a little anxious on any song, might just be my generation but I go to the next song before it’s over when it’s a slow fade out ending :/ lol
