I think it's going about as expected and I like your progress thus far. You cobbled together the parts to put this 'junk' canoe together and your workin out the kinks, figuring out what needs to be changed and redesigned, all part of the process. Personally I love it just the way it is, I didn't expect you to get much more speed than what you got, considering the size of the motor and the prop I think it's right where it should be. Let me say how much I'm enjoying your channel. Very entertaining , no drama , no BS, just stimulating the grey matter and giving me ideas on ways I can stimulate my own creativity, love it.

May I suggest you ditch the tiller and attach a bellcrank to the rudder post. Use lines leading forward to steer. The canoe will sail better if you can balance it, fore-and-aft. Move your seat amidship. The steering lines described above and a remote throttle and pull-start rope will help.

One of the problems with using weed eater power is that the centrifugal clutch is unable to handle heavier loads.. it just slips and makes heat until it fails.. The small 2-strokes don’t have torque so the flywheel weight has to be matched to the load cycle.. since a weed eater spins freely at high speed, it doesn’t need much flywheel at all.. but a prop in water is high drag, all the time.

Looks like you were at brookfield lake in MO. Seeing some of the comments, I agree on the smaller prop idea. Still tweeking the carb and using new gas could not make it worse. Still, it has been fun to watch!

I am almost 74 so I may try something like this or a small 5hp motor. I will have to build a motor mount but should be easy. Thanks for the video. Oh and I have to lose 50 lbs...docs orders!

Oh my, when you are riding in a canoe like that there is a seat for a single rider, that’s the one at the other end of your canoe and of course the faulty weight distribution. If there were two people on board then you are at the correct end. Interesting project. I see a lot of people third world countries with skinny boats and they sit forward and have long propeller shafts, sometimes going quite a ways behind the boat. Anyway this is an inspirational video and looked like you had a lot of fun doing it and did well at keeping the cost down. All the best to ‘ya.

Keep in mind that once you put an engine on a boat, no matter how small, you have to register it with your state and have to abide by ALL USCG Regulations in regards to motorized craft, Safety Equipment and Registration Number on the bow. I realize this was a fun little project but Fish & Game can issue a citation if you are discovered operating the craft on the water. Sorry to rain on your parade just a friendly heads up. In my opinion: If you slow down the RPMs and preferably increase the torque, your velocity should improve even without changing the prop. Presently I suspect the RPMs are too fast to create any real thrust. Given the size of the prop and weedeater, I suspect improvement would still be modest. You may be able to test my theory, if you haven't already by running full bore open then attempt to slow and see if velocity improves. If not, maybe try a few different props. Try one with a greater pitch if available or slightly larger. These would be my thoughts. Good luck.
